Quick note: Midna IS the Triforce of Wisdom holder. That’s what saves her. That’s why Zelda disappears right after giving it to her. That’s why Midna isn’t hurt by Light and why she can chill on Link’s back in the regular world. Zelda’s “sacrifice” was her giving up the only thing protecting her up to that point. There’s actually a scene where Midna flinches from light because she’s not used to not being hurt by light. Midna states right after Zelda’s sacrifice: “you’ve given me all that you have, though I did not want it.” Thought it’d be cool for everyone to know :)

@Dorraj
@Dorraj 4 года назад
yeah I love this guy's thoroughness but he is way too harsh on linearity. There's nothing wrong with linear gameplay, in fact non-linear gameplay has been overdone so much nowadays, that super linear is almost preferred.
@somni2246
@somni2246 4 года назад
@@Dorraj yea, while I do really love open-worlds and enjoy exploration, those things can only keep me engaged for so long. For instance, I really enjoyed BOTW up until I found all of the towers, and thus pretty much knew what every area had to offer, before the game started to become kind of boring and repetitive for me; there just wasn't enough interesting story or characters to keep me engaged. What really draws me into a game is the narrative, and feeling fully immersed in that narrative. The ideal game for me is one that blends a beautifully crafted open- world, that feels alive and realistic, with complex characters and stories that exist in that world. For this reason The Witcher 3 is the best open-world adventure I've ever played; it has a wonderfully crafted linear narrative that also allows for some exploration and player choice, and has complex characters that you feel connected to. In the Witcher, the tightly constructed narrative improves the feeling of it's world rather than detracting from it. It really has the best balance of immersion, exploration and story, in my opinion. My other three favorite games, KOTOR 2, VTMB and Fallout:New Vegas, all have this blend of immersive atmosphere and interesting story and characters, though only the latter employs a more non-linear story. I'm also a massive fan of the Bioshock series which, again, have very linear narratives yet also have some of the most engrossing environments/atmospheres.
@Dorraj
@Dorraj 4 года назад
@@somni2246 mhm, I think an open world/narrative is only good when the quality of the narrative is high everywhere. There is no point in making an open world game if most of everything in that world is dry and bland. I'd MUCH rather have a hyper linear story than an extremely bland open world.
@garethhorell7074

I like these videos, but my biggest criticism is that he seems to have a view of what makes a good Zelda dungeon that is very different from mine. For me, a good dungeon is one with interesting puzzles that make use of a novel mechanic that is implemented well. Backtracking in a dungeon can be good if I’m backtracking after I’ve gained a new ability and am looking for places to use it Backtracking sucks when it means desperately looking around previously explored rooms looking for something I was also able to do but missed because it was hidden in an obtuse way. It’s fine to be stuck in a room because you haven’t figured out the puzzle yet, it sucks to be stuck and not even have any idea which room you need to go to. Apparently this guy LOVES that though.
@nathanielsmith1905
@nathanielsmith1905 4 года назад
Dorraj I agree but I’ve found that often when Zelda dungeons go for the more linear approach, namely those in wind waker, they drop the ball on making linearity interesting. Instead of ramping up the challenge and relative complexity of the rooms as they go, it pretty much feels like you’re just walking unobstructed from one simple and easy room to the next. That’s why the added challenge of finding the path makes it more fun in these cases. Linearity also forces the developers to put emphasis on continually developing certain themes for their puzzles, whereas with dungeons that are a bit less linear they are able to get away with doing something else instead. For example in Jabu Jabu’s belly in Ocarina of Time, instead of trying to make boomerang puzzles/combat scenarios that gradually increase in complexity, they focused more on testing the player’s spacial awareness and getting them to understand how different parts of the dungeon fit together.

