I saw Journey live. Can you imagine what it takes for a singer to continue with awesome vocals as he is running around on the stage through the whole concert? Steve Perry will always be my favorite male singer. " THE VOICE" of my generation.
I'm 62 years old and I was in the Navy when I was 17 and stationed in Italy. Journey was at the height of their success. I remember thinking then how blessed I was to be alive and young during that time because surely music could never get better than this (rock was at its appex). Turns out I was right.
Lead guitarist is the legend himself…Neal Schon. He’s still out there ripping that guitar to this day. Saw Journey live in 1983. There wasn’t a stadium they couldn’t sellout. Live in Houston 1981 they were in their prime here. Love watching a new generation discovering the music I heard as a teenager on my radio everyday. More Journey please…they are still my favorite band after 42 years.
Steve Perry AKA “The Voice” is always amazing. I had the privilege to see them in concert three times and every time they sound as good as the album. One of the greatest bands of all time. Pick an album that has Steve Perry, then pick a song off of the album and you will not be disappointed. Great memories. 😁👍🫡
Never watched you guys before. Couple of good dudes. Journey is probably my favorite band & Mr.Perry is hands down the best singer. Even Freddie Mercury said that - high praise.
Journey is amazing live! Need to listen to Stone in Love, Mother Father, Open Arms, Faithfully, Wheel in the Sky... Too many to list! I was only 10 when Steve Perry joined and never had the chance to see in concert because tickets always sold out😞
As others have mentioned, the guitarist is Neal Schon. A tune I HIGHLY recommend is "Mother Father" from this same concert (Live in Houston - 1981)... Steve Perry hits notes at the end that will blow your mind, Neal Schon has a guitar-shredding solo, Jonathan Cain kills it on the piano, and Ross Valory (bass) and Steve Smith (drums) rock it as well. By the way, I had the good fortune of seeing Journey back in the Steve Perry era about a half-dozen times.
When I heard this song for the first time back in 1981 I would have never guessed in a million years that it would still be relevant over 40 years later. I agree it's a well-crafted, well-performed, and uplifting song and one of my favorite songs of all time. I saw Journey live in Charlotte back in 1985 and this 1981 Houston performance was not a fluke. I'd love to know why it resonates with younger people since this song is so anti-modern. It's a pretty simple mix, no drop, and you don't even get the main "hook" until very late in the song. As for the tank tops c'mon guys it was the 80's!! You would have been wearing them too!! You should def get some for your next Journey reaction.
When a went to the Meadowlands NJ show in 1981 and Steve was hitting these notes on every song i knew i was witnessing something special and extraordinary. And by the way at the Meadowlands show Neil the guitarist was hit in the head with a beer. We thought that the show was going to be terminated. Thank God it went on. Of all the shows ive seen that vocal performance was tops.Steve was at his peak.
I've seen Journey live...incredible, even better live than in studio. The next song from this same concert should be "Mother, Father". One of the best live vocals ever!
One of the best songs ever written and an anthem that still gives me chills to this day. Steve Perry will always be Journey! Live or album there is no denying the talent that is Journey. I saw Journey in the early 80's and there aren't many that can sound like the album the way these guys do.
Saw them 4 times in the 80s… always perfect! Steve contributed so much more than just his voice to that group! He actually constructed this song, leaving the chorus till the end.. His co-writers were asking..”chorus now?” ..Steve replied.. no not yet.. Make ‘em wait for it” 💞 The group is still out there, but they are nothing like they were with “The Voice” of #StevePerry 💞 Great review guys 😊
Yes my girlfriend’s and I went to see them while they were in Dallas! They were fantastic, perfect!!!!! And we all went to see Steve Perry, we were in love with him, lol!!!!!❤️❤️❤️❤️
I've been a long time Classic Journey, and I'm very grateful to have seen them live in concert! Journey played in Houston, Tx in 1983 for their Frontiers tour. They had 3 sold out shows. 2 of which I attended and then I saw them again in 1986 for their Raised On Radio tour. And then for Steve Perry's first solo tour in 1994. Journey back then were amazing in concert! However, Steve Perry is a Great Showman!!! He and the band just makes you feel as if you are the ONLY ONE there!!! Steve is known for making the concerts so personal! Ex.....I know he did at the shows I went to. Where he'll asked the lightmen.....'HEY turn the house lights on, I want to see my friends!! Yeah, there we go!!' And then he'll point making you feel as if he spotted you!!! He's also know to do the 'search'!! Meaning he'll put his hand over his eyes like he's searching for you!! And as you heard, he likes to change the Detroit, to the city they're playing in! You just can't go wrong with any Classic Journey songs!!
Fellas, I was at this concert in Houston back in November 1981. I was 13 years old, and it was the greatest night ever! The best concert I've ever been to.
Get to know Steve Perry. What a life story he has. And he is the GOAT, no contest. And the top he has on, simply the style of the Era, nothing more. I have seen him and this band live, electrifying!
Guitar is Journey co- founder Neal Schon, a child prodigy guitarist who joined the Rock Band Santana at age 15 playing with legendary guitarist Carlos Santana. He and keyboardist and lead vocalist for many Santana hits Gregg Rolie founded Journey. Steve Perry was not the original lead vocalist for Journey. It was Robert Fkeischman. Steve joined the band in 1978. Escape and Dont Stop Believin waa released in 1981. The song wasn't the biggest hit off Of Escaie it took off almost 30 years later featured on the hit show the Sopranos and in the film Monster and just received entry into the Library of Congress for its songwriting and influence on pop culture. It is also the number one song download to I Tunes.
