Out of all the stupid, I mean super trucker videos on 5&4 shifting that is the only time I've ever seen it done the right way. Used to drive an old Ford with a god awful 3208 cat and a 5&4, total piece of shit but man I got good at going through the gears on that thing
@@carlwilliams1570 mine was orange, both were probably either ex state or ex county. Which is kind of funny thinking about it since most current county and state workers can't even drive a 9 speed let alone a 2 sticker
Good old 2 and a quarter Kitty shitter! The first fords to have them they were actually designed to fit in place of a 477 or 534 gasser that was the standard for Fords at the time, basically all they wanted was a cheap Diesel engine that made the same power as a big block gasser but was cheaper on fuel.
You culd tell those old brownie drivers when they made the move to a simpler tranny, like a straight 9, or even a bus with a 4 and a two speed axle. They'd wind those so-and-so's so tight make you grit your teeth. lol
Spent some time driving dump trucks with those things. I was young and thought it was great fun. We skipped some gears because they were so close together Wound the piss outa those tall deck 427 Chevies we had. Never blew one up though!
Same with an old IHC 392 we're getting ready to retire (a 1975 Loadstar 1800 grain dump with the same pattern 5x4). Generally only use the 4 speed between 3-4 on the main, and only 3-2, 3-3, 4-2, 4-3, as the gear overlap is ridiculous. The 4 speed 1st gets used off-road, plus to avoid main first. They said the transmission is older than the truck. Shift the 5 speed synchronized trans at 3500, then double-clutch the 4spd up or down.
It was a trick but, I learned 10, 12, 13, and 18 speed Eatons in 2019 to get my CDL-A. Never got to try one of these but would love the opportunity. Great shifting. As a mechanic, I can see that this is more of an art form than a science. Plus lots of timing and rhythm. 4.5 stars because I thought I heard and saw a little grinding. But I've talked to retired truckers who said nobody ever had a perfect day with these things I wanna learn it
Dad had a L8000, heavy spec., tandem dump, geared low for local hauling, with a Spicer 5 / 4. As a kid, I can still picture him splitting gears, only now I’d describe it as simultaneously pushing and pulling two mismatched levers on a rattling old slot machine. 🤣
I did a lot of that with the gas tandems we had, only problem was about the time you get through all the gears on those gutless bastards it’s time to start slowing down to turn!
Thank god for this video. Just bought a 76 4300 international small cam 350 cummins with a 5&4 and it really made me scratch my head at first until I stumbled across this
@@SouthSaskFarmer1 I went back to the shop got in mine and shifted it like this and fell in love with it. Went flawless until the 4spd box got caught in 3rd but I got under it and popped it out and sprayed the shafts with some Schaefer’s lube and limbered it up a lot.
Man I don't miss that. When my brothers and I were your age we had a 59 Dodge 700 tandem with a dead axle. We decided that we needed a twin screw. I found a 64 IH loadstar with a henrickson and a 3 speed. The frames were a different size but we made it fit and double framed it. Of course the truck was pretty cool. Lol and we were young. I like my 9 and 10 speed a lot more. Lol
Dam good job Nick there not too many guys that can drive a 5and a 4 anymore !👍👍👍😉 The first truck I learned how to drive had a 5 and a 3 it was a 1961 White with a straight 6 gas single cab twin screw and a 650 bushel box!👍
I was a twin stick junky years ago. I had a Ford with a 5+3. You could climb a mountain or fly. I'de reach through the steering wheel to mix gears. I don't miss driving it in the cities. Ha ha. MB BAR RANCH
Nice job here in northern Ontario I have an old corn binder like that use in the bush which is fun . I had an older fella drive it and he could split shift it , make it keep up to the big boys . By the by my International is an old dog 1910 series and the model year is 1972 was my Grand fathers
Dam Nick, that was exciting to watch. Thought I was slick with my chevs with a 4 and 2 and our old truck with a 5 and 2. I have an IH gasser for sale with a straight 5 speed. Thought I'd really miss the 2 speed, but not really a big deal. Interesting to watch. Now next time let's see you do that while eating a sandwich!! LOL! TOG out. Doug Piper is a funny guy!! Lol.
I used to drive a 5 4 hauling sugar beets I'd need practice to remember how I did it if I were ever to do that again. Good video, brings back memories.
When I was in the navy I drove a ford that had the same setup everyday from Norfolk to Portsmouth Va at least 3 times a day for about nine months delivering supply's to the carrier I was stationed on. By the end I was really tired of that old truck and sick of shifting so much. Having a fuller is almost like having a automatic next to one of those. Lol
South Sask Farmer they make us have a heavy licence for anything over 4.5 tonnes gross vehicle mass. Anyway I can tell she’s itching to have a go so don’t hold her back.
IH put a lot of those 5+4 trans in , not many left now. I drove sugar beet truck with that trans a lot of years ago and my neighbor had 4 trucks like that and everyone drove them different. Mechanic told me that the 5+4 was bullet proof but still the most hated trans.
I drove one many yrs back. A friend bought a 1968 semi with a 5 by 4. He asked me. I told him the little I recalled. He said he watched videos where you MUST shift both at same time. I was sure I shifted one, then the other. (Sometimes both on same shift but separately. This helps remind me. I was only going 25 miles. Small lumberyard truck, and older farmer grain trucks. So longest strait away maybe 3 miles. Top speed 45 mph and too dang much shifting.
Holy grinding coffee batman. haha. I learned on a 72 x 13 letter shit spreader w/a 392, 5x4. Frank would not allow me to take my hand off the steering wheel. I had to shift the chopsticks one hand. Shifter' rite in the ketchup. Great vidya.
