Twinkly RGB LED Lights, testing them again before Christmas

Having used one of the Twinkly lights for two years now and the other one time, I take a look at them again to see if there is anything new in the app and if they still work and are ready for Christmas since I missed Halloween. :D

I'm stuck debating strings 400 RGB+W (more $$) or strings 600 RGB (less $$). I seem to read the 400 RGB+W is ideal. Planning on using for outdoor tree(s) and front bannister, maybe carport. Thoughts?

I haven't tried the +W versions but I have not been able to get a good warm white color from the non +W versions. So if you imagine that you would would like warm white, it would probably be a good idea to go for the +W versions. If not, I would go for more LEDS. I have yet to hear from anyone buying Twinkly Lights that they felt like they got too many LEDS. People always seems to want more. :)

Ours worked last year and we're stunning but trying to pair them this year and get connected, no internet message so won't pair with app. Any ideas?

Hmm. Not sure. I have done a reset of the chains and started over. Hold down the buttons for 5 seconds while powering up and start over. If all fails, try to position one of the chains close to your WiFi and see if that helps. Sometimes there can be interference from devices in the house or neighbors that might have changed since last year.

I’ve just come across these lights, and have been doing research before investing in them. I have a tree outside that I decorate for Halloween and Christmas, and changing the lights from one holiday to another can be daunting (especially when it’s cold, and weather can be an issue). I’ve found these lights to be ideal for that, but I’m interested in finding out how well they will dance in sync to a music playlist. No just a preprogrammed set list, but one I create from my own music playlist. I would really like to see a video of that since I’ve yet to come across such displays with these lights. Enjoyed your video, and found it very resourceful.

Hi. I would really like to see that as well. They are working on a new controller that should be able to do something like that. I should be receiving one of those at some point. But I don’t know when. I heard late summer back in February (iirc). I will be making video on that if I ever get that unit.

Hi Martin. Thank you for sharing your experience with these lights. I like them, but I find them a bit techno... sometimes one wants just classic and simple lights. I can not see myself playing with different modes. But for children, I find them absolutely awesome. These lights can add up to the playful Xmas feel.

My pleasure. You are right that they can seem a bit much. I think a lot of people around me prefer the old styles as well. Its just that I also like gadgets. 😀 I really like the glow of old incandescent bulbs, which is why I haven’t replaced all the bulbs in my old pinball machines. Cheers.

I bought a string of the 2nd generation of these, and I was a bit disappointed. It flickers a lot, even on steady colors, and the camera tracking in the app seem to miss some lights. Also, slowing down effects make them jitter/lag instead of smoothing the transitions. I'll be going back to my WS2811 string lights and Arduino controller.

Sounds like a plan. I thought that some of the flickering were due to too little cpu power but maybe it is the power supply. It should not exist for a product at that price. I am warming to the idea of a home built system myself now.

@@rud I believe the flicker is due to the refresh rate and the protocol the LEDs use to communicate.

Autunite I think you are right about that. Some combinations seems worse. Maybe when it has too many changes at once it can’t cope.

Hej Martin. Hvordan er din erfaring med at få lysene synkroniseret? Jeg har et sæt Icicle og overvejer at købe et sæt mere, men vil gerne have, de er synced, så de lyser nogenlunde ens.

Ikke fantastisk, men håbefuld med den opdaterede app. Har lige købt en icicle som jeg modtog i dag så jeg kan vende tilbage om et par dage med svar. Tog lidt en chance og håber på det virker som jeg tror. :D Jeg spurgte Twinkly hvordan man kan mikse dem og de sagde at man kan ikke mikse RGB og RGB-W, det skal være samme type LED og så skulle man kunne, også på tværs af generationer. Tror dog det var en gen 1 til jeg fik købt. Men anyways, jeg sætter det op i løbet af ugen, så kan vi se om det spiller.

Great channel! I bought the 400 string lights gen 2 this year. I have a few of the gen 1s, and I think it is worse than gen 1, maybe they need to work on software updates, because it flickers, skipping/wrong colors on a few leds and so on. And I am still missing a feature that let you set a loop pattern between different effects. Lets say that you have 5 favourites, and you want to choose them and set a timer for 5mins, and after those 5mins it changes to the next effect on the list and so on.

MrBenpa 😊 thanks. I am doing different experiments on types of videos so the quality might be varied. I am about to install the gen 2 lights so I will keep an eye out for that. I agree that it would be a great feature if it was possible to do a bit more programming but I have a suspicion that their solution might be underpowered for that. It also seems strange that it can’t keep up and be flicker-less which might point to it being underpowered. Cheers.

Do the Twinkly lights ever go on sale after Christmas?

I just looked and I can see that they, at least here in Denmark, are at an all time low price. I checked pricerunner and they seem to be 70% lower in price than compared march 2020. I was looking to buying a few weeks about and noticed the price being 20% lower than earlier this summer. Could indicate a new version coming out soon or maybe overstock. They have been quite pricy. So not sure what is going on, doesn't seem the way prices go this time of year and with the supply chain problems and all. Of course prices can be different around the world.

Just bought two boxes of Twinkly 600 string lights for my 15' Christmas tree. I'll be doing 2D mapping since the tree is in a corner.

That is a big tree :D You will be able to do some of the really cool animations with that many lights! I'd like to do a wall of lights outside, but I think I will start getting complaints from the neighbors. :)

@@kairu.kun.z 2D uses the camera and flashes the bulbs in different colors to detect them. I don't know what/how 3D does it.

Yes, at least you could last Christmas, although the music controller were only compatible with gen 2. I will be making more of these videos again by the end of the year. Have a great day.

Do you know if you can buy replacement parts for these? Im trying to work out if they are worth the big cost when they only come with a 12 month warranty

Good point. They are definitely not made in a way where you can replace parts of them. Furthermore the wires are kind of thin and doesn't feel like a premium product. They have a "pro" line as well, I have no information on that. In comparison, for $40 i can buy a modular chain in my hardware store. It is not "smart iot", and not controllable. But I have some of them lasting 5+ years now. ( just for picture example: www.bauhaus.dk/markslojd-lyskaede-chrissline-100-led-varm-hvid ). I like the Twinkly, it's a great gadget and I have much fun setting it up and I am looking forward to doing it again this weekend. But I decided not to expand my collection this year. The one that I was looking at costs +$200 so I decided to spend that on something else. :)

florin cogean likewise. :). I’d say first check that you have proper WiFi coverage at the precise spot the little black controller box will be located. Try holding a cell phone or tablet there to see if you are connected we good connection. Then if you have to do manual mapping with the camera, something to steady the phone when scanning would be good. And reflections in windows, cars etc can confuse it a bit so orient the picture to eliminate as much of the surroundings as possible.

florin cogean hi. For some reason I didn’t see your reply. You can mount them any way you want. It have/had an assisted mode where it would have some lights on for a guided way to align them if you didn’t want to use the camera. Haven’t tried that out though.

Martin J I did it, but it's a bit frustrating, because the LED's are not enough for my tree. I got the 400 pack, but I couldn't arrange it properly. Last raw remanded empty. So I made some improvisation and leave the back of the tree empty, on the the last 1/3. 🎄is 210cm, but it could be 240cm 🤷🏻‍♂️ Next year I will buy another 200 pack and I will make it perfect. Anyway, it looks gorgeous just like the way it is right now.

I just had a look at it and I'd like one of those. :D But I don't really have any use for it so it's bit much to spend just to play with it.
