The portrayals of Death are from a different perspective in each. Murray Hamilton comes across as someone who has a job to do. I liked how he and Lew Bookman were evenly matched in the end. For Wanda, Robert Redford actually comes across as Mr. Life. Leonard Strong is the creepy version, to the point of smugness when Nan realizes the situation--"I believe you're going....my way!"

One For The Angels and Nothing In The Dark are my favorite episodes. Maybe I'm obsessed with death. 🤷

Murray Hamilton as Death is my #1 pick. If he were death, I’ll willingly go with him. Always loved him as an actor.

I know I keep saying this but, this is one of my all-time favorite episodes LOL! I still tend to tear up when Robert Redford's character asks: "Mother... Give me your hand..." Such awesome storytelling and emotion. 💐

This was a great idea for an episode. Would quite like to see more concept or character specific Top Lists within the Twilight Zone universe. Tough choice for my ranking though. I guess, hard pressed, I would go with Leonard Strong. But I did really dig Murray Hamilton's performance as well. That different take on death was interesting.

YESSS! Totally agree about number one. Its one of my favorites (and I think one of the episodes that actually got me into the TZ). He and Gladys Cooper play off each other so well, and I like that his (along with Murray Hamilton's, which I also like) is a portrayal of a more sympathetic and understanding Death who really "get" the people they have to retrieve. I was hoping this would be at the top, honestly. :)

Death can be anything from something as horrid as stepping on a landmine to as silly as choking on a chicken bone. It only makes sense for Death to take a form that fits the next soul in line. Though I wouldn't mind a young Robert Redford coming to collect. ;)

My favorite versions of Death are the ones who you'd mistake for an everyday guy. It makes him more of an unsettling figure. Also, you really put a lot of jump scares in this. 2:42 scared the crap out of me. Good job on this video, your editing is getting better by the minute.

Even if he wasn't the best "Mr. D" of the original "Twilight Zone", Murray Hamilton became an icon with great performances in major '60s films like "The Hustler" and "The Graduate."

I only liked the creepy episodes when I was younger, but when I got older One for the Angels became one of my favorites. And Jaws is in my top 5 favorite films. I have a robot wind-up toy on my desk right now.

I was in middle school when I watched Nothing In The Dark. I had a strong fear of death as at that time and watching that episode gave me a great deal of comfort.

Okay, here's the answer to the question regarding the similarity of "Perchance to Dream" and "Eye of the Beholder": The both open with someone's face being hidden from us. In the case of "EOTB", _everyone's_ face is obscured, either by the bandages covering the patient's head, or the doctors, nurses, and other hospital staff, whose faces are in darkness or turned away from the camera--near the end we have the unveiling of the patient as layer after layer of the bandages are taken away, and when she's shown to be normal-looking, and the doctors, etc. are shown to have distorted pig-like faces. At the start of "PTD", the protagonist, Edward Hall, enters the waiting room of a psychiatrist's office, where he is greeted by Miss Thomas, the secretary, who says, "We've been expecting you, Mr. Hall," after which he goes in to see Dr. Rathmann. What we don't observe is Miss Thomas's face, as she sits at her desk with her back turned to the camera. After Hall laid down on the proverbial couch and began relating his disturbing dreams to the doctor, we see him involved with Maya, a seductive sideshow dancer at a creepy carnival. He is simultaneously sexually drawn to her, but also terrified of her, because she puts him in exciting (roller coaster) or frightening (funhouse) situations that he fears will cause his weak heart to give out. When, Maya lures him into the nightmarish funhouse, she uses the same words he heard the same words with which the secretary greeted him at the start of the episode: "We've been expecting you, Mr. Hall." Only this time the "we" signifies many hellish images he was about to encounter. After he recounts a number of these dreams to Dr. Rathmann, he soon sits up, declaring that he didn't think the doctor could help him. As he leaves, Hall passes the secretary again, only now we see that Miss Thomas looks exactly like Maya. Hall then rushes back into the office and leaps to his death from a window many floors up which he had crashed through. We finally see the psychiatrist and his secretary standing by Hall, who had been sleeping on the couch for the whole time up until his dreamed-up suicide. Again, we that he had transferred his possible waking interest in Miss Thomas into a caricature, the dream femme fatale, Maya. You get one hell of an upvote from me. Nothing in the Dark was the episode that cured me of my fear of the Twilight Zone and gave me something true to ponder. It was damned fantastic and you now have a new subscriber. I'm going to watch more of this channel. Oh btw, your voice reminds me of good old Slip Mahoney from the Bowery Boys....I love it. EDIT ADD. Please note that when I nerved myself up to watch the episode, I was a middle aged, married, mother of two grown children and for once had a weekend afternoon to myself. I started watching from the opening (so for once I watched an entire episode) and I was intrigued, and became more so when I saw a very young Robert Redford as the cop. I had to find out more. Wish you had included the final scene, where she finally takes his hand, he directs her to the bed and she sees herself just quietly laid out, no blood or trauma, and he says, "See? What you thought would end with a bang, started with a whisper." Extremely powerful stuff. Thank you for this. Happy New Year, and best of luck with this channel. This was something a little different, I loved it. I gotta check out your Twilight Zone vs The Devil vid next. This was also sort of like a fun recap to a few of your previous videos. I can't recall enough episodes to come up with my own list but of these picks my order would be Leonard as the one whose appearance is the most unsettling then Redford and then Hamilton.

