In this review, suitably attired, we go for a drive out in the Surrey countryside to test a wonderful 2019 MG ZS 1.0 TGI Exclusive Automatic and see how practical it is, what it is like to drive and what it is like to own. Be prepared for more in-jokes for fans of 1970s ITC television shows (as usual), references to Peter Serafinowicz's seminal spoof science series Look Around You, references to Dynamic Red paintwork, lots of affection for 1.0 litre three cylinder turbocharged engines, the unexpected appearance of a furiousdriving style tea shelf, the return of the "official" secret mission documents, some illegal maneouvres (not captured on camera, thankfully), artico leather, irritating warning reminders, far too much excitement about, well, everything and references to electric cars... Nothing untoward, then!

I love the sound of the nice compliant ride that you describe Sir, that is my preference in any vehicle. The 1.0 litre Turbo engine does sound quiet and has excellent economy for a car of this size. Very roomy, very comfortable, very good looking inside and out. However, it would seem that the old tech 1.5 engine accelerates more quickly.

Yes, this engine is still available, and is even better with a manual gearbox. The post-facelift ones handle very slightly better from what I can see. That 1.5 may be a bit faster, but it's a very loud and frustrating engine with very little torque.

Excellent review Joseph, nice balance of information, opinion and entertainment as always. Although I can't say I'm really a fan of SUVs, I can understand their appeal and the ZS looks excellent value for money in this sector. And importantly, it passes the 'Secret Mission Documents' glove box test. :) The tri-coat 'Dynamic Red' paint looks lovely, and at £695 extra, I'd definitely go for that. (I'd stay away from the default Solid White for reasons discussed elsewhere.) The 3 star safety rating may deter some potential buyers and this is something MG need to improve on. (As you say, they have added additional safety features to the electric version so they are aware.) Anyway, back to my Mark Caine novel....

It is a really good car, and will suit the needs of many. Of course, it isn't perfect, but I did very much enjoy my week with it. It isn't quite Jason King's style, but then again, he can always afford something a bit better than you or I, can't he?

Just back from a few weeks in Mauritius and can advise that the ZS is selling well over there. Probably saw more in that short time than I've seen in total on the road back home. Top version (automatic only, with sunroof) is priced at Rs 995,000 which is around ₤22,000.

@@stanleyleopard6799, they seem to becoming more common around here as well! Funny how popular they are in Mauritius too. The specification is quite different to the petrol Exclusive over here if it has the sunroof! Mind you, we are paying less for the privilege, aren't we?

Now dont get me wrong, it seems like a decent great value for money car, but you can clearly see it was built on a budget, And this is a very crowded sector, even more crowded now with the Xceed. Ps no air con? thats unforgivable!

No air con is only on the entry model , not this one

Yes, as Fostie says, only the £12,500 base model Explore has no air conditioning. As I state in the review, I would definitely recommend stepping up a trim level to Excite to get the right standard of equipment. The Xceed looks great, and I look forward to driving one at some point, but it will be much, much more expensive than a ZS, once equipment is taken into account. The ZS is actually put together quite well, but it isn't as high quality some of the more expensive rivals, which is really to be expected at this sort of price.

Yes, with the standard seven year warranty, I imagine that these will make excellent used buys in a couple of years' time. The specification choices they have made for the Explore models of the MG3 and the ZS are a bit unusual, but no one really buys them anyway, as most are on finance and the Excite is much better value on a finance deal than the Explore anyway.

They used to say that about Japanese cars and then Korean cars, The Chinese cars are just going to get better and better nad to be fair to the MG, they dont actually look to bad either.