That is the reason why I never told anybody why Majora's Mask 3D is my favorite Zelda game. I got it during its release year in 2015 on my 13th birthday and loved it from that day on! This was also the first game where a cutscene showed what my character looks like currently. For me the most frustrating shortcoming of Twilight Princess was actually the difficulty curve: The game NEVER gets harder than it is at the beginning, but it feeds you so many hearts that it is absolutely trivial by the end. Almost nothing does more than a quarter heart of damage. Ganon's pig form running you over costs 1/4 heart! 1/4 heart from getting trampled by a giant demonic pig! Same when the dragon knocked you to the ground! 1/4 heart for falling ten stories??? It crushed my sense of achievement, because I felt like I hadn't actually achieved anything when I killed any of the bosses, especially the final fight with Ganandorf. They all posed no threat, and obviously involved the dungeon item in some way. I agree with you that the more common criticisms of TP are totally over-blown. There was a ton of content in the "empty" hyrule field, and the intro is effective at setting up the story and not extremely long unless you are re-playing the game. Wolf link is very fun to play as despite being a bit under-developed, and those sections in the twilight world are just so cool I never noticed the number of tears of light.

Sorry to go all necromancer on your comment, but 100% agreed. I remembered playing through TPHD on Hero Mode with Ganondorf's amiibo to make it more difficult... And I don't think I died more than once or twice throughout the entire game? It was easy to the point where it severely undermined the "epic" feeling they were going for. Granted, the 3D Zelda games have never been particularly well-known for their difficulty, but TP is the only game where it was so prevalent that it bothered me.

I think one of the biggest, and under-recognized strengths, is the characters. Midna is kind of a douche at first, but slowly gains your respect as you work together and help each other out. The villagers and townspeople (the mayor, Telma, that one village girl who gives you Epona's charm) feel normal at first- but as you help save the world, they do anything and everything they can to help you. Honestly, just like Mr.Bierbaron said, all but Midna aren't worth considering. So much talking, screen time, and such with them (which is very little to begin with), yet they don't do much or anything to make most people care about them. Such as this video talking about Collin's development to save one of the other kids is different from people to people, mostly because time spent with Collin personally, is little to none at all. So to other people, that moment with him is very rushed, and possibly undeserved. Just like how KingK says Princess Zelda being there at the end with Link for the final battles, and having the Triforce of Wisdom is undeserved, due to the lack of characterization and screen time of her (even though the same applies to Ganondorf, despite what he says). It really all comes down to how very little screen time every character gets in this game, and how they aren't much different than the way they were from the start. All very much unlike Midna, when it comes to the character department. The talking to the animals? Hoo boy, yeah, no. Another downside when it comes to the Wolf Link mechanics, which makes it look even worser than before, of just how much of a underutilized gimmick it is. At this point, I would rather take the use of sailing in the boat of Wind Waker over it, even during the original where you had the terrible Triforce fetch quest on top of it. Also there's not much of a uniqueness about them at all, that warrants acknowledgement of the mechanic's existence.

well you can agree or disagree, but a LOT of people like Zelda games for the exploration aspect. Linearity completely removes that. Past decade or so has seen a huge rise in demand for open world “fuck it do whatever you want” games. And ironically now everyone is hating them. It’s just constant shifting demand in genres. Happens all the time. Remember when Battle Royales were fucking EVERYWHERE? Now you ONLY hear about what Apex fortnite and CoD? Trends come and go. Open world games were hella trendy this past decade, and I believe a bit longer than that. And as we all know, shifting trends equals trashing previous trends. Once everyone started demanding open world games, regardless of the quality of them (cough far cry assassins creed shadow of mordor cough cough), the very same people started hating on the past linear games. It’s not the games fault for being developed around a certain point in time, and with certain trends and expectations. People were hating linear story-driven games because “but my freedom and exploration and grindy progression!!!” (Not saying anything’s wrong with that. Like seriously that’s what open worlds games are. Not bad, just their own genre).

