I'm a software engineer by trade, and I have to say Wendell is like the Rosetta Stone for me learning about Enterprise tech. I have never been exposed to it professionally, but I love learning about these things and how they might be brought down to the "mere IT mortal" level. I support two clusters which utilize OPA, and it works great. Much easier to setup than Infiniband. On one cluster, we use it with a BeeGFS clustered file system to achieve really high write concurrency. The real reason it didn't take off like it should is Mellanox cut their prices to compete for the first time ever. At that point, most IT shops didn't want to take a risk on the new tech when they could get the proven solution for the same price.

It also never worked well with GPFS. IBM eventually gave up and dropped support.

I have found IB to be actually really easy to set up. Once you have the OpenSM subnet manager running (if you have an externally managed switch), you install the driver (whether the "inbox" Mellanox drivers that ships with your distro) or the MLNX_OFED drivers, assign an IP address to the port, and you're up and running. It's actually really, really simple/quick to get IB up and running. I think that my IB deployment notes/list of commands for CentOS is maybe only like 4 lines long. Something like that.

@@niemand5720 More brake pads = more brake pads to replace. The ACTUAL, obvious, solution is PMEM200, but on a $/GB basis, it's still significantly more than even U.2 NVMe SSDs. What they should REALLY do is bring back the ability to create a distributed stripped gvol of RAM drives (which was a supported configuration in GlusterFS 3.7), that way, you can just have RAM nodes where it runs a stripped down version of RHEL (or CentOS), creates the RAM drive as a GlusterFS brick, and joins the distributed stripped gvol, which you can then re-export back to the 100 Gbps network as a NFSoRDMA share. Still pricey on a $/GB basis, but being that it's a RAM drive, you don't have to worry about replacing the "brake pads" like you do with ANY kind of SSD. Or, alternatively, looking forward to CXL. (We'll see how THAT goes.)

Is OnmiPath related to QuickPath Interconnect (QPI)? This kind of tech could be used to produce motherboards that would be just child numa nodes to remote master numa node.
@ewenchan1239
@ewenchan1239 Год назад
No, QPI is different. QPI is socket-to-socket communication (or socket-to-PCH communication). Omni Path (and/or Infiniband) is communication BETWEEN nodes. But yes, I have used Infiniband to have node0/socket0 talk to node1/socket0 and achieved better throughput with that than node0/socket0 talking to node0/socket1. RDMA is AWESOME for that.

Here's a question I think you have never heard. Which motherboard manufacturer has mastering grade audio converters on board? I don't think there are any, but I was hoping that you could find out what converters the various manufacturers use for each motherboard. Many builders have been marketing their PC builds as best for music production, so I thought it was only fair that we be told what converters are built into onboard audio. Perhaps manufacturers will begin creating offerings for music creators.
@Lovedbychrist1
@Lovedbychrist1 Год назад
Use an external interface. Until someone puts balanced professional (XLR) connectors on their boards its not even the start of a contest. More than the converters go into a mastering grade DAC to provide a low noise floor, and linear (ish) sound profile. Note: an entry level external interface starts at $1-200, there is a reason for that, and the cost associated is not worth it for a motherboard manufacturer to bring into a motherboard. To answer your question: they are almost all Realtek DACs which haven’t changed much since about 2005. One of the other things that matters in DACs (audio interfaces) is software tuning to account for electrical scruples. All professional DACs do that to some degree, and motherboard manufacturers aren’t going to add a specialized team to hit what’s effectively a very small market when they can’t compete with existing companies.

I don't have any experience with Omni Path (but I do have 100 Gbps Infiniband deployed in the basement of my home), and this just sounds like it would be quite a massive headache, trying to get it do what you want it to do. IB has been around a LOT longer than Omni Path (defacto standard system interconnect for a LONG time for supercomputers), and so, overall, it's a vastly more mature technology, and it's gotten to the point where a lot of it "just works". If you get the Mellanox ConnectX VPI cards, that's even better because you can run the ports either in IB mode or in ETH mode (which is awesome). (Or you can stay with IB mode, and just use IPoIB.) I can't imagine Omni Path being nearly as capable, and I think that the lack of support, especially from the software side of things, is at least a part of what's holding Omni Path back. (i.e. with OpenMPI - you can tell it to use the IB transport protocol) My LTO-8 tape backup system uses said 100 Gbps IB connection back to my main Proxmox server, even though, at best, the LTO-8 tape only writes at an absolute max of 360 MB/s. IB is more expensive than this cast-off Omni Path hardware, but it is, based on my experience with IB, a LOT easier to get IB up and running.
