I lived in Wiesbaden when I was 7 years old. My father, retired Navy Chief Warrant officer worked for Raytheon as an instructor on the Hawk Missile Systems. 1960
I met Dr Bombay in a little hole in the wall bar in Glendale California, June 1985, oddly enough he had on his Dr. Bombay getup, I didn't ask why as I didn't want to bother him, he was a nice guy.
I think the Sgt Major in this video is the same actor who played a Brit senior NCO on COMBAT! It was the double episode where Saunders and his men were commanded by the Brit Captain (not sure of the rank) to stay with them. They are attacked again and again by the Germans and then oddly enough the Germans who had been attacking them surrender to Saunders. The Brit commander was dead by then.
I just don't care about the nitpicking inaccuracies. Probably fewer than 0.01% of the viewing public would recognize them, and they did, they would suspend disbelief in favor of enjoying a good show. It is a drama, not an historical documentary.
I downloaded the entire series from a torrent over 10-years ago and was disappointed that this episode was damaged. Recently I was finally able to purchase a new set of all 3-searons. I was very disappointed that the video on the original DVD is also damaged. Does anyone know where I can get an undamaged copy pf this episode? When I was a kid I watched this series and all the re-runs I could find on TV. The original combat footage was simply incredible and they had a large fleet of aircraft to film the series. Anyway I would like to get to watch this episode without youtube access. The DVD encoding always fails at 70.2 MB and on my set of DVDs it is on Disc 5 track 13. There is no media error the raw video is truncated. Thanks, kindly
B-17s did not fly at night nor did they drop British Commandos. The British would have marked this night target with flares from pathfinder Mosquitos and pasted it with high explosive from 600 Lancasters. They carried a much larger payload than a B-17. As a Canadian, thanks for winning the war for us.
I was thinking, if the Germans were using radar guided anti-Aircraft fire, why didn't the Americans and /or RAF use Chaff/Window? They had already introduced it last season...
It’s called fictional. I really like this show because it is always full of action, interpersonal stories and disputes, and it doesn’t matter that the reality quota is zero at worst and 1-2/10 the rest of the time 🕰️, I could rip every episode apart for realism but then it would ruin my enjoyment of something that doesn’t even pretend to be realistic.
You watch a serial free on you tube and you're cribbing about authenticity ! You'll get authenticity on Netflix alright , at a price . Enjoy free deserts !
HAHAHAHA ! Gadfly ! I haven't heard that one in a Long time ! "...intentionally annoying person who provokes others, usually by using persistent irritating criticism."
pjzdreamz Good Lord. I really do not think Commandos of ANY service expose themselves day or night, talk in a loud our even normal voice without a deadly reason...or gather in any open area in a war zone. I DO know that the SEALs I had the privilage to meet and drink with in Coronado, CA. can finish whatever someone starts with them in record time !
+gallantrycross Would it have been a good idea to spank her backside for her atrocious behavior. I would have put her over my knee and picked up her dress first, Yum!
@Legion 57 This was the repressed part of the 1960's, not the counterculture part. Raping a captured enemy woman just wouldn't have been portrayed, although you can bet it went on. Just like real commandos would not have hesitated to off her, just like they did her dog.
It's a TV show, entertainment. Most of these WW2 TV shows and movies have a ton of inaccuracies in them. One shot they show the squadron as B17s the next they're 24 Liberators and in some episodes B25s. Still a good show.
I remember as a kid watching these, I never questioned any of the things we notice today. Mainly just loved seeing people in uniforms, military actions, and aircraft/air combat footage!
@@surfachi, That's funny! You want to nitpick and, not only did you not capitalize Wiesbaden, you spelled it wrong. Also, if you are so worried about it being authentic, I was stationed with the USAF at Wiesbaden AFB in the 70's and it was very rare to hear an American pronounce it with a "V", so they were historically correct in having them pronounce it with a "W". To top it off, you said that in German "W" is pronounced like a "V". They weren't speaking German. If we are going to nitpick, I can to that too.
