Twilight Princess: The "Zelda" Formula At Its Most Polished (And The Little Things I Love About It)

The Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess stands as my favorite installment in the franchise, as well as my favorite game of all time. There's no shortage of videos talking about this game but most of them neglect to mention the reasons I love it so much, hence why I wanted to get this video made.
This video has been in the works for some time now, being conceptualized several years ago. I tried as hard as I could to get it out before Tears of The Kingdom released but I failed miserably and got wrapped up in playing that game. So I may make some remarks that come off as weird with Tears now being out for over a month now.
I also experimented with different mic setups in order to get "louder" takes for comedic effect, as I live in an apartment and don't want to disturb my neighbors. Let me know if it actually works or not :D

Your point about why Zelda companions should be involved in the combat is a huge reason why Midna and Zelda in Spirit Tracks are my two favorite companions in the series. Makes the final boss fights all the more epic, especially Midna throwing Ganon like Link herding goats at the beginning of the game and Link and Zelda needing to drive the Lokomo Sword into Malladus’s head together

The water temple was the perfect difficulty for a Zelda dungeon to me in my experience. I got stuck in for waay longer than I thought I would. I couldn't wrap my head around where water may have been sourced, how to get there and where to let it flow. It was a great test of your ability to analyze and mentally visualize your surroundings. Those are probably the most important qualities of a classic Zelda dungeon imo, and its great that even one dungeon found a perfect balance between a glorified straight line and a convoluted and esoteric mess that only a scholar of Zelda lore could solve.

God only knows how many times ive just waited at the start screen as the fairy fountain theme plays. This is absolutely my favorite game of all time. I am currently playing through it again and it is even better than I thought. Playing again with a mature state of mind lets me appreciate all the small things. I went through this game after ocarina of time when I was young and I couldn’t have been happier with how they referenced it. Also in no other zelda game have I experienced as in-depth combat I mean learning new skills from past link is just so rewarding.

Great video. TP wasn't my first Zelda game, but it's my all-time favourite. I'm currently on a TP-praise-video binge and yours is definitely one of the best out there, easily in my top 5. I've also read the manga, I enjoyed it a lot. Haven't read manga in a long time but this tempted me to go back and I didn't regret it. I so loved how the story was flashed out in the manga. And the artwork and style was also very good. I've also played the Gamecube version. Once when it was released and a few years later on the Wii but with a Gamecube memory stick. Worked like a charm back then. Still a shame that it wasn't released for Switch yet.

TP is not really an Ocarina rehash. Being sort of a sequel it makes sense it shares similarities, also it polished most of the features introduced in OoT and expanded the gameplay. Sure, it has it downsides and some details feel rushed (Illia not being well implemented into the story for example) yet it's such an amazing experience when you play it with an open mind and appreciate it for what it is. I also like how this Link is more mature and down to earth. Other incarnations just seem to accept they're the chosen ones and get the Master Sword because let's beat the evil guy. But this time his motivation is to save his friends, then saving Midna because she became someone dear to him, and then save Hyrule so his whole world doesn't go down. I see him having a genuine struggle and caring for other characters here. Maybe I enjoyed this one too much because I don't have nostalgia glasses for Ocarina of Time. It wasn't my first Zelda game and A Link to the Past was my #1 up to that point. I see TP with the same eyes I see TotK, it's not the groundbreaking Zelda of its generation, but it took everything its prequel did right and improved it.

The Zelda series was my first exposure to video games as a kid. It's what led me to my love of video games as a whole. Even now, almost 20 years later at this point, Video Games are my biggest passion. I love learning about everything that makes a game what it is. When I was a kid, we were a Nintendo house, and my dad would be playing Zelda when he wasn't away for work. I was so enamored with Zelda Ocarina of Time and then again with Twilight Princess watching my dad play it. To this day, I still have a massive soft spot for these games, and it's always the music and cutscenes that bring me back to those times as a child. The title screen from Ocarina of Time where the game's logo fades into view, the Twilight Princess intro, even the file select screens with their fairy fountain music all invoke a huge amount of nostalgia. I have a deep-found respect for the people who developed these games. Sometimes I like to imagine what the developers felt after finishing a game like Twilight Princess. Although the player feels a profound sense of satisfaction upon completing the game and seeing the credits roll, I imagine that sense being all the more true for the people working on the game. I like to imagine a theoretical scenario where it's getting close to finishing a game such as this, and it's almost ready for release. The story has been finalized and the gameplay is 90% polished. The marketing team is hard at work making trailers for the game that you poured your heart and soul into. And then you see the credits for the game for the first time. Although the music serves as a climax for the player, it also serves as a climax for the developers, and being able to finally see your name on a piece of work that you love and being shipped to people to spread that passion, I can only imagine the emotional payoff. This is what I love about video game design and video game development. To me, no other entertainment medium is quite as satisfying or as intimate as video games. Thank you for making this video.

