I cant tire watching this particular episode. It’s the dialogue which I keep listening to and every time I watch it I get new insights. 12 o’Clock High is a story of the Greatest Generation that ever lived. The lessons they teach apply even today. This is one series I dont find “old” or archaic.

Agreed, and the continuity written into the Gallagher character was very good. I watched this show when I was a kid and loved it, but watching it now all these years later I appreciate it even more. Yes, Lansing was extraordinary, but I think Burke did a fine job playing a very different sort of character. Gallager was the subject of the very first episode aired (S1E1) and his somewhat entitled attitude as the son of a high ranking general really rankles the tough no nonsnese Savage, who held him in quite a bit of contempt. Gallagher figures into another episode later in Season One also. I always thought it was a severe mistake to get rid of Lansing, but given that they did, I am glad when they decided to elevate Gallagher to Group Commander, they did not "forget" who he was and where he was from and essentially rewrite the character to be more like Savage. They kept his background and his flaws, like his hot headedness, for example, intact, and it shows well in this episode, which I thought was very strong all around. The character continuity made the series as a whole more rewarding. It would be very interesting to see this series reboot today with the extremely high production values and writing that television these days provides. It would be fascinating to see it handled with a level of realism on the order of a Band Of Brothers or Hacksaw Ridge. Of course, both those productions were based on real life people and events, while 12 O'Clock High used fictional characters and events that were more of a composite drawn from actual people (General Frank Armstrong was the model for Savage and Ira Eaker the model for Gen. Pritchard.)

Great episode, especially because I worked with Ricks Falk who played Cristy's Co-Pilot in Act IV. He is a fine, Christian man and heckuva nice guy. He left Hollywood, said it was a bit too wild for him, moved to Oakdale CA, and worked as a Service Representative for Pacific Telephone. 12 O'Clock was an outstanding TV series.

Having spent six years of my career at the Pentagon, the interaction of senior officers in this episode was well played. When Joe was about to protest to his three-star, his Dad gave him a disapproving look that said "Shut up and trust your own two-star boss to do his job." That was a brilliantly staged scene. I've lived that scene several times as an O6 briefing my three-star. The only difference was my two-star kicked me in the calf anytime he thought I was about to get out of line or speak out of turn. My leg sometimes got sore in those meetings, but it probably spared me from a worse fate. I discovered I wasn't so senior in pay grade that I didn't have something to learn from my boss. He didn't get where he was by being stupid. Of course, he was the only general officer who ever kicked me. Maybe he enjoyed it.

A great episode. For what this is worth thanks to everyone who backs up or at least tips a hat to Paul Burke. Take it from a stage hand that's heavy acting he's taking on, and the character is constantly pushing to prove something (note Season 1 opener). I know that a Burke fan can't convince the anti-Burke Blitz on anything but Burke didn't "remove" Lansing, there's a long story there. There WAS a Lansing audience but the Neilsens for 64/65 had the show in something like 101st place in End of Season Tally of all shows fall through summer. Reworked show moved to Mondays 730pm and it did reasonably well obtaining a 30% required "share of audience. " The Zeitgeist wouldn't allow a very long run, we should be grateful we got what we got. Special thanks to our supplier, too.

Historical trivia for my civilian friends...When I served, "rank" did not exist in combat at the team level. We respected each other and deferred to those with more experience and "time in the area" meant a lot. The only time we addressed one another by rank was in the rear, and the only people who demanded "rank" recognition 24/7 were the REMF's who never got near anything bolder than a laundry room or a desk., LOL When this was series was made for TV, Quinn Martin Productions was pretty brave because people were already weary of "wars" and any reminders. Vietnam was going on and the MSM bombarded us with it every time the news came on. Nowadays, the media is more concerned with the kind of suits our politicians wear, than to cover our wars accurately.

The story went world wide in minutes and we could never prove or disprove that claim. The end result was the Marines were pulled out for no other reason than public opinion!! What a shame, the city was almost cleared, the enemy almost defeated, and the city's population almost saved. ALL that changed, so thank your faithful and true, always above suspension average (freedom of the press) reporters, trained in the exact same methods the Nazis and our own reporters of WWII were trained. The civilians will never stand against them, they know that for sure. So get ready for a Whole Lot More!!!!!!!!!!

