In this review, we go for a socially distanced, but still suitably attired, day out in the West Midlands in a wonderful 2020 MG ZS 1.5 Exclusive to see how practical it is, what it is like to drive and what it is like to own. Be prepared for in-jokes for fans of a certain long-running spy film franchise, references to Peter Serafinowicz's seminal spoof science series Look Around You, a very difficult tribute to William Woollard, possible failed attempts to prevent being sued by one of Germany's largest car makers (again), a 360 degree camera system, somewhat underwhelming performance, lots of USB ports, embossed MG logos on the seats, an enormous touch screen and generally very little of any consequence at all... Nothing untoward, then!

A great vehicle, love the new touches and changes, and an engine that’s perfectly capable, and if you’re willing to drive it hard, fun.

Yes, the Planet Auto style driving always gets the best out of every car, doesn't it? I agree, a very good car made even better by this comprehensive facelift.

Lloyd Vehicle Consulting not every one potters or is concerned about economy and some prospective buyers are interested to see a vehicle under load, it’s our job to show all sides. If you can drive, the flex and movement in the chassis allows for a fun and engaging drive, wouldn’t you agree? combine that with a revy engine that’s bullet proof, and an older style engine that’ll redline for fun, and it becomes quite an entertaining SUV.

I think that this is where RU-vid comes into its own, as we all have different focuses when we review cars, which is great. In particular, this car had done 25 miles when I drove it, and so I did have to be a little bit careful...

Thanks Joseph, lovely car and colour. Your right about the explore trim being unpopular, there are currently none for sale on autotrader. We really don't like base models in the UK nowadays. Maybe with the advert of PCP it's much cheaper to move up a few trim levels.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 4 года назад
Yes, most dealerships never used to stock the Explore model, so they would have to be ordered in specially, and the residual values were worse than the rest of the range, so PCP finance rates were not very good. Most people just stumpted up the extra for the much better equipped Excite!

Thanks for the review! Apart from the move to put more controls on the touchscreen this looks to be a solid mid-life facelift. The styling tweaks work really well and it is a genuinely nice looking car, lovely shade of blue. The engine is the weak point, but I suspect for most potential buyers it is adequate and it offers remarkable value for money. That said I would wait for the turbo 1.0. Actually I would spend a little more for the HS which really is a terrific car for not that much more.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 4 года назад
No problem at all, John! Yes, the new external styling has come out a real treat. The new 1.0 turbo automatic, if they use the same engine as before, would make this a very complete package indeed. As you say, though, for many this 1.5 normally aspirated four cylinder will be all they need. Thanks ever so much indeed again!

No problem at all, thank you ever so much indeed for watching! We eventually reviewed the facelifted 1.0 automatic version of this car in December 2020 on Tweed Jacket Reviews. Not sure if we consciously filmed the doors opening and closing for any particular reason, but glad you liked it!

@@GeordiLaForgery , I also have a review of the facelifted ZS 1.0 automatic, in addition to both pre-facelift petrol ZS variants and the ZS EV, on the Tweed Jacket Reviews playlist on my channel if you are interested. The only one I am missing is the new 1.0 manual, which I was going to film last month, but that has been delayed due to lockdown. If you like the doors opening and closing, then you are in for a treat!

@@lloydvehicleconsulting Haha thanks I'll have a looksie but I think 1 litre are best suited to small city hatchbacks. My understanding is they actually burn more fuel than a comparative 1.5 litre engine on a long motorway journey.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 3 года назад
@@GeordiLaForgery , it's not actually the case, really. I had a 1.0 TSI Seat Toledo, which is bigger than a Seat Leon, and that got 55-60 mpg on a long run. We ran a 1.5 MG3 at the same time (same engine as this ZS), and it would never do more than 43 mpg on a long journey despite being smaller and lighter. The 1.5 ZS feels very underpowered due to the lack of torque from the engine, the 1.0 is much, much better. I had a pre-facelift 1.0 ZS automatic on loan from MG Motor UK for a week in 2019 and covered about 500 miles in a week at an average of 42 mpg, which isn't bad for a heavy car like this. If you were to choose the new 1.0 manual ZS, then I would expect that to be a bit better too.
@AndrewKNI
@AndrewKNI 4 года назад
Interesting review Joseph. The revised ZS does look good. Stylish interior in your model. My Hyundai Tucson 1.6 (non-turbo) petrol is exactly the same re little torque. Steep hills can slow you down a lot, if not in the right gear. I'm told the new 1.6 diesel is much better.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 4 года назад
Thanks ever so much indeed, Andrew! Yes, they have really improved the design, and this colour sets it off very neatly. The interior was good to begin with, and is now even better. Just needs that turbocharged engine, and then it will be fantastic.

Great review! At the 20 minute mark you say that the reversing camera comes standard on ALL models as standard, is that correct and does that include the Excite?
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 3 года назад
I have been looking at the specifications and the Exclusive has the 360 camera, of course, and both have parking sensors, but it doesn't actually mention the reversing camera on the Excite. I am sure that I was told before I drove it that the Excite had a reversing camera, but best to check with your dealer about that...

Nice Video. Thanks. I just bought a 21 model ZST here in Australia, with the 1.3 turbo engine. plenty of power with 115kw of power. It would be great to see you do a video on that one. Thanks ever so much indeed! Yes, Mr Franks and I do love a bit of Hillsong United. Sadly, the 1.3 Turbo version is not in this country yet, and we don't know if it will be. If you watch the 1.0 Automatic review on this car that I did in December, then you will hear more about that situation, that should be on the Tweed Jacket Reviews playlist. It's much better than this 1.5 manual, that's for sure!