My appreciation for Twilight Princess has grown a lot since it first came out. My 1st Zelda game was Ocarina, 2nd was Wind Waker, and TP was my 3rd. Those first 2 games made me a lifelong Zelda fan practically overnight and so naturally, I got TP for the Wii on launch day. I liked it but I was a bit underwhelmed overall, and to this day I'm not sure why. Perhaps I found its eerie atmosphere off-putting compared to what I had played before, or maybe the story was too overwhelming for my 14 year old ADHD brain. TP definitely has a denser plot with a lot more supporting characters than previous games. But whatever the reasons were, with each subsequent playthrough I realized more and more how great it is. OOT and WW will always be my 2 favorite Zelda games but TP ranks very high too. It's one of the best games of that era.

One of my favorite and more overlooked aspects of this game is the Cowboy western influence. Link’s design combines a bit of medieval knight and cowboy elements and the way he flips his sword is akin to a gunslinger spinning their revolver. The farm hand origins of this Link and greater emphasis on Epona plus the obvious direct references to old western movies in both current and old Kakariko really give the game a cool unique identity along with all the twilight stuff.

I was an elementary school student when I played this game the last time. So this breakdown helps me understand the game in a way I didn't at the time. I 100% agree with the music(I was a kid and I still remember how good it was) and as you say in the title, your video kinda made me miss the "old" Zelda formula. As much as I enjoyed TOTK and BOT, I somehow wish Nintendo would bring this type of Zelda back. Oh man I now remembered when I defeated the ganon the first time, I loved the soundless victory with the Ganon just standing dead, I was like , "is head dead? Did I do it?"

Thank you for voicing exactly how I feel about this wonderful game!! Like you said, its hard to hear others go on about TP as if its some sub par Zelda game because "its to dark" or "the visuals are dated" or some other overbloted petty gripe that in the long run doesn't actually negatively effect the game. To this day I think TP is still the coolest/stylish looking Zelda with the best combat, story, and gameplay, and I will die on that hill. TP was my first Zelda game and I get that I might be looking at it with rose tinted glasses, but even after replaying other Zelda games nothing quite hits like Twilight Princess does. Its is both a sin and a crime the the HD version is so underwhelming and stuck on the Wii U. TP deserves so much more praise than its colorful counterparts and the fact than Nintendo still cant let go of TP links design is rather telling. Thank you for making this vid dude, its such a boots being reminded of how much I love my favorite Zelda game and that I'm not the only one who deeply loves it.

TP Is basically a more expansive reinvisioning of what OOT did and it is one of those sequels that actually did something good with being bigger(too often bigger is automatically taken as better and the actual content quality falls through the cracks). One of the things I have always struggled with in the past is the average dungeon size tho, I just don't handle these massive things too well, which is also why I often have issues with Alttp's final dungeon.
@RenSako
@RenSako Месяц назад
But this game is specifically too big with nothing to do in those spaces. This game was too big WITHOUT being better. The dungeon design was fine, everything else took a hit though. Exploration is worse and less rewarding than Ocarina. The problem with this game is it was ultimately pressured into being nostalgia bait. The soul of Twilight Princess was harmed by everyone demanding them retread Ocarina instead of leaning into its new ideas. I mean, this video is implies the formula at its most polished, whereas at the time the agreement was pretty soundly that the formula was stretched so thin that the fun was diluted to minuscule levels. It ran the formula into the ground so hard that they abandoned it going forward from there, even though it was arguably the most popular Zelda game for years after, and kind of still is, except now everyone is saying it’s “underrated” when in reality, it’s pretty fairly rated. The formula was tired, and the plot and soul of the game was damaged by the sudden forced focus on trying to recapture the magic of Ocarina instead of build its own identity. It is not a bad game, but it’s not underrated at all. Arguably the opposite, if anything: I could likely find 5, maybe more, videos in a minute saying how underrated it is, and complaining because it’s not the poster child of the series even though it was for like, a decade straight, even after Skyward Sword came out. Hell, personally, I think the fact that it’s 3D Zelda at its borderline worst and is still better than 98% of games on the market is pretty impressive, but the fact it’s so hollow and empty compared to the rest of the series in favor of railroaded plot that actually incentivizes NOT exploring by running you through the same empty world over and over again to the point you just fast travel because there isn’t a actually anything to experience in game besides the dungeons is kind of wild for Zelda.
@lpfan4491
@lpfan4491 Месяц назад
@@RenSako I mean...lol? I remember having infinitely more to explore and do in the most hated area(TP Hyrule Field) than in the average OOT area(Especially OOT Hyrule field). There's also highlights like that weird cave at the lake that feels like it goes on forever, in a positive way. The game also makes much better use of features like fasttravel(The one in OOT genuinely sucks. You get a song for each dungeon and use them like 3 times total, one time is mandatory. And it is not because the world is designed where you wouldn't want fasttravels, they are just in inconvenient spots, obtained too late and pointless for quests that demand you go across the world.) OOT is a fine game and I have my issues with TP that make me rather replay it, but the idea that everything it does is a worse OOT feels forced. Kinda like how MM is a worse OOT according to people because of the time limit...that is barely a limitor in practice.

