I remember when I was extremely suicidal. The line "tie a noose around your mind loose enough to breathe fine and tie to a tree tell it you belong to me this aint a noose this is a leash and you belong to me" was what I used to save myself from me. Really, thank you guys so much. You didn't cure my depression, no, but you helped me reach graduation. Thank you so much. Edit: 5 years later, I'm doing ok. Got into drugs, got outta drugs, went to a mental hospital, but I'm doing good. Weird to think back to how much twenty one pilots impacted me when I don't listen to them anymore. Crazy. Edit 2: 8 years later. Free from any su*cid*** ideation for 2 years now. Bad things have happened over the years, but that doesn't mean life is bad. I wish I could hug the young girl who wrote this 8 years ago. She was perfect the way she was and is now.

Anyone else notice the connection between temperature and emotions in Tyler's writing? Like in the song Oh Ms. Believer where cold and snow represent depression. "We get colder as we grow older" or The pantaloon "It's colder than you know, cause your skin is so used to colder bones" Etc. Then on the flip side, there's Holding on to You and Ode to Sleep. Chloe Bease Not really. Some people really did feel lost and they were probably going to take their lives but then they might have stumbled upon this band. And a lot of people are helped by music and they can hide behind it as a barrier. Music helps a lot of depressed people, or just anybody, not only depressed people. And their lyrics could have saved somebody's life. And I know they saved mine, don't try to make me think otherwise because I was really falling at that point in time, and if I hadn't found twenty one pilots, I would have kept going down and feeling worse, and I might have just ended up killing myself tbh.

No, you need to give yourself more credit. Music can encourage you, uplift you, and help you, but Tyler Joseph isn't your savior. He is just a person and you resonated with his emotions. He encouraged you to help yourself and I completely agree.

I have attempted suicide 4 times in my 25 years. I just discovered this band and after watching this video and listening to the lyrics I can't stop thinking about the part he's singing when the noose is around his neck. It describes depression and suicidal thoughts PERFECTLY. When he says its a leash and not a noose and he's in control, thats incredibly inspiring. Does he or has he ever struggled with depression or suicide? I feel like this comes from deep inside of him. I watched the behind the scenes video as well and that hit me hard.

Yes, Tyler has had depression. It used to be unbearable (for me) to watch any interviews or anything cause you could just see it in his eyes. Tyler has had some rough spots, but I think he's getting a little better now that he has Jenna. Stay alive fren|-/

+Christine Kaus I would be incredibly surprised if Tyler never struggled with depression or anxiety (or both). Many of his songs describe it so perfectly, in ways that people who don't live with it struggle to understand. Being out of control of your own thoughts, your own mind, feeling like there's someone else pulling the strings in your brain...it's something that makes you sound crazy to other people, but those of us who live with it understand it perfectly. And Tyler seems to be trying to inspire others to fight that kind of situation, obviously in this song, but also in many others (like Car Radio, where he straight-up says, "faith is to be awake, and to be awake is for us to think, and for us to think is to be alive, and I will try with every rhyme to come across like I am dying to let you know you need to start to *think*"--in other words, "I'm expressing my depression to inspire you to stay alive").

Befs Lyfe I'm almost positive he's referencing an awful song from 2001. A hip hop group called "dem franchize boyz" had a popular song and dance called "lean wit it, rock wit it." After he says that line in this song he says "when we gonna stop with it, lyrics that mean nothing, we were gifted with thought." I really think he's saying music is garbage because people don't give it enough thought. They just want it to make money. A lot of artists will have a song that's about absolutely nothing but because there is a dance with it it becomes popular. A good recent example is "whip it/ nae nae." That song is trash but it sold millions. Maybe I'm way off here but this is why I think he used that line. I'm also 31 so I was around when "dem franchize boyz" were a popular thing. It was sad. Haha

Those ppl that left were never really TOP fans because, if so, then they wouldn't leave just because their impatient. This thought bugs me constantly. Branden Henderson Honestly, don't mind them. If those "fans" can't wait, then they can leave. Their numbers don't outweigh the number of more patient, understanding fans. It takes time to produce good music. Everyone should know this. For now, let's just ignore the impatient fans. I have panic and anxiety attacks and when I do, all there is to do is to ride them out. So I always chant to myself (in my mind) "That's it, let go, just let it do its thing, it'll pass; don't fight it, don't resist, just let it flow through you, it'll soon be over; you're OK, everything's OK, go with it, wait it out" Since I heard this song, I sometimes include the "Lean with it, rock with it" and it distracts me 'cause I start singing the rest as well. 😁

Anxiety n depression I've dealt with all my life.. panic attacks are rough feel like I got beat with a bat..my panic attacks stopped in 08 when I started writing n performing music.. still have anxiety butt no more pass n out purple lol..

To those who make fun of depression, anxiety and suicide, it's not funny. Don't try to sound "cool" or try to fit in by saying stuff like that. You most likely never had depression, anxiety or suicidal thoughts, if you did you wouldn't be laughing, you'd be crying into your pillow every night. Those who bully people for their weight, for the way they look, for their sexuality, for their gender. STOP! They aren't bothering you at all. Leave them alone. Every time you bully someone it hurts them. They keep all of their emotions inside, they cry themselves to sleep at night, they cut or starve themselves, they may attempt or commit suicide. Do the world a favor and don't bully someone. If you aren't eating because someone called you fat PLEASE eat. If you are cutting because someone hurt you, PLEASE stop. If you are crying because someone is mean to you PLEASE stop. Wipe your tears away, put the blades down, put the rope away, empty the pills in the sink, go and eat. You are BEAUTIFUL the way you are. You are you. Don't let someone change you. Don't let someone ruin your day because of one rude remark. Lift up your head and stop starring at the ground. You have a bright future to look forward to. All of those with depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts or have been bullied or have cut. Take my advice and please follow it. Thank you so much for reading all of this. I'm here for anyone that needs someone to talk to when you're depressed or are about to do something bad. (Please don't put too many hate replies)

I remember listening to this at 13-14, having no sense of self-worth, just surviving everyday. I'm listening to this at 19, with a genuine love for myself and belief that I deserve to exist and be seen for who I am. My therapist recently told me I am doing well enough to stop for a while and that and this song remind me of how much I've grown. Stay alive. |-/
