Wouldn't it be neat if someone with money bought this building and renovated it to resemble the exact same look from the show. What a treat that would be for fans of this episode. Thanks Rick
@josephrochefort9989 Yeah. Sure you're correct. Have to be a person who only wanted work (short order cook, janitor, maintenance) ever so often. Maybe have a couple retiree workers.
@@markdaniel8740Yes. 395 is awesome! Those Eastern Sierras are spectacular. That Film History Museum in Lone Pine is a must. It’s unbelievable how many movies were filmed out there in the Alabama Hills. And the interesting history of that whole Owens Valley.
Especially stopping in Lone Pine for a bite to eat and watching the snow bunnies on their way from LA to Mammoth! It was one of the finer things to do on Friday evenings or Saturday mornings when stationed at China Lake with the US of N. from 1969-72!
A Twilight Zone episode that was very memorable. Talented actors, a great storyline (who doesn't love time travel?) and beautiful scenery. It was so well done and unique.
Great episode! Anyone who watched The Twilght Zone will love this episode! Seeing the cafe/gas station in this episode reminded me of trips with my family in the late 1950s and early 1960s. What great memories! These cafes were great. Good, simple food with (usually) good service and interesting decor. Depending on the location, these cafes would often display items of local history and interest. Love the gas station, too. Again, depending on the oil company and the owner, these service stations were often run by WWII vets who could literally fix anything. The set decorations inside the cafe were right out of the post-era. Classic!
Yeah, I call these Mom and Pop diners. Sadly they are fading fast being replaced by franchised, commercialized, cookie cutter restaurants. They got no soul.
Recently, I watched this episode and recognized the desert in California. I live east of Sacramento and have traveled Hwy 395 maybe 6 times in 50 years. It's really an interesting drive with the quaint town of Bishop, and the beautiful snow-covered mountains with vast desert below. 👍
P.S. Our family moved from Ohio to San Bernardino in 1957, so I too remember the diners with excellent food, shakes, pies, juke boxes, souvenirs and candy bars. Great memories traveling in our new '57 Rambler station wagon. 💜
That nostalgia is cute - useless but cute. But it's also why I get a little wobbly whenever the Randy Newman song Our Town sung by James Taylor in Cars happens. 🚗
"These service stations were often run by WWII vets who could literally fix anything." That's a VERY good observation and makes complete sense. Never thought about that.....Thanks!
In the 60/70’s we drove up the 395 for our vacations in Yosemite every year. Never noticed the building back then, but I was a kid. I recognized the area when I watched reruns of The Twilight Zone. Good video
I drive to Reno from Los Angeles 3-4 times a year and pass by this building every time. It always reminds me of the Twilight Zone episode and brings a smile to my face. Such a great show
I think it was a perfect choice for a location shoot for this episode. How cool that the cafe is still there. Love this info. And I really like your new end graphic! Very cool!
Past Schat's is US-6. It's the longest single road in the US. There is a mileage sign that says how far it is to the other end just outside of town. Take that to US-95 and find another out of this world interesting drive. Go north toward Boise. There's even a sign that says "Lobster Crossing" and it has a real story behind it.
Hollywood has been filming in the Owens Valley since the 1920s. I was born just up the road in Lone Pine and grew up in Independence and Bishop. I remember my Dad working for the Inyo County Sheriff's office, worked security for the set of "Joe Kidd" filmed up in Buttermilk west of Bishop. Lots of TV commercials where filmed in the Eastern Sierra, CHP would close the road for the latest car commercial just about every summer. You should try and find the locations at Owenyo and Keeley where they filmed "Bad Day at Blackrock". If you look at "Gunga Din" 1939 and "Iron Man" 2008 both were filmed in the Alabama Hill by Lone Pine.
So many westerns, Randolph Scott, Have Gun will Travel, etc there in the Alabama Hills. I watched an episod of HGWT filmed at Laws with Engine #9 rolling into the station there.