Props to you for noticing the advantageous leitmotif. The music alone in this game made it my favorite. The way the themes get recycled and reharmonized depending on the context is superb. The music that plays when you meet Zelda for the first time blends the first few notes of the hyrule castle theme with the first few notes of midnas theme. The music that plays after midna gets blasted by the light spirit and you're taking her to Zelda as wolf link blends midnas theme with the main hyrule field theme (although the notes have been stretched across more measures). This stuff would make Richard Wagner proud.

@RenSako
@RenSako Месяц назад
Fine gameplay, great music, pointless characters that drag the game out, art style that didn’t even work at release and has aged like milk, and, admittedly, amazing dungeons. TP is what happens when fan service is the focus of the experience and the team feels forced to pander to people obsessed with Ocarina of Time and forget to fully flesh out the game as a result. I love knowing there’s no point in exploring anything because what little interesting stuff there is to explore will only reward you with rupees you can’t hold and don’t need! I love being railroaded between story events just to not even mind because there’s nothing else to do in the game besides yeti snowboarding! I love pacing destroying forced Twilight sections that grind the game to a halt and add nothing to the experience! I love everyone looking like a clown without makeup! I love the ugly, muddy textures that replaced the original art style because “hurr durr anything except hyper realism bad”! There’s a reason the series fundamentally changed after Twilight Princess: it was tired, and they didn’t want to make another LttP clone, but felt pressured into doing so because Ocarina was super popular at the time, especially post-Wind Waker. Twilight Princess is not a bad game, but the constant overhyping of it is absolutely grating. The internet is flooded with “Twilight Princess is underrated” or “Twilight Princess is the greatest Zelda” videos and threads, almost always made by people who have, self admittedly, only played maybe one other game in the series. It’s just baffling to me that, somehow, it’s become trendy to say the most popular and overhyped game in the series is somehow “underrated”. Feels to me like the people who like the game simply WANT it to be underrated despite “I’ve only played Twilight Princess and it’s the greatest game of all time” basically being a meme at this point. It’s not even the greatest in the series. I still love the game, but that’s in spite of its flaws. It’s a good memory for me, but every time I sit down to replay it, those memories go a bit grey because it just.. isn’t that fun.

One of my favorite things about Zant is how he comes off as cold, intelligent, and tactful, but when you finally square off against him you realize he really isn't all that (and my head canon is that he knew he couldn't beat Link and low-key just ducks you the whole game lmao) and how he just kinda goes off the deep end during his fight and is just desperately swinging around and trying to throw you off by using other bosses as framework for most of his fight instead of using his own lackluster style until the end of the fight and even when he finally fights you genuinely with his own style instead of just mimicking other bosses he also comes off as less skilled and moreso only effective when he's able to throw off his opponent and as long as you yourself are slow and careful during the boss fight you'll be able to stomp him out

the thing i liked about twilight princess is the dungeons actually feel dangerous, like in wind waker, they have you walking on bridges over lava, in twilight princess, you have to hop scotch it. on top of that i do like the fact that they add old mining equipment that you utilize to get around and things of that sort, its damn near perfect.

