Ever wonder what kind of transmission is in a Lamborghini Huracan (Audi R8)? From the state-of-the-art Forza Tuning and Performance facility in sunny Clearwater, Florida, industry leading performance guru Brenton Brown (The Exotic Car Doc) takes us through a total rebuild (with upgrades) of a DL800 7-Speed DCT gearbox. Piece-by-piece, Brenton explains every component of this extreme-duty DL800 gearbox upgrade.
Brenton begins his DL800 upgrade by showcasing some aftermarket billet case covers. Replacing factory plastic and cast aluminum case components with billet parts will yield a stronger and more rigid case for the 7-speed DCT gearbox.
From there, Brenton breaks down the gear replacement strategy. Since second gear is typically a weak point for the DL800 7-speed DCT gearbox, Brenton will replace it with a billet gear. This will minimize the chances of a malfunction in second gear. The stock clutch in the DL800 7-speed DCT gearbox will be upgraded with a Dodson Promax 9-plate clutch with billet cover and billet basket. Replacing the clutch with the Promax unit will
prevent catastrophic clutch failure under the extreme loads generated by the Forza engine modifications.
The DL800 will also get an upgraded differential carrier and new bearings. The new Wavetrac differential carrier will make this 7-speed DCT gearbox much more durable and promote improved power distribution to the rear wheels. The DL800 7-speed DCT gearbox will also get improved stub shafts and cv axles.