Thanks from sharing the location. This is one of the stand-out episodes of the Twilight Zone series. The story, cinematography, and casting are all exemplary and the story leads to an uplifting conclusion. It would be hard to ask to check more boxes for a half hour TV show. I believe this is my favorite episode.
No kidding. It blows my mind to think this show was on when Bobby Soxers and Hops and drive ins were the norm. When you think of Happy Days or American Graffiti, it's hard to imagine this was the time of the Twilight Zone.
@@EricCraig-km4sb Grant, if that is the Twilight Zone filming location we're seeing here, is only 35 miles, about a half-hour, south of the Manzanar historic site along US 395. Living in Los Angeles circa 2002 - 2008, I often drove through that area on weekend photo trips via Bishop, up through Silver Canyon's 4WD trail into the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest, or, on other weekends, from Lone Pine to Death Valley NP. Lone Pine, on highway 395 only ten miles or so south of Manzanar and 25 miles from Grant, was my usual base of operations for those trips. That Twilight Zone episode is a favorite but never realized that was the filming location.
Very interesting! If you look carefully on google earth it looks like an old airstrip just to the west of the highway. Possibly an old WWll training field. Maybe why it’s called the Airflite cafe?
I love when you're able to track down the actual filming locations and show it on Google maps/ earth. Like you did for the Green Acres begining scenes.
In high school, I had a writing class called The Twilight Zone. We would watch an entire episode, then write about it. It was so great and luckily, at the time, I was already a TZ aficionado, so it was a win win! Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. Fort Hamilton HS. 1991.
Louis was in HS on Long Island 72-76 had an English teacher who had us read Shakespeare and Arthur Miller and others in class then do a book report or our reactions. I hated Shakespeare so I asked my teacher if I could do a book Felton a book I chose. Mrs. Nelson was ok with that if it meant I’d pick up another book and read it. She said what book are we talking about? I said I want to read and do a report on Fail Safe by Eugene Burdick and Harvey Wheeler. She said that book is hardly 10 years old do you think it holds up against Shakespeare. I said it means more now than a 250 year old book does.
That building is in a variant of Art Deco known as "Streamline Moderne". It started in the early 1930s, and was popular throughout that entire decade. One of the most iconic buildings in that style was the Pan-Pacific Auditorium in LA.
I've been out that way, I have stayed in Fresno years ago and there's all sorts of lonely areas around. What doesn't make sense is this location is a fair distance from Hollywood. Normally location scouts need to keep within a defined distance from the studio. Mind you this may have been just prior to the union controls on Hollywood.
I was always wondering where this episode was shot. Having lived in Fallon, NV years ago, it reminded me of that area. Thank you for the informative information you produce on RU-vid.
Kind of reminds me of the 1990 film, "Tremors". Tremors was filmed in the same valley in Lone Pine and Darwin, CA, 25 minutes north of the Airflite Cafe location depicted in the Twilight Zone.Another interesting fact about this valley. Manzanar War Relocation Center, which was the internment camp for Japanese-Americans in World War II is 35 minutes north of this same location. If you see wartime pics of this camp, it had that same, stark look.
Been on the 395 many times. Once you get past Cartago the drive gets real pretty especially in winter. Mammoth and Lake Tahoe the goal for snowboarding 😊
Thanks Rick, this caught my eye because this episode was just on! I watch The Twilight Zone every night and I wondered where this was...very cool, appreciate your work, thanks again!
Love your work! I used to spend hours pausing old episodes of Highway Patrol and Adam 12, etc. to try to figure out the filming locations and compare them to the images in Google maps to see what they look like today. If I could identify a restaurant, I'd always try to drive by and stop in for a meal if they were still around. It looks like I'm a little late for that Cafe but I'm happy to see where it is!
