The drumming gets me every time I watch this video. Compexity, nuance, Power, ferocity and precision. He’s is just back there owning it. RIP The Professor.
@@christophercattieNeil worked with his dad in an auto body supply store before getting the opportunity to meet Ged and Alex awite ... "Circumstances" play a part son ...
This song came out in 1982. Yes, Geddy will sing, play bass with his hand and synth with his feet at times. Alex will also use the moog petals at times and also play keyboards as well switching off his guitar to do so. All are multi talented individuals.
This song is autobiographical for Rush because it is their experience with being outcasts. Growing up many of us related to the feeling of not feeling in. Rush always connected to me in a very deep way. Most will if you listen to the lyrics.
There was an interview with Eddie van halen and he asked what it was like to be the best guitarist in the world and he replied''I dont know ask Alex Lifeson''
read the article David Lee Roth mentions on Moving Picture tour where both bands crews had a scuffle in the UK hotel bar- no doubt Eddie/VH was interested in what and how Rush was incorporating keyboards into their music the album 1984 by VH you can hear the influence from Rush
Great reaction, as usual!! You may or may not want to react to this, but Rush's live "Xanadu" from Exit Stage Left will give you an education regarding what these 3 talented multi-taskers can do as a trio on stage.
1982, the year I graduated from high school. This song could have been about me and my friends who were the poor kids, while the rich kids had their own cliques and clubs. We did not conform to their lifestyles because we could not afford to so we were cast out (actually never allowed in). To this day I avoid my high school reunions.
the genius of rush how they could make odd time sound normal for audience this intro is in 7/8 time then shifts seamless into 4/4 common time and accent hits are really 4:3 ( sounds like time against time) meter and replicated this note for note over decades of touring crazy good
“Subdivisions” was on the “Signals” album, which was released in September, 1982. Neil Peart wrote the lyrics. The video was filmed around the same time in downtown Toronto and the surrounding suburbs.
Rush, Tom Sawyer, la villa strangiato, closer to the heart, dreamline, witch-hunt, limelight, vital signs, natural science, 2112 album, headlong flight, xanadu, cynusx1, hemispheres album, red barchetta, yyz, passage to Bangkok, the trees, new world man, leave that thing alone, something for nothing, , working man, the analog kid, , roll the bones with rap, countdown ..there's tonnes more rush song's..WITH RUSH THE SAUCE NEVER EVER RUNS OUT..GET INTO THE RABBIT HOLE OF RUSH..IT WILL CATAPULT YOU BOTH INTO ANOTHER DIMENSION..LIFE CHANGING
You are correct about that "Van Halen Vibe" with the keyboards - Geddy and Eddie both used the Oberheim OB-CA which was a powerhouse synth for early 80's prog rock .. 😀
Geddy does vocals, bass, keyboards and plays a footboard controller for another synthesizer; his main keyboard here is an Oberheim OB-Xa synthesizer, the smaller keyboard on top is a MiniMoog + he has a Moog Taurus II bass synth he plays with a foot controller, man of many talents
I love how every Rush- Subdivisions reaction, no one ever mentions that game that was being played at the end of the video except for you guys… Polybius (the game that never really existed) how does Rush have Polybius in their video when that arcade game was supposedly banned worldwide in 1981 (the year the video came out)
You guys nailed it. The album arrived on the airwaves in 1982. This one is my fav highway song.... Smooth... And a message, too. So thankful that my college roommate owned this album.. my budget was kinda limited haha...
next... roundabout by Yes. Chris Squire on bass inspired Geddy Lee here and is considered a bass god. And Rick Wakeman in a sea of keys. Jon Anderson, Steve Howe, Bill Bruford on drums
Was in highschool when this came out, still relevant, love the subdivision voice. Yes, in my highschool days there were guys with full mustache's. Nice to see you have the same hair styles as in the video!
Neil plays so perfect to the song, that if you listened to JUST the drums, the beats wouldn't make any sense. A good drummer always plays to the requirements of the song. Several other songs have beats that would make no sense without the accompanying music - The Cars " its all I can do" Led Zeppelin " no quarter", Genesis " turn it on again", Styx " the red storm" . Weird time signatures, that change on a dime, but crafted to fit the songs
This came out in the Fall of 1982, I know I bought it uring that time, because I was in my forst fall semester of college. It sounded so great on the Amps of the time Technics, etc.