I have so many thoughts after watching this video. First of all, I am so happy that you seem to appreciate leitmotifs just as much as I do. I completely agreed that the music and leitmotifs truly add to the experience of the game. It makes it memorable and makes it feel like there was love put into the game. Very underrated in media in general. I like that you went into so much detail about some of these music things, and many other aspects, and also going out of your way to see optional dialogue, etc. When I replay a game these days, that’s how I plan to play, so that way I feel like I fully experienced the game for all of what it has to offer. Talking to all the characters and such. There’s another detail I was hoping you were going to mention, and that’s in Zant’s battle. Every time the environment changes/next phase of the battle, it’s the same sound effect as when you first enter twilight, and also the twilight areas afterwards. Or if you save the game in the twilight, and then reload. Another thing is that I’m glad I’m finally easily able to play these games with headphones. I feel like it’s way easier to hear these details and the music itself and gives a more immersive experience. On the flipside, as an adult, it feels like it’s hard to find time to play a game. I try my best and try not to get distracted just watching random RU-vid videos that aren’t even that interesting (like shorts). In conclusion, it always felt like I was the only one that appreciated some of these details. Then again, I don’t really know many people. But I’m just talking about people on RU-vid that talk about games and have a long video format like this. I also really like the humor that you spread throughout the video. You’ve made me feel like I’m not alone in appreciating video game design, and the little Easter eggs or references that they have

The advantageous theme is epic, but it's really just the loz main theme with each note doubled, I think. However, this game DOES have a theme/motif that's just for Link, and I love how much we hear it. It's the other half of Midna's Lament, it's in Courage and a lot of other themes, and it plays after you pull the Master Sword. I love Link’s motif! I wish we could hear it again in another title.
@RenSako
@RenSako Месяц назад
@@Iffondrel”main theme with each note doubled” But the notes in the advantageous theme aren’t doubled and make a full, repeated arpeggio. There aren’t doubled notes, and even if they were, it really doesn’t resemble the main theme, like.. at all. I agree it’s not Link’s theme, but the main theme thing absolutely baffles me. I mean, it generally resembles the main theme like all Hyrule Field renditions do, and is likely build off it, but it’s its own beast.

Man you couldnt have better explained in a full video what I felt for twilight. And this is coming from someone who grew up to have ocarina of time and majora's mask on N64 be their first zelda experiences. I also loved windwaker as a kid. But twilight his me the hardest. Which also made me sad that the only thing they did for the HD remaster was to give it a texture uplift rather than also adding better lighting and shaders like they did windwaker. The hero mode with the world mirrored intentionally for the hero mode was fun tho! It sorta gave it a fresh feeling to me as one who played it originally on the gamecube. And depending on potions felt like a proper RPG, not having free hearts everywhere. And the game was stil fun to complete even then.

i think the biggest critism i can give to this gave that likely lead to its controversy. that is that the game is actually quite hard for younger poeple and anyone who hasnt played it before. I say hard because on first playthrough it can be quite challenging to know what to do. i remember i got stuck in the water temple as a kid for month (i wasnt playing everyday) and the probelm was a room that required you to break down stalagtites, which you do earlier in the dungeon but i had forgotten. now that im older i find that the game is one of the best and i look forward to playing it all the time.

Thanks for spending so much time talking about the music and for mentioning all kinds of tiny comments I had in my head after you'd bring certain things up. Like the E3 crowd reaction or just how satisfying certain moments are. I've always loved the music in TP, it's stood as the strongest OST from the N64/GC era in my head and I didn't really know why, but it's the nostalgic throwbacks in the motifs and I never thought about it. Also, I never knew that the advantageous motif was used in so many places, that's rad! Jerma vs Armogohma was funny too.

