We thought we were done. We thought we were over it already, but we dipped back into the IROC's engine yet again with another lead on the noise.

Hey Declan, don’t give up man. You’re gonna have an awesome car when you’re done and you’ll have memories with dad that you’ll never forget.

Definitely spun rod bearing which means the whole engine has to come out. Great pain, even greater gain. But it wasn't for nothing, every moment a great learning opportunity. How many beautiful memories to look back on with pride, all the (tens of) thousands of dollars saved by doing it yourself...and everybody loves someone who knows how to get things fixed. Pull out, disassemble, repair, reassemble, put back in-I anticipate at least a dozen if not two dozen more episodes...and that's just the engine...not counting the interior and bodywork. Finally, how many young men can walk into a (potential future) interview and say: "I'm self-taught. I learned from watching and doing alongside my dad. It's on RU-vid if you don't believe me."

One of the most satisfying things I have ever done is to take my frustration out on a long extension. I whipped it out the open garage door into the street. I felt much better afterward and returned to fix the problem with my 87 Vette. No one was hurt and nothing was damaged. I finally got the problem fixed too.

Gentleman, picking my brain as my General Motors parts career started in 1988. If memory serves me correctly, Chevrolet had a cam and lifter issue in 88- 89. The issue was premature wear of the cam and lifters on the 305, as well as engine blocks cracking in the lifter valley. I believe GM had a service bulletin for this issue, and it was handled under warranty. In your video, I saw all rocker arms moving as designed. However, you could still have a cam lobe or more worn as well as wear in your lifters. Understandably I am not saying it is the problem, just a possibility. I haven't forgotten to send that book I mentioned. I just need to get my butt to the post office. Your fan from Springfield, Mike!!😊

Good awesome car I’ve 2 1988 gta trans ams with the 5.7 you and both cars I had the same thing it was a spun bottom end bearing which was number 8 cylinder both times so I rebuilt both engines with upgraded cams and rocker arms and also had to get new crankshafts because there a one peace rear main seal and weren’t repairable also after replacing everything they never did it again it’s a common problem with those motors I still have one today after the rebuild I have well over 100000 miles on it and not all easy miles

I think you're right, the pushrods are fine. However, you have to pull them to really check them.
@JaCk3D3Y3
@JaCk3D3Y3 23 дня назад
try relashing first, if that doesn't work, yank the engine, check the bearing, if it's spun, rebuild time! Meaning engine and trans come out

Hey guys what about the cam lobes? You could be having some cam lobs flattening out and that could put the shimmering stuff in your oil. This would also affect your lifters too.

I said in a previous video comment that the hydraulic lifters can make this noise. A oil change with detergent oil and Rislone additive can clean up the lifters without having to change them. It's a easy thing to do.
@ThrowingWrenchesGarage
@ThrowingWrenchesGarage 25 дней назад
It’s beyond lifter noise. Metal in the oil and a terrible racket deep in the engine. I may not be able to pinpoint the issue but I know we’re going to have to pull it to get to the bottom of it

Connecting rod bearing? That would let your oil pressure be good and still give you a knock.

Flat cam lobes or colapsed lifter would explain the rattle.
@ThrowingWrenchesGarage

I’m suspecting the cam is wiped and a few lifters are collapsed

It’s never too late to learn. I knew nothing about carbs, coils, distributors until 4 yrs ago, and I’m still learning but I have a good grasp on it and I’m in my 30s. The kid is still young and being a teenager. They don’t look like they’re listening but they are. He also might just be self conscious about being on camera. Keep up the good work. Both of you are doing great

When you get the car jacked up grab a lone screw driver or a long extension start the car and hold against the block and oil pan with putting your ear to the end of the screw driver or extension and you will definitely pin point the noise coming from the engine, I'm still sticking with a rod bearing or main bearing on the crank... I'm as excited as you guys are to find out what's the culprit to the mystery noise........