New subscriber here after seeing your Rush reactions. You found a field of deep rabbit holes, and if you're serious music fans your lives are about to change. Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, Yes, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Joseph Arthur, Genesis, Jethro Tull, Deep Purple, Hendrix, Rolling Stones... The list is very, very long. A common start to new music horizons is Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen. Please play the live version of In Your Eyes by Peter Gabriel. Have fun!
You silly boys. You just listened to the greatest rock song of all time....for a multitude of reasons. Your next Rush song HAS TO BE "Animate". You are welcome!
I heard this when it came out. The lyrics are a deep message, and easily identifiable to anyone, any time, who's felt like an outcast. I've come to believe that there is another, unspoken, message in its crafting. They too have felt that way. Have a great day!
As a Kid who grew up in a subdivision this one made me think. Before one of us hit 16 and got our DL this is very accurate. Once we hit 16 it was katy bar the door we were heading into town and going to the bars we could get into. Man was that ever a fantastic moment!!!
I saw them every year from 76-2005 In 76 they played a tiny arena in Flint Michigan. We took my dads Suburban and 7 of us went to the show. I was 17 and was supposed to be home at 12:00. At 2:30 am I pulled in and when the lights shone across the front deck my dad was standing there with his arms crossed.
In my senior year in high school, I was able to grow a mustache. I was often recruited to buy alcohol at the liquor stores that we knew didn’t card at the time. It was different back then. I probably get carded more now than I did as a teenager.
Enjoyed it. When listening to Rush and many other bands you may want to dive into the lyrics. Especially this song at the age you guys are at. You should be able to relate. And actually we still relate to it late in life.
It's so cool to see young viewers listen and react to such wonderful prog songs from the 80's. This song is from the Signals album from 1982. Thank you for sharing and for your reaction.
My personal favorite song, by my personal all time favorite band. Great reactions guys!!! I was about 14 when this song came out and could relate in a major way with the message.
If you have any doubt- watch Pearts solo in Frankfurt……you’ll make your decision if you’re actually interested in instruments and pure, solid talent…. No one can touch him. RIP- you probably don’t even know we lost him in 2020….
Maybe try something off the Power Windows record like The Big Money or Grand Designs? Keyboard era with great production/musicianship. One of my favorite Rush records.
Queen "One Vision " Official Video , Guns and Roses Paradise City, AC/DC Live at RIverplate-- Whole lot of Rosi , The Jack , Highway to hell,. Cant go wrong with any song from Riverplate its easily the greatest live crowd ever. The one show you would want to go back in time and attend.
Seen rush the first time in Marquette mi in 77 and 6 times after in and around Norfolk VA when I was in the navy last time was 86 or so always sounded great,( rip professor)
Neil the drummer wrote this , He was reflecting on his time in school being a book worm and not fitting in with the click , being an out cast , The Bass player and Guitar player were in the same situation, the kid not in the car was a cast out from the others , Also this song refers to having your life pre planned by others not being able to develop your own life ,
RUSH is the "thinking mans" rock. They hit it big in the US with their track "Working Man" back in '73 or '74. ( the rock version not the later reggae version)
Here are a few more playlist-worthy suggestions: Limelight, official music video YYZ Live In Rio Xanadu, Exit Stage Left Working Man Live In Cleveland 2112, Toronto Molson Amphitheater, 1997 Leave That Thing Alone, Toronto Molson Amphitheater, 1997 🎤 🎹 🎸 🥁 🎸 🔥 🔥 🔥
What are you using to listen with ? You need a decent sound system or good head phones If your just listening with a PC or 1 earbud you are missing out . Perts drumming on this song is incredible . And the layers between the keyboards and lead , sound amazing .
Geddy Lee plays Bass. Vocals, Keyboard and foot pedals. Often all in the same song he's doing all that. And he does it live. When you watch a live video. Jump into 1981 Xanadu Exit Stage Left at some point. If you appreciate musicianship. You will be amazed
As much as I love the original song, my favorite version of it is from their A Show of Hands live album. To me, it's the proper way that song should've been made. There's something about the cheesy keyboard sound in the original I can't get over. Either way it's an awesome song. Rush was way ahead of their time. 👌
I love your podcast. I love rush, one of my favorite another one of my favorite. I think more than rush is the band. Yes try your no disgrace by yes and then close to the edge and and I've seen all good people. Great song! This music is real progressive so maybe you might not like it. I'll send you guys some money. I don't want to join patreon but I would like to send you some money. So in your description if you got a PayPal account or something and plus you guys are so good looking should be a law against it but I'm glad there isn't 🤣
I don’t think they’ll pick up on what bands like RUSH are getting across in their songs. Bands like RUSH have a deep message in their songs, there’s just not much of that in music today.