I’m late to the party but I grew up driving a 5+4 in a 66 Fargo with a 413 industrial gas. On the 4 I used 2 in the field loaded, 3 on the road loaded, 4 on the road empty and 1 when backing up to the auger. I never had to shift on the fly unless I wanted to. So basically I just drove it like a 5 speed. I was never shown how to shift on the fly like that. We farmed south of Outlook.
Having a whooper drinking a pop. All the time driving in 6-8 inches of white crap going 60 MPH grossing 80,000. Hell I shifted better just be listening to the engine never could double clutch worth a damn
no problem l can do that and roll a cigarette and not spill any tobacco rolling out of the bush or on the road. l learned that at 12 yrs old from my dad. if you didn't do it right you got your Butt kicked.
Well that was a letdown. I was expecting some complicated shift pattern and a bunch of two-handed shifting. Damn Internationals and having all the gears in number order!
I like the way you challenged yourself... Let's see if I miss a gear🤣😂 Only driven a couple of twins... 4&3, 4&4, 5&3, 5&4, and a little upgraded one.. 10&4. Never owned one.. '59 Pete had the 5&4 replaced with a deep 15... Climb a tree or walk away.. I have no idea how fast she would go, but the previous owner had the speeding ticket framed in his office... 87mph with a full gear left🤣😂 Nice demonstration Nick!!! Would be a bitch too video in a cabover 🤣😁
holy cripes! If I shifted that bad, my Dad and Brother R.I.P. would be rolling over in their grave. Then come back from the grave just to slap the shit out of me. I was taught you treat the truck just like you would treat your lady. NICE! And that old truck will give it's last backfire for you.
You could put anther box in there you had anuf time to shift anther box. L.o.l nice one. How come they put to box's in the truck as it's a small truck anyway. Nice job as you had the presher off being filmed doing. Or how many times did you have to film it to get right. L.o.l
Now you know kids where they got the gearshifts for Fast and Furious movies. They also changes gears 5 times for every gear and still barely moved forward.
I stopped shifting the chevy like that since the dam aux trans would jam all the time...have to have a pry bar in the cab all the time to get it back out of gear lol
5 speed with 4 ranges, i grew driving one. 1st and 1st was field, there is no sense in using all 20 gears. We would run up to pickup equipment and put it in 5x4 and cruise at 80. It Was new and unloaded. Hear that grinding, that means you're doing it wrong.
That is pain in my ass with 5x4 tried it just didn't like it ,I miss the 13 speed with overdrive best 13 speed I driving, also drove a 7 speed no splitter didn't care much for it and a 10 speed was somewhat ok but the power with a load was under power that suck lol😀 thanks for showing the shifting on 5x4 it looks like a truck hauling sugar beets the same crap.
@@SouthSaskFarmer1 That's not important, my friend. DT 466 or not, for a S1900, the engine sounds very good and you are very good shifting the gears. And your truck still having the original 5 spoke rims. That's great!!
Driven both ways... Pain in the ass when you forget Wich one you're playing with!!! Drove a Mack Quadriplex, air shift.. it didn't matter how you shifted, so, yup... Thumb shifted😎
@@straightpipeacres6365 yup..lol.. yet, all I own are nine's and tens🤣😂 Just a little slower up the hills, but with 425+, flat ground can get a guy in trouble 🤣😂
Congrats!!!!!! This is a very educational and funny vídeo, you are very good at shifting. Tell me something, whats your personal opinion of these kind of trasmissions?
Sorry to know that!! I've always wondered if this kind of set Up could improved the performance of a no very powerfull engine (dt's, Detroits 53's, cummins vt's, perkins 6354's etc.) Compared to a rt6610 Or a rt6613. Thanks anyway, keep sharing shifthing videos new generations need to know this things.
Well I guess it’s fair to say that truck is not very city friendly that’s insane that twin stick and I know they used to make ones of three sticks to I could just imagine how much fun that would be to drive
How in the hell are you supposed to drive that with a smoke, beer and cell phone at the same time? The synchros where nice LOL. My dad drove a Mac cabover for awhile for a fertilizer outfit and he just laughed if you cant find it grind it. I believe it was an old cement truck at one time. lol good times
Never had the "privilege" of driving a 5+4. 3 ton set up for spraying is a 4+2. Pete is a 18 speed with the Cat in it. Everything else is powershift or automatic on this farm haha. You're faster with your arms than me.
Does that truck have hydraulic brakes? I see a driveline parking brake and I thought by 79 all air brake trucks had maxi brakes on at least 1 rear axle, but maybe not. A tandem with juice brakes sure would be interesting!
Hiya Nick! Kind of thinking this could be a wonderful opportunity for Antoine to constructively critique your demonstration run there. Hey Antoine, is that how you split your shifters? -Bob...
Looks like a pain in the ass! I think the easiest I have ever driven was a Freightliner with a 400 cummins, and a 9 speed. Only problem was no way to shift with out double clutching, and I mean no way. Drove an old GMC Astro cab over, with a 8-92 grizzly, 13 over, and easier with no clutch. So to each there own I guess. Have you ever tried double clutching on the 4 side, of that?
I have a 1987 S-Series School Bus that I retrofitted the same Spicer 7041 Auxiliary in! I have a DTA360 as opposed to a DT466, but sounds the same, and the main box is a 5 speed Eaton. I also have air brakes... Lots of videos of mine out there! What is your max road speed?
