It has the greatest amount of dislikes since it was that ERA that fanwars was rampant and this song winning the MAMA song of the year certainly did not help reduce the amounts of dislikes. It's definitely a bop tho!!!
They already found themselves since the beginning. Cutesy and bubbly are the trademarks that TWICE chose to take and became very iconic amongst the K-Pop groups because of their commitment to it. They just become different and can be different concept every next era. Signal in particular sounds different than the type of cutesiness that the TWICE has.
It is actually a myth that many people do not like Signal. When it first came out, some people were not used to it and think that it is not Twice 'sound', even the members were a bit apprehensive at first, but the song grows on most people. Twice like it soon after, but some Onces still think that Twice do not like this song until now just because the members said that they were apprehensive when they got the song initially. They forgot that the members also said that JYP was right to use this song as title track as it won many music shows and SOTY for MAMA 2017. They even chose to perform it at KBS Music Festival end of last year, the only non-2020 release performed at these year end festivals. There are actually much lesser people who do not like this song than what people believed. The dislikes in the MV was due to toxic fans from another fandom (veteran Onces will know which) who openly threaten other fandoms to mass dislike, else their own faves MVs will get mass dislikes.

The song that made me Once the MV story is that they are alien and want to come back to their home so they show there super power to let him know they are like him but he thinks they love him ( the same as lyrics I send signals but you don’t understand) 😂😂😂

Before my time as a Once but I'll try. After T.T. and Knock Knock. Once's wanted to see Twice grow up a bit, but JYP was kind of holding there evolution back. The members themselves are not fond of this song and Nayeon speaks openly about her disdain for it. The choreography was also done by JYP himself and the members didn't think it was very 'Twice'. Remember T.T. and Knock knock tell as story so watching knock knock before T.T. might screw you up. So you might want to do TT before Knock Knock. Or give us fans a treat and do both!
Twice were only apprehensive when they first got the songs, cos it is different from what the used to perform. They also said that JYP was right to give them this as it got so many awards. Remember also that they chose to perform Signal, out of some many earlier tracks, in the KBS Music Festival 2020. You will not perform it if you are not fond of it.

Like what you mentioned, Twice (and some listeners) were not used to the beat of the song, so either do not like it or apprehensive at first. People only remembered that initial reaction, but forgot about how many had said that the song grew on them and that they liked it after several listens.
Initially I couldn’t stand this song, but it eventually grew on me after it kept popping up in my Spotify feed. Now I love it because it’s so drastically different.
This song and “what’s love” is like a fresh air in twice songs. Bother had fair lines description. Sana and Tzuyu singing in the chorus, Mina and Momo in the intro is so cool, everyone has a verse and both won Song of the Year.
The reason why people don’t like it cause it was different and to many people who aren’t fans of the group it sounded weird. The fact that it won song of the year added more fuel to the fire and more people from other fandoms started to dislike it and causes a lot of fan wars.
