@@taroman7100 Which was really dumb, because I've always thought that he was very handsome. Also if I remember correctly, it was felt that with the move to a different day and time slot, that a rough tough General would not be accepted by a younger audience. I enjoyed Gregory Pecks portrayal in the original movie, but Robert Lansing "was" Frank Savage and while the show was still good afterwords, it lost a certain spark when they killed him off. I can't help but think that the show would have lasted longer if they'd left him in command of the 918th.

Being a civilian is a good idea unless there is a real war against a real threat to the USA ... Congress ought to be able to do that.

not to sound mean... but if you can imagine a conversation between tv producers film makers and writers making films and tv with the active co-operation of the armed forces ... as they usually are.. You are describing the intended effect and how it worked on you. The 8th was teenagers led by 21 year old veterans ..too awful to portray only 20 years after these missions were flown ... in a "good war". Geo H W Bush had be 20 years old for a month or so when fished out of near Japanese capture by a U S sub. The average age of death in combat in Viet Nam was younger than Geo H W Bush at that moment in his war.

When I was in England in the '80's, I flew on C-130's all over East Anglia. The abandoned, disused airfields were everywhere! Most had a little concrete remaining, the rest removed to put up buildings and roads. A ghostly outline of the runways remained. I imagine a tableaux like this playing out at every one of them in 1943.

Robert Lansing provided a remarkable performance in 12 O'clock High (Season-01 Episode-01) akin to the breath-holding scene of Richard Basehart and Richard Widmark and Rip Torn in the finale of what was then a "B" war-time movie "TIME LIMIT"which also starred Martin Balsam. Today it would be a blockbuster! The "telling off" scene of Lansing to Burke in 12:00 High was thrilling and spellbounding-you just could't look away and the realization that you were watching a movie was completely lost to you. A thing of beauty that today's so-called 'STARS' who are nothing more than Ham actors that will never hold a candle to the likes of Bogey, March, Clift, Robinson, etc. Even the old cinema CHARACTER actors such as (Royal Dano; Jack Elam; Dean Jagger; Karl Malden, Bruce Dern, Jack Weston, Jack Warren, etc)..-- I notice a lot of the very best 50s-60-s series were QM Productions such as The Fugitive; The FBI; 'Twelve O'Clock High' and so on. From those days' to these day there hasn't been a STAR- much less a character actor- that could be at par with ANY of the many (and many more) true craftsmen named above. And that's a shame. I used to love TV when the credits could say "Original story by..."--now it's all unworthy REHASH. "12 Angry Men" was one of the best films ever written (all the acting took place in a single jury room); well, 30 years later, throw in fancy-pants Tom Cruise and a Black Denzel Washington and 10 other un-legged fowl and it pops out of the box-office faster than "JACK"! Costner couldn't have saved it and he was about the only Hmm...actor? I COULD stomach until he spoiled that for me with that stupid "Bodyguard" (spoiled his career too.! Give yourself a treat ASAP---Watch Robert Ryan; Bogey (the greatest of all); Ann Sheridan; Lee J Cobb; Charles Laughlin, Joan Blondell, Paul Newman, Montgomery Clift and the great John Garfield whom we lost at age 39 to a heart attack.! If you just watch Tracy in "The Fury" or Humphrey Bogart in "The Caine Mutiny" or "Desperate Hours" that will surely be enough to convince you that the Golden days of Hollywood) really were gilded (and gifted) with it. Not a single idiotic Woody Allen freak in sight! So, if you truly love good ACTING and not just a bunch of 'fools on screen blowing up stuff and saying phony, unnecessary lines (make my day started that shit) and a dude giving a solo spiel to his bud for 2 or 3 min while stretched out dying (still ALIVE i suppose w/ fifteen or twenty .45 caliber slugs in him?) LOL!! Well, like I said, today's MOVIES are a damn sad joke! And a joke on the folks that pay to SEE the crap! And how is it that WHOEVER shows up on one of these "REALITY" shows becomes an instant STAR when 2/3s of people don't even know who they are or what they do? A STAR is someone my MOTHER knows the name of even if she doesn't know the movie or show or the song (and only ever saw a pic of one or two of them, such as Cher and/or Arnold Schwartznegger! She knew of Michael Jackson, Madonna, Marlyn Monroe and Loretta Lynn; though she couldn't tell you what they are/were famous for___Now... THAT is a STAR !!