Sorry for the nit - do you have any idea how HOT that shearling lined coat Sandy is wearing would be roaming about in a moderate temperature??? Those were designed for FRIGID temperatures in an unpressurized B-17 at altitude,
Fun Fact: Across from Wiesbaden lays the city of Mainz just devided by the Rhine Nowdays the seat of the German Federal Police ( BUNDESKRIMINALPOLIZEI ) is located in Weisbaden.
Well a good story but many problems with the plot- the Commandos why would a group parachute in to attack a military target armed only with hand guns and then engage in a fire fight with a larger force only equipped with hand guns- next during the war Wiesbaden had no heavy industry. There were several military installations around the city but most the factories were across the river in Mainz.
The idea of a commando raid is to inser covertly, not jump in the glare of searchlights. If they did that the enemy would be waiting on the ground for them to land
I know this is totally Monday morning quarterbacking but wouldn't have been helpful to have had some kind of steel plating that you could slide back and forth alongside the right and left side cockpit windshields, just for when flak or enemy fighters would be a problem? It seems every episode a pilot is either severely wounded or killed by such attacks. Seems like movable steel plating could have reduced some of the casaulties. Just a thought.
They had armor around the cockpits and "bullet proof glass" so they wee protected to some degree but those aircraft had 20mm and 30 mm guns that could defeat it. .
A couple of airmen can outfight a Commando unit? HAHAHA They aren't even infantry trained, much less to the Commando level. Oh Well - that's Hollywood for you.
Leave it to the British to take time out during a commando raid operation for a spot of tea. What a joke. It could've been a Hogan's Heroes episode. Commandos hardly ever let themselves get captured by the enemy, because their extreme special training on stealth, speed and strength is like no other soldier.
The idea that a B-17 would drop commandoes at night over Germany is a fiction. British commandos were trained in the British jump method and were flown by British transports with special jump openings in the belly of the plane, designed like smooth funnels. A B-17 bomb bay has too many projections to allow jumpers with the bulky backpacks to get through without catching on to something. Commandos jumping with only something like a reserve chute is unthinkable. Just sayin'.
Well, a better episode than the previous two - that's for sure. Still choppy and far-fetched (to say the least) and this third season continues to show a downgrade.
I think it has to do with how much the actor is paid, but not quite sure if he gets more or less if they are a guest star or occasional regular cast member.
Relieve him of his command if his group doesn't destroy flak batteries? Wow. That's a tough call when just hitting factories was a demanding task. I usually liked General Britt's character, but that scene was poorly written. Interesting that in real life Andrew Duggan was only three years older than Paul Burke. I would have thought Duggan was ten years older. By the way, it would be fun to list all the inconsistencies in this series. I don't get too critical, but these days they have continuity editors to at least keep things straight from scene to scene.
Yeah, they have an AI trying to decipher british brogue. It isn't any smarter than a third world citizen. When the hot action started it was unable to offer the slightest statement, much less a real conversation. Never laughed so much during a war film. YT must be proud. :-)
LOL! Bullshit. I lived in Wiesbaden over 12 years. It was bombed only lightly compared to Mainz. Mainz was where the industry was concentrated. As I recall Henkel, the Sekt producer was bombed because they were producing some war related material on the side.
What a crap...wiesbaden bever was any kibd of fortress nor was it an important target, no night missions no mixure with raf. And the precision bombing of 8 af is just a fairy tale...just carpet bombing
That 'verdant German' countryside and building is strikingly similar to the countryside you see in US Westerns 😂😂😂 and why is every British person named Higgins in US productions. A little more imagination might go down well. Quite frankly I cannot see why so many of you think this programme is so good. It's so bad it's laughable.
Exactly. It is very much like an accident from which one cannot avert the gaze. So astoundingly bad that you simply continue watching it to enjoy the low quality of it all.