Me too! Acquired a book on Highway Patrol. Shows pictures of then and now. Makes one wonder, "Where did all these people come from?" Many of the old country scenes are nothing but rooftops now. 🤧
That was great! I love that show. I still watch it today. I also love seeing/finding filming locations. I grew up in LA so I have seen ALOT of actors in The Valley.
I live in Ridgecrest, and was a Blm archaeologists for a couple years. I drove by that site a number of times, but I did not connect it to the Twilight Zone. Thanks, and this was one my favorite episodes, along with King 9 will not return.
Drove many time on the 395… that mountain range is part of the Sierra Nevada range and not far from where this episode was filmed is Mt Whitney. Many movies and TV shows were filmed in this area.
Keep going with this. I love to see old T.V. locations. How they looked then, and how they look now. Some that I've seen can be quite surprising. As this one was.
Thanks for revisiting this episode. So much to talk about. In the last video about this episode a commenter gave the latitude and longitude of this place. I can’t believe how many times I’ve drove past this place and never knew. So many great actors were in the Twilight Zone series.
How cool! Thanks for sharing - have driven by this a few times but didn't realize this was the location for those two Twilight Zone episodes. Highway 395 is so nice to drive - I think near there you could veer east to Death Valley, too -
Very cool that you posted this. I was just in this area at the beginning of August on my way to Reno from San Bernardino. I remember the episode really well. Wish I would have known this while I was driving through...I would have stopped for a picture or two.
Near Lone Pine CA, hardly a surprise, tons of television and movies were made in the area. There's a movie history museum in Lone Pine that's worth a look. For example, they have (the last time I visited) the hero "Graboid" from _Tremors._
I love this Rick. I have driven this route through Grant a few times before and it just never clicked. Next time, I’ll really keep my eyes open when passing through.
Love love the twilight zone. On holidays like new years eve Xmas I watch the twilight zone marathon. So cool. Love the old black and white episodes. The ones with William Shatner Billy mummy and the talking doll are such classics. Talking Tina. 😊
Every time I indulge myself in one of the Twilight Zone marathons they have on tv I am amazed how many of them I don’t remember. Seems like I thought I had seen them all but it’s refreshing to see one that is new to me…what a great show
Great ! Only thing , in your synopsis of rip van winkle, you mentioned that a bank was robbed. In reality, It was a gold train. Thanks for all your work. Kerry it up.
One of my favorite episodes! TY! I driven past this part of Hwy 395 & never suspected that it had been used in this episode! Thank you again! I’m a new subscriber!
I've been watching The Twilight Zone since I was a kid when it first came out. I remember this one and the other episode that you mentioned. I have seen them all, many times. Loved This post. Thank You & Best Regards.
Interesting! Excellent job on "sleuthing"! This particular show has always been one of my favorite TZ episodes and I've watched it many times over the years. WikiPedia puts the original air date at April 7, 1961, which puts me at 4-years-old... I'm 67 now. It's just unreal how a life can get behind you. THANKS for this video! I'm subscribing after watching this and the previous one about which hat Cliff Robertson should have worn.
Drove by there Monday...they have shot a bunch of TV/Movies up the 395 outside of Lone Pine in the Alabama Hills,so much so one of the access roads is Movie Flat Road.
I drive by this every year when going backpacking in the eastern Sierras. It is a beautiful drive from San Diego. Always knew that this episode was filmed near Owens Lake, but didn't know the exact location or that the building still survived. Thanks!!!
I remember that episode and as a (retired) trucker I used to drive past this location many times without even realizing it. Thanks for the interesting video.
Thanks Rick, I really enjoyed this, and looked it up on Google Earth/street view myself. And I always listen to the end of your video's to hear your signature 'Be Hopeful'. Mike in Oregon
Bridgeport, where Out of the Past was filmed is north of there. Lots of movies shot near there. And don't forget the history of the water diversion to LA.... think Muholland, Chinatown, St. Francis Dam disaster, and all that went around around Olancha. Lots of history out there.