@mikenastasi8927 I know. Dont think I said he was on any albums just Journey's lead vocalist prior to Steve. Technically, Rolie did sing on earlier recordings while performing keys. Thanks though for adding further clarification. RIP to George Tickner on his passing this week as a co founder and original Journey member.
@@joanfisher1079 You had said that Perry wasn't the original singer, it was Robert Fleischman and Steve joined in 78. That's what I was trying to clear up. Even then, Fleischman wasn't with them very long.
@@mikenastasi8927Gregg and Neal sang on the first three albums. The Fleischmann experiment was a no-go. The audiences hated him and he was swiftly replaced by Perry.
I was in the concert biz back in the day and worked more than one show with these guys. Played them in softball once. Robert Fleischman almost trashed the speakers in my car while driving him to the airport from a party we'd been at. Those were the days... ;O)
I was fortunate enough to have grown up in the 80's and there was always something magical about Journey and the iconic and amazing voice of Steve Perry.
I love your reaction....man it was killer growing up on this sound and in the 80's . We literally went from the darkness to the light in technology and the music was the greatest in the world 🌍.
Top 10 song of all time any genre any era Also, his top was specially designed to help him maintain his voice through the long concert and his incredible vocal runs. It contained special triple ply moisture wicking carbon nanofiber tubes that supported his diaphragm.
Thank you for listening to some of the best musical talents ever. Thats how we listened to this music, bobbing our heads with our eyes closed at times, just getting lost in the music. Much success to you both.
This song gets people out of any depressing mood that people might find themselves in uplift the human spirit that why it is so popular song great voice great guitar just all-around great song. I think almost everyone in U.S. A. heard it at least once. Me I heard it at least 1,000 times or more love this song and Journey the band we are on our own journey in this life that why it so relatable song. thanks for reaction video.
Steve Perry is hands down, the greatest male voice of all time. There are others that are great also but nobody touches him. Watch the studio version & the live version back-to-back & see if they are not the closest sounding to each other compared to other studio/live versions.
Neal Schon is the guitarist. I saw Journey 5 times live in the 80's & they were always excellent! About Steve's shirt....hey, that was fashion in the 80's! Lol Great reaction!
I saw these guys along with almost every group from the Beatles thru the mid 70s with Grand Funk and more than I can list. They LOVED DETROIT and Detroit in my days was the center for music, period. Motown started it going and IF YOU STUDY it you will see how many great groups/entertainers came from Michigan. Journey was NOT one of them but they L.O.V.E.D. DETROIT. In fact this song was written by Perry looking out of his hotel room in Detroit. He said he saw people below walking through the streetlights looking like shadows and it inspired him. The words to the song actually go "Just a small town boy, born in raised in South Detroit" (which FYI there is NO South Detroit, there is a area called Downriver)THEY WERE AWESOME. In my day we had great music, great entertainment. No Autotune, No great sound enhancements, NO back up tracks. You went out played your best and it wasn't correctable if ya F'D up. You had one shot at the songs. Mixing Board could only do so much. Just RAW AWESOME TALENT
I was 15..the first time I saw Journey in concert.. My Mom made me go with my sister's b... he was 19 and a good Christian boy.. he hated the concert.. he loved Genisis... but he took the pill and took me to see Journey (my first time).. and he got thrown up on.... from the upper deck.. lol... the lead guiatarist is Neil Schon... Amazing guitar player.. I've heard he actually gave lessons to Eddie VanHalen
LOVED Journey back in those days. Still liking em today. And boys...hate to say it, but you are correct about the top. Many rockers wore ladies stuff, just because, usually it had more flair. I do believe that is a females blouse. Otherwise this was a wicked killer top notch live music video, as far as I'm concerned. Big shoutout from this old, longhaired, hippy dude in the mountains of East Tennessee. Thanks, guys. Peace. Later.
My older sister was at that concert. Houston native. In one of the songs you briefly see her face😂. We would try to pause it back in the days so should could see, but it was next to impossible lol. Her fave band. Shes seen them probably 20x Neil Schon is an expectional guitarist. Not thought of as a Top 10 Great, but dude was above the curve and could really jam. One of my faves
Other great music: “Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me” a duet with Elton John and George Michael, “Livin’ La Vida Loca” by Ricky Martin, “Run to You” by Whitney Houston, “Feels So Right” by Alabama & “If I Can Dream” by Elvis Presley“. Sorry to lay this all out at once but I don’t get on here very often. Love your reactions.
Kinda makes me sad this era is gone. Saw these guys twice when I was a teen along with so many others. Watching old live videos still gives me out of body vibes. I wish everyone could travel back in time to see one concert at the peak of rock. I couldnt even pick just one band to sum up the ultimate experience. Then again, it wouldnt matter... they were all legends in the making.
I saw this tour on Halloween night, 1981 in Mobile, AL; just a week before this show. Steve was wearing that same weird-ass shirt whilst the rest of the band wore Halloween regalia. High school was a blast that year, man.
As far as the clothes, dude it’s 1981. It was the style. Don’t mess with my 80’s. Just teasing. You guys are great. Old souls. Thank you for not pausing every two seconds. I hate that.💚
I saw them live they were great awesome and amazing I saw them in San Antonio tx and that top he had on who cares really he is a legend it doesn’t matter what he wears he is Fire ! Faithfully is another great one 😊
This is said to be the most downloaded song of all time…Have seen them live 20 plus times over the years. Watch guitar central- this concert “ Who’s Crying Now”.