Get your head out of your past. All you "they don't make 'em like they used to" people who mistake nostalgia for quality. Most of the Golden Age "stars" (Bogey, Cagney, Flynn. Wayne...) couldn't act worth spit. They were "personalities". Today we have Morgan Freeman, Anthony Hopkins, Al Pacino, DeNiro, Dustin Hoffman, Jack Nicholson and yes even Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio...and on and on. Any of which could out act any of the old school "STARS" of the past.

As a "Brit" and without military experience - but with a great interest in things 20th century military - I noticed that the actor playing Gen., Savage seems to give a very sloppy salute in response to the subordinate's initial salute. The subordinate "snaps up" a straight handed salute, yet Savage frequently gives a "casual curled palm" salute - often when looking down/away from the subordinate. It's not the first time I've noticed this difference between saluting styles on TV/in movies in the '40's through to current day. OK, higher rank does have it's privileges, but surely in real life military, the same respect would be shown/used. I realise that what we see on TV/movies is done by actors, but I'm amazed that directors and their military advisors let the actors get away with it!

Shooting airmen in parachutes was supposedly anathema to both sides in the air war in Europe. Gustav Rödel, Jaggeschwader 27: "You are fighter pilots first, last, always. If I ever hear of any of you shooting at someone in a parachute, I'll shoot you myself." Luftwaffe commander-in-chief Hermann Göring asked Luftwaffe fighter ace Adolf Galland about what he thought about shooting enemy pilots while in their parachutes, even over their own territory. Galland replied that, "I should regard it as murder, Herr Reichsmarschall. I should do everything in my power to disobey such an order". Goering-who had been a fighter ace himself during World War I-said, "That is just the reply I had expected from you, Galland". There must've been incidences, but perhaps this episode uses a bit of artistic license

Square A is the 94th BG! The 918th used the 91st BG tail markings but using them interchangeably? I'm sure TV audiences in 1964 didn't even notice. The Luftwaffe was not known for strafing men in chutes. It had a high regard for chivalry. And you never broke formation to protect someone...you lost at least 10 guns and compromised "group integrity" as authors Lay and Bartlett, both 8th AF veterans, stated in their book.

Sally Kellerman never looked or sounded better. This episode highlights Frank Overton's role. The key person in the series. Dean Jagger won an Oscar for his performance in the movie. Frank did not let him down. The calm person in the middle.

What people may not understand is most orders are not popular among the troops. When your in a position to issue and enforce those orders their is a heavy burden that comes with it. Its not easy on that person because your gambling with peoples lives. We tend to forget that those very unpopular orders won the war.

It's weird how the German pilots were able to hit the bombers in the exact same bullet strike pattern in all episodes. I knew they were good, but had no idea they were that good.

I see there are no O2 masks despite the high altitude. Most actors cant act with a mask on but Gregory Peck could. Even Tom Cruise has to take his mask off to act in Top Gun, presumably to enable him to breath. Lots of other shows have the same problem. Memphis bell is the same way, you have to take off your mask in order to breath. Same with warm clothing. Garrison attire is not appropriate for 20 below zero temps. Again Gregory Peck had it right.

In real combat during WW-II did the general fly every mission as they did in this movie?
@noygdbizyness800
@noygdbizyness800 9 лет назад
+John Moore No. Nobody, especially the senior officers, flew EVERY mission, not even in this TV series ! Thousands of missions were flown during WW2 by our bombers . I can't find (so far) references to any General who actually commanded a bomber group, and only a few who flew more than a few missions after making that rank. There are officers who as squadron and group commanders over the rank of captain made more than 40 missions. I heard of one Lt. Colonel who made over 70 missions during the course of the war. I'm still looking tho !