Death is a necessary part of life. I like that Death has many faces because it is a cosmic force that doesn't just have a single identity. I love all the incarnations of Death in this video. I like Murray Hamilton's Death because he doesn't act like the stereotypical, spooky scary angel of death. He acted like a professional businessman simply doing his job. Nothing in the Dark is a sad episode dealing with death that although tragic, death is necessary.

Haven't watched the 3 featured but did watch the honorable mentioned episode with room 22 and the creepy nurse.. That one was an excellent episode.. But the hitchhiker looks super intriguing.. Kinda reminded me for a moment of the 70s flick "Duel" love that movie. This one I'll have to watch. Great list.. I'll have to check these out👍

Great segment. All three were good and never thought that the nurse could possibly be death. I like the business type who just looks at collecting people as a job. I also enjoy the kind, gentler death character as a welcoming presence. However, would you consider "fats" from a nice place to visit as an honorable mention for death?

Here's a question for you and your viewers, Anthony: When Rod announces Mr. Death at the beginning of "One For The Angels", and the character abruptly turns his head to look directly into the camera as he hears his name mentioned, does this qualify as the first instance of "breaking the fourth wall" in an anthology TV series? 1:13 (Prior to this episode, the trope had earlier been used, but only in the sitcom _The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show_ and in animated shows such as such as Bugs Bunny and other _Looney Tunes_ cartoons.) Do you think "One For The Angels" even qualifies as an example of breaking the fourth wall? (I do, but I'd be interested in reading other people's thoughts.) As for the rankings, I decided to post them separately to keep this from being overly long as I have a habit of doing with my comments. Actually, there is one ranking I will post here, and that's a second "Honorable Mention". I'm taking liberties of a sort by including this one, but because it's a science fiction episode I think it's okay to bend the rules slightly. And here I'm thinking of Mr. Death in the form of a jovial and conscientious --but very lethal --robot (humanoid) caretaker named Jeremy Wickwire. He is activated when three astronauts low on fuel lands on the Earthlike asteroid over which he looks. Before meeting him the trio walks through a town in which all of the inhabitants aren't moving, and seem petrified. Finally, Wickwire reveals himself to them, explaining that the asteroid serves as a cemetery for rich people, who are given the opportunity to fulfill their most cherished fantasies after they die (e.g., attractive contestants at a beauty pageant are seen as losing out to a homely, bespectacled is the one wearing the crown). His functions include peacekeeping, and they tell him how they have been away from Earth for a long time, as the planet took a great amount if time to recover from a nuclear war. When he asks what most they would like, they all say they wished they were back in their spaceship heading back home on Earth. He then pours them wine, but after they have drunk he informs them that their drinks have been spiked with a poison he calls "eternifying fluid", that will render them frozen like everyone they saw. Confused by what he did, they ask him why, and his mood goes from jovial to stern, emphasizing to them that they "are men, and while there are men, there can be no peace.". In the final scene, set in their spaceship, we see the three motionless in their seats, as Wickwire uses a feather duster on them, while some light-hearted music plays. So, I see this as dark comedy--humor with a creep factor heightened by a robot Mr. Death.