This show frequently depicts two captains in a B-17 cockpit. That would be rare. Typically it would be a captain and a first or second lieutenant. You would more often see an experienced first lieutenant and a second lieutenant. Sometimes there would be an experienced first lieutenant with a recently-promoted first lieutenant. On a few occasions a lieutenant colonel or colonel would fly a mission. His co-pilot would probably be a captain or an experienced first lieutenant.
@rollandfitch5473

I am not sure what the training timeline was in 1940 but in today's service, it is long enough that most co-pilots of crewed aircraft would be a 1st Lt and the pilot would be a Captain. In the Navy Maritime Patrol Aircraft (P-8) the there are three pilots designated Patrol Plane Commander (PPC), O-3, 2P a recently promoted O-3, and 3P (most likely recently reported O-2). There are typically 4 O-4s in a squadron as department heads, and 2 O-5s (CO/XO). They all fly regularly as PPC or MC depending on whether they are Naval Aviators or Naval Flight Officers. The MC or Mission commander is responsible for the accomplishment of the Mission where the PPC is responsible for Safe Operation of the Aircraft.

Its nice when family members stick up for each other. Tell an incident that happened in Afghanistan a few years ago and the ranks remain the same plus a major. The major reported to his colonel that a local police captain ( known pedophile) should be investigated because of his control over a young teenager. Nothing was done and that young teenager walked into a recreational building and shot and killed 3 American servicemen. The major reported himself because of the way he reported to the colonel , and after 2 investigations by 2 different departments, it was decided ( can't remember the exact wording),that there was no breach of security in the method of communication between the 2 officers. But a general with a (few stars) decided that the major had to be drummed out of the service. Just happened that the senior general was friends with another general (less stars), who happened to be the father of the colonel who did nothing with the information he was supplied with, and as a result was responsible for the deaths. So they drummed out the major and nothing against the colonel.

11:58 .. I KNOW PATTON WATCH OUT OR YOU HAVE THE JOB OF HIS... Historically an accurate remarke in those days. That had been brourght over very well in the movie PATTON. Indeed the ingenius man dropped to often over his own tongue and his to impuisive, unwise political (re-)actions otherwise he cuold had become the American Zone commander in Germany after the War. Originally he had been on the best way to it. So instead Lucius D. Clay got the job.

@Trev0r98 4 года назад
"Well, if we're gonna bomb from 600 feet, we won't have far to fall, will we?" Meaning, a fall from 600 feet wouldn't be as painful as the other, much farther fall he and Gallagher Jr. were going to face (stern disciplinary action, public disgrace & court martial).
@lsmart

@@Trev0r98 Thanks, you're right. I understood more or less what he was intending, but it just bugged me that I couldn't make out his words. There are lots of similar cases in TV and film where guys make unclear statements. I never understood why the director would not require the actors to re-read the line more clearly.

The writers of this episode have excellent dialogue. Why can’t Hollyweird write anything good like this anymore? Because the quality of the Homo sapiens in LA are so low. They are worse than Neanderthals, because of their low character.

I now only watch ME TV, a retro station that has programs from the 1950s and 60s to, 70s. The quality of writting and the message of self-responsibility, moral responsibilty etc., really highlights how bad TV is today. By the 1970s shows you can see the pro-leftist messaging and vulgarity. Also blaming everthing conservative as being crazy anti-communist paranoia or religious bigots..Watching today clearly shows the Marxist Hollywood influltration got underway by the late 60s...and look at what we have now today. Operation Mockingbird, -the CIA pushing this exact revolution in 1967- is very obvious when watching the change over time.

I agree- Burke sucked and ruied the show for me. I ,like may orhers- prefered Lansing. Lansings management style is more in line with the original movie, and its even been studied as a prefered “people management” method. Burkes portail is that of a sucky, wimpy ,”sorry for himself” cry baby. Although I understand it was part of the story line, it was FAR LESS enjoyable to watch the show. Burkes acting (even if it suits his role) is also not as exciting tomwatch as Robert Lansings “Quit your bitching , you are capabable of beiing the best- Now lets go to war “ motivation!

Roy Rodriguez . . . the bombing raids blew up the buildings and tons of equiptment and supplies used to prosses the "heavy" water. Underground factions can NEVER be given enough credit for thier contributions to any war effort.