Twilight Princess on the Wii was the first Zelda game I played, and the last one my dad played. I fell in love with it. The control style with Wii Remote + Nunchuck feels right to me. That could be simply because it was the way I experienced it first. The mirrored world also feels better to me, and is probably why the HD version on Wii U doesn't sit right imo. Surprisingly, there are no Wii U code injections to make Twilight Princess HD use the mirrored world in normal mode. While it was still a new thing, my mom and dad played it as well. I think my mom got through the first dungeon, but my dad didn't get that far before he stopped. Long after I beat the game, I knew it was a grand adventure. Then later came along Wind Waker HD and BOTW Wii U. Both wonderful in their own right, but Twilight Princess on the Wii remains top. Back in 2016, my dad passed from dementia. I considered selling the Wii U since I had nothing on it, until I realized I couldn't do that. My dad's old save file for the game was still in memory. To me, erasing that would be like erasing memory of him. Eventually, I jailbroke the Wii U and one of the first things I did once I got the vWii hacked into was back up everything on the machine to an SD card. I promptly put all of it into Google Drive, where I won't lose it. I swear there were also Mario Kart Wii replays with his name on them, but apparently not. But that's not the point. For this reason and my own, Twilight Princess holds a strong place in my heart. I seriously hope Nintendo listens to the demands of the consumers and creates a collection of the 3D Zelda games for Switch, similar to 3D All-Stars. Ocarina, Majora, Wind Waker, and Twilight Princess all in one collection. If it came to fruition, I hope there's an option to use the original world orientation or the mirrored one, without the need of playing on hard mode. Twilight Princess is a masterpiece, and deserves to be remade for Switch.

Some people see TP as a rehash of OoT, but for me, it's closer to "Twilight Princess is to Ocarina as Ocarina is to LTTP." Yeah sure, it plays out in a similar way, but it's got a far more involved story, a more entertaining companion, fancier dungeons, bigger bosses, cooler items with more features, and "interludes" that feel like epic setpiece moments instead of uneventful diversions. ...Well, for the most part anyway. I mean in OoT, you walk to a nearby cave, pick up some blue fire in a bottle, thaw out a single Zora, and later hear that "don't worry bro the other ones'll like... thaw out later." In Twilight Princess, you trek back to death mountain, teleport a giant pillar of freshly erupted lava rock through a sky portal, drop it in, and watch an entire frozen river roar back to life and cascade down the cliff. That's what the identity of this game is to me. Zelda Plus Ultra.

It honestly seems like Zelda Twilight Princess was the last game that allowed the player to achieve heroic feats in many ways through generosity, helpfulness, saving the helpless, and vanquishing evil. There is also a lot of esoteric knowledge in the game with the mirror, the twilight realm, and the divine beast prophecy. The mirror points toward the obsidian mirror. The twilight realm points towards a dark realm from many cultures. The divine beast prophecy points toward the white tiger prophecy in which the dark realm feared the white tiger because the tiger meant wrathful righteousness and heroism. There are so many hidden details and secrets in Zelda Twilight Princess that it is simply amazing.

I love the points you made in the video, especially in regards to the "little things" like Link’s sword sheathing animation. I’m just gonna gush about TP Link for a sec- Through his interactions with different characters in the game, we get a pretty damn good understanding of his personality. He’s clearly responsible and someone the other Ordon occupants rely on for rather mundane tasks. We also see just how patient and kind he can be when he’s spending time with the children. But, he gets yelled at by Ilia for being a bit insensitive, which is kinda true. He’s prone to recklessness in dangerous situations. When Link meets Midna for the first time, he’s obviously angry but also seems scared and like he’s trying really hard not to show it. My favorite thing is that, despite how humble Link appears, he actually likes to be a show-off! Ultimately, TP Link is very much close to adulthood which is made apparent through his almost ’older brother’ type of relationship to the kids, but since no one can do everything on their own, he still requires the help and guidance of the actual adults around him. He is arguably the most compelling Link we’ve had so far in terms of personality and relationships.

Hell yeah, I love TP. Good video. TP has the best sword combat, because it is proactive, not reactive. In Wind Waker, you can only do your special moves as a reaction when enemies attack you. Same in BOTW with parries and flurry rushes. The game dictates the flow of combat, not the player. In TP, you can do all of your moves whenever you want. You are the one in control. It makes the game so much more fun to play. Skyward Sword is, imo, the only competition, but that's like comparing apples to oranges. I haven't played TOTK.

TOTK has both Proactive and Reactive combat. This is also my favorite zelda game. I think that the combat in my humble opinion is at it's peak in this game, it feels so smooth and satisfying, Link really feels like a one man army in this game and it's one of the reasons I keep coming back to this game. I also have to say that this is definitely the raddest Link has ever been, so many points in this game are just freaking awesome, it's definitely the coolest link has ever been, (next to adult link in oot in my opinion) Another thing that people complain about is the side characters being "ugly," I've never really seen where people are coming from on this one because wacky and weird side characters are a staple of the series, I feel, you see them in almost every zelda, and I think people just find these more "ugly" simply because you get so much more detail, that you don't see as much in games with simpler graphics like oot and wind waker. but that's just my opinion. later