Love this channel, it's such a hidden Gem

I agree with "Nothing in the Dark" having the best Mr. Death... _maybe._ Robert Redford has to be, how shall I say it -- the most _life-affirming_ -- of the various iterations. He seals the deal when he reaches out his hands to Gladys Cooper's character (Wanda) and says "Mother." Any lingering fear she might have had melted away at that moment. I'm fine with how it goes from being a horror episode to one in which the horror is removed in the final act, and wouldn't want it any other way. Nevertheless, you know me liking to mess around with episodes for the fun of it, Anthony. In this case, it's going to be in the form of an add-on at the very end--so now it's going from horror to a happy ending to...? When Wanda looked outside and saw a young, handsome police officer who's apparently wounded and lying on the pavement, she seals her doom by breaking her own rule. Once he's inside her apartment, she begins nursing him back to health, until she realizes he really _Is_ Death, and protests that he tricked her. He quickly reassures her that he means her no harm, but is simply helping her transition to the other side. And hand-in-hand they walk out of the dark tenement and into the sunlight. Unfortunately, in this version they never make it to the door, because he tricks her a second time, stripping away his young man disguise to reveal THIS! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-H4D8NSItHQU.html (Sorry, Wanda, you should have left that door locked. Oh, well...) I said "maybe" when it comes to "Nothing in the Dark" having the best Mr. Death, because I don't have a clear #1 in mind. Ask me today and it will be my top pick, but ask me tomorrow and it's "The Hitch-Hiker" for the two are to close to have a definite selection. Yes, Redford is great as is Cooper as his prey, but no greater than Leonard Strong and Inger Stevens. Let's face it, Redford has some great dialogue to sink his acting chops into, whereas I believe Strong has only two lines: "Heading west?" and "I believe you're going _my way?"_ He had more work to do than Redford in that sense, relying on creepy closeups to send the chills up our spine, until that point where she attempts to cross the railroad tracks as he menacingly beckons for her to take a chance. The best feature of the episode for me--and, one I'd say is even better than the other two--is how he and Ed Wynn as the loveable salesman Lew Bookman engage in a battle of one-upsmanship: First, Lew swindles Death by being given the opportunity to live until he finally makes one great sales pitch--one for the angels--before taking his leave of life. Unfortunately, Lew has to gloat that that could take years and years, making his adversary aware of the trick, after which Mr. Death plays dirtier pool by telling Bookman that he has to get someone in place of Lew to fill his ledger entry, so he has a little neighbor girl, Maggie, get hit by a truck and will take her with him at midnight. Fond of the child, Lew realizes that he's going to do his super sales pitch sooner than later, Death gives him until midnight and then loses track of the time as he listened enthralled to pitch, and is unable to claim Maggie, though he gets Lew. I like that Mt. Death botches his job a bit. (Reminder: Is that breaking the 4th wall?) It's great that you added "Twenty-Two" as an Honorable Mention, Anthony. True, we can't tell if Arlene Martel (billed as Arlene Sax) is Death or a harbinger of Death, but she may even outcreep Strong, or is at least at his level of creepiness. No, I've got to give the slight edge to Arlene. She has a more overtly deathlike appearance, and her "Room for one more, honey" sounds more in-your-face menacing' To make it short, her presence is more deadly than the hitch-hiker, who somehow seems more implied. Maybe because he's out on the open road, where one would think it easier to get away from him, while she's a morgue nurse in nightmarish cold storage that seems to stretch on forever (4:00). I actually like Arlene even better as the flight attendant at the end of the episode, when "professional dancer" Liz Powell (Barbara Nichols) begins to board the plane. As Liz reached the top of some steep stairs, she's terrified as she hears the unwelcome greeting, "Room for one more, honey". As Liz stumbles back down the steps, we see Arlene at the top with the same emotionless look on her face as she had as morgue nurse. Why this one's more memorable is that on the place she has this great take where she cocks her head while momentarily having a curious "what was that all about?" expression. If she's Death, the pose could signify that "Oh, well, I didn't get Liz this time, but sooner or later" ala the _Final Destination_ series.