@@game-enjoyer13 Well the whole thing about open world games is that is a constant hit or miss. You can make a gorgeous world but if there's NOTHING to do, its the reason why I would prefer having linearity instead since it wouldnt hurt as much and I believe would help the team make more actual content. Look at PSO2NGS for this very example At the other side of the spectrum, you have BOTW where it has a massive open world with actual stuff and many things at play for you to explore and play around in. Which is the reason people "want" open world environments but its tremendously hard to pull off a good open world game

One thing I feel like you neglected to mention, that adds to the quality of the story, is how Link's initial goal upon setting out isn't to save Hyrule, but to save the kidnapped kids. Upon finding the kids and returning Kakariko back from the Twilight, that goal is taken care of since he knows that they are safe, but his debt to Midna remains and becomes the new focus. Even if you played the original game now and had the right tools you could use the Tuner. With HD he gives you the Tingle Bottle instead which was of course used with Miiverse. But without Miiverse the bottle becomes nothing more then a worthless item that sits in your inventory gathering dust throughout the entire game. Nintendo didn't need to get rid of Miiverse even and if they did they could have just replaced it with something different yet still worked. But nope. Drop the whole thing. So stamps in 3-D World? Only there for completion now. Stamps in Twilight Princess for the Wii-U? Useless. Tingle Bottle in Wind Waker for the Wii-U? Also useless. It's like the Wii-U equal of the termination of wi-fi for the original Wii. Mario Kart Wii suffered from a massive loss of content due to this. Did you know Mario Kart Wii had bosses? Well if you just found this out now guess what? You can't fight these bosses because they were exclusive to online wi-fi matches.

This is the greatest 3d zelda of all time and, in my opinion, the greatest video game ever made. I think its similarities to OOT actually make it a million times better than OOT for that reason. Its familiar and so much darker, almost like it was made for players who grew up with oot. The dungeons are punishing yet forgiving, the games story is deep and has so many ties to OOT lore-wise. Most of all though, and the thing that seperates it from Botw in my opinion, is the replay value of this game. Its like watching a good movie. a game like botw is so personal that its replay value is almost completely non existant due to the game being so tied to the decisions YOU make. No matter what you do in BOTW, it will never ever be like the first time you played it and it will always just make you wish you could go back. Ive played twp at least one a year since it came out and it never, ever gets old no matter how many times i get to those end credits. Its a masterpiece, just like every other zelda game, but just a little bit more special. The best part about it is the final boss. A fucking four stage raw, epic fucking final boss that truly shows you the power of ganon and ends with a 1v1 swordfight with ganon in his gerudo form, which is something that had never been seen in any other zelda. No help from the outside, not ganon in some kind of beastly form with otherwordly powers, just you and him and your blades. Its unmatched imo.