Thanks Joseph, on RU-vid catch-up at the moment! Interested whether you consider the ₤2,000 price rise on the previous model to be value for the additional kit, bearing in mind much of the car (including the engine) is unchanged? Would love to see an updated MG3 with a new engine, but I've heard chatter that the MG3 model itself may be discontinued.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 3 года назад
It's more like a £1500 price rise, depending on the model, and it is definitely worth it. The extra equipment, better styling, slicker infotainment system, nicer interior and improved safety features mean that the facelift certainly meets with my approval. The automatic should be out soon too, I gather. The MG3 is being replaced in 2021/2022, so I understand.

Solid review of the MG ZS there good sir! Not personally a fan of SUV style vehicles but I have to say, the MG ZS comes loaded with equipment for the price which is superb. The 1.5 does sound like it's weak point but I can imagine it would be a lot more spritely with the 1l turbo. Just wish they would put that 1l engine into the MG3...

@lloydvehicleconsulting 4 года назад
Yes, the MG3 would be brilliant with the 1.0 turbocharged engine! As you know, we had one for over three years, and it really was a fantastic little car. This new ZS is definitely excellent value for money with the new specification level.
@FuelPower
@FuelPower 4 года назад
I quite like the MG3. I just think the lack of engine choice is it's let down when it's main competitors (Dacia Sandero for example) all have an engine range to choose from. It has certainly got an appealing look to it. I have only heard good things about the MG3. Genuinely considered one when I purchased the Panda 100HP. MG as a brand are heading upwards in the world these days which is very nice to see.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 4 года назад
Oh yes, sir! I have masses of videos on our old MG3 and also the facelifted model that MG Motor UK very kindly let me borrow for a week last summer. It does just need a slightly wider range of powertrains, and then it would be even better. High equipment levels for the price and the seven year warranty from mid 2018 onwards are a clincher for many people, I think.
@CaiSpidox
@CaiSpidox 4 года назад
I think MG are getting there stride now. They just need to update the engine range and I think they will be spot on. The old 1.5 is just good enough for the mg3 as is. Though I see a change relatively soon with the new EU regulations coming in. Good review.
@lloydvehicleconsulting

Yes, they certainly have done really well, especially with this facelifted car. I do hope that the new automatic model comes along soon, I am sure that it will be brilliant. Having had a 1.5 VTi-Tech engine for 6 years, it's not struggling for torque, it just needs pushing a little harder than the tiny (and seemingly short lived) turbo engine eco engines we see nowadays. If you're used to a turbocharged engine, it just takes a little getting used to. Remember also, this car was less than 24 miles old - the engine will still be super tight and not representative of a real world engine in day to day usage. They start to open up about 2k+ miles and really loosen up about 5k+. It's not an exaggeration to say they are like a totally different car between a less than 1k engine and a 5k engine. Also anyone looking for more sportiness should be looking towards the MG6 GT Turbo (2011-14 petrol turbo) for probably the best MG sports car since the original MG ZS180 from the 2000's. Get a TSE spec and it has all the toys as well!! The MG3 is fun, but doesn't come close to the MG6 GT Turbo.

As I mentioned in the video, we owned a 2014 MG3 from 2016 until earlier this year, so I am also extremely familiar with the 1.5 engine. The review of that, and a 2019 MG3 which I had the privilege of borrowing from MG Motor UK, are on the channel. I have also tested an MG6 with the 1.8 Turbo engine (we actually filmed the review the same day as this one), and it was brilliant. I have tested all variants of the ZS SUV, except for the post-facelift 1.0 automatic which I hope to remedy soon, and one of our daily cars is a Rover 45 V6 (which is also on the channel). I have a ZS 180 review lined up, and I have also tested three ZT variants in the last year. With this in mind, I am also extremely familiar with this engine and how it performs in different cars, both with low and high mileage. I didn't like having to thrash our MG3 to get any sort of acceleration out of it all the time, which was one of the main disadvantages of an overall very, very good car. When I tested a 1.5 manual pre-facelift ZS that was around six months old at the end of last year (and yes, the review is on the channel), it felt very similar to this to drive, which isn't really surprising.

@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 3 года назад
Unless you are going to be doing exclusively town driving, I would not recommend the 1.5 manual at all. It is far too underpowered and lacking in torque, a five speed gearbox is a bit too old these days for such a nice car. I would either recommend the 1.0 turbo automatic version (which I reviewed on Tweed Jacket Reviews last month) or the brand new 1.0 turbo six speed manual which has literally just been released. When the lockdown eases a bit, I am hoping to drive the 1.0 manual....

@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 3 года назад
@@SamusWorth , yes, they are at very tempting prices, but I would not recommend the 1.5 at all. I took a client out in an MG3 over the weekend (amazingly, we were allowed to take it out at a dealer unaccompanied whilst following all the current lockdown rules, which was great), and she found it underpowered with the same engine and gearbox as a ZS, so imagine what that is like in a much heavier car. I source cars for clients on a professional basis, so if you need any help, feel free to get in touch via my website or Facebook page in the video description.

I'm seeing brand new Exclusive models on Autotrader from as little as £15,000-16,000 from places like Unity Coventry which looks extremely well specified for the price, however that 1.5 petrol does seem archaic and appears to let the side down. Still compared to the likes of Dacia or small Kias and Toyota's of equal price it still appeals
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 3 года назад
Yes, avoid that 1.5 petrol if at all possible. The 1.0 manual ZS with a six speed gearbox has just been released, and doubtless to say that I can't wait to try it once we can travel again. In comparison with the Kias and Toyotas they are phenomenal value, aren't they?

@@NIJ., the ZS EV Exclusive has the panoramic roof, it looks as if they have not decided to include the roof for the UK market petrol ZS facelift. The cars you saw were probably not UK specification, as the automatic will not be out until late 2020/early 2021. The lower specification car would have been an Excite.