I disagree. It’s nowhere near as dark as OOT. I feel like you misunderstood the portrayal and execution of the story in OOT. Let me give you an example: you become an adult in OOT, realizing that the world is a lot darker and harsher than you thought it was as a child. You go back in time to hopefully gain back your childhood/naive way of thinking. You head down the well in the farm, and then you see weird creatures and satanic writings deep underground, and then you encounter one of the most iconic bosses in the game. A white blood that looks something out of an SCP creepy pasta. There’s weird arms dangling out of the floor, and a jawless creature. The nail in the coffin is that you encounter all this as a child, a child that went back in time to hopefully relive his naive and limited view of the world; shielded from the darkness that you encounter as an adult. Despite these efforts, the darkness is unavoidable. You can’t go back to who you were; you can’t be just a child anymore since the lingering knowledge of the dark world tucked away is still in the brain the moment you stepped outside the temple of time as an adult. THIS is how you write a dark story. THIS is how you show the journey a character goes through using masterful environmental storytelling with 0 dialogue or cutscenes. That is not present in twilight princess. The “dark” aspects of the game are mostly shown through cutscenes and whatnot, and as result the flow of the game’s delve into the dark atmosphere of the world feels a lot less real and satisfying than ocarina of time. It doesn’t feel like “art” but rather a “movie”. All this isn’t even to mention majoras mask, which is not only the best Zelda game but one of the greatest games of all time due to it doing the exact same type of implementation of a dark atmosphere in OOT, but somehow EVEN better with a much darker and depressing setting that leads to probably the greatest atmosphere in any game ever. Once again, having the lingering knowledge of knowing that the world is on the brink of getting wiped out is multitudes more impactful and depressing than even OOT time, because despite by e dark world of hyrule, there’s still a bigger presence of hope. The world isn’t on a “time limit” like majora, and the characters aren’t nearly as fleshed out as majora due to the side quests being worse; the side quests in majora are by far the best in any Zelda game. They truly represent the people within the games as actual beings with emotions and goals far more than any other Zelda game manages to do. Saying goodbye to Romania he her sister in the final day as they say “we’ll meet again tommorow..right?” As they know damn well that they will die after we got to know about their characters through the brilliant side quest is more dark and depressing than ANYTHING in twilight princess. The cherry on top is that it’s done through pure gameplay, with very few dialogue that is used effectively, such as the sister telling link that they will meet again tommorow, when it’s the final day before the world ends. Twilight princess is great, it utilizes aspects of ocarina and died then better in some ways, but the artistic side is definitely not one of them. It falls short in atmosphere, music, story, and art style when compared to majoras mask and OOT due to its lack of “show not tell” and impact of its environment to the overall feel of the story; both of which are done far better in OOT and majoras mask. It’s also not the the best game. All 3 of these games are a masterpiece, but twilight princess is 3rd because the artistic side of Zelda is what makes it truly stand out, not necessarily the combat and cutscenes and graphics and whatnot.
@jaswanthvardireddy2243
@jaswanthvardireddy2243 7 месяцев назад
Also fighting ganon in his gerudo form is just as jarring as fighting his beastly form in OOT. That 2nd phase is iconic and etched as one of the best final boss moments in Zelda because it perfectly represents the themes of the game. The first phase is straightforward and ganon looks and feels “formal”, just like young link, but then he transforms into this beastly and wretched creature that is indescribable with words. The atmosphere and lighting suddenly gets a lot more darker. Link and Zelda are visibly surprised as to just how horrifying ganon looks. It’s the same feeling you get when you first walk out of the temple of time after aging 7 years into the future. The vista of this wretched atmosphere is unparalleled, it’s so jarring to the point where the whiplash is still something special to this day. No Zelda game managed to provide such a huge contrast in its environments and gameplay than OOT to such a high and masterful degree. It’s to date the best ganon fight because, while ganon DOES get a powerup that makes him change forms to this beastly looking creature (a common troupe in games), it fits perfectly into the thematic importance of the game and the contrasts within it between formality and straightforwardness to indescribable darkness. Sure twilight princess had a great final encounter that was “unique”, but being “unique” doesn’t necessarily indicate it’s superior quality over something else that may have been less original but executed just as well, or even better, to which OOT’s ganon fight falls into this category.

On the Agatha quest, I don't mind being gifted rupees because when my purse is full, I just go give them all to the guy who asks for charity. When you empty your purse on him, go fill it up again at Agatha's. You pretty much covered every reason Twilight Princess is my favorite Zelda game. One thing worth noting that I don't think you mentioned is how returning items have been changed to make them feel fresh. You touched on this with the iron boots and how they were used to magnetize Link to walls ans ceilings, and how they were used in the sky temple to hold link in place and activate hanging switches. I really like how they took the boomerang and added wind to it to add a cool twist and allow for some new puzzles. Same goes for the bombs and their ability to combine with arrows, the clawshot's new ability to hang from ceilings and raise and lower, and of course being able to use two later on. In Twilight Princess It didn't feel like the same old song and dance when you got items that have become staples because they though up cool and unique ways to change them and add new utility to them.

While I love all Zelda games, TP is the first and only game where I became emotionally attached on a fundamental level with any character, that being Midna. Her helpfulness, her design *cough*, her sass, her constant companionship, and the frantic and emotional moment where you need to save her all create a perfect and moving relationship arc. Midna is what made TP as amazing as it is, and without her, I would not be as passionate about TP as I am.
