brookshier and summerall were terrific . these twipf are BETTER than watching the games of today , thats right , I"m an old guy 67 years old. the fifties , sixties , and seventies into the late eighties , football was great .
Jerry Ferko Jerry you are so right. I’m 56 and grew up in the 70s and loved the NFL. Most of all this show. I looked forward to it every weekend even as young as age 8. I know times change, but it’s hard to watch today’s NFL. Too much QB protection, stupid penalties, idiots hotdogging on almost every play, are just a sample. I miss muddy fields.
@Jerry Ferko - The NFL had much more respectability back then. Nowadays, it's become clownish in its pre-game shows, too many women in sports journalism has feminized football culture, every highlight or player & coach profile has hip-hop background "music," the uniforms don't seem as creative (or are sometimes too creative), the announcers' voices and grammar aren't as good, and player off-field behavior has taken a dive.
What childhood memories! I remember watching these shows every Saturday. I also remember collecting the player stamps and booklet at SUNOCO gas stations in these days. Love the music!!!
I used to watch this religiously every week. Amazing camera work and soundtrack. One thing I’ve noticed was how you rarely saw big fat players back then. No linemen with bellies hanging over their belts as you see now.
I really appreciate these great episodes from the good old days of This Week in Pro Football. The different theme music has stayed with me all these years. Brings back a lot of fond memories from my childhood and what the NFL used to be. Thank you! I look forward to more.
I have an absolute passion for NFL history. I enjoy completely seeing the evolution of the game. From its rugby roots to what it is today. And although the game has gone through so many changes. Some positive some negative. The drama remains.
Eustace Tarwater I am with you on the music. I listen to it @ work all the time. It is on RU-vid. NFL films music. Dave Volsky has done an awesome job doing this.
I attended my last NFL game 25 years ago, watched my last one on TV 15 years ago. Still enjoy watching these old programs hosted by Brookshier/Summerall before the NFL turned into a low brow circus on the field & in the stands.
just watched the st. louis cards from the wally lemm thru the charley winner years ............they gave the browns fits back then ........THE N F L ..........END OF AN ERA ....1968-1970 .........SO VERY COOL!!!!!!!
Many of us old timers don't realize the power of images from our youth and how they affect our opinions. You have to wonder, if we grew up with the current Broncos logo throughout our entire boyhood, and then recently it got switched to the old bronco inside of the big D, would we like the one from our childhood better?
@@johnjmartin5156 the old logo had a "D" which honored Denver and the bronco looked more fierce with the "smoke" coming out of its snout--I never understood the new logo at all--nothing to associate with it with Denver and the bronco doesn't even look like a bronco-more like a glorified horse
An interesting look back. In this episode I saw guys who I remember playing but hadn't thought about in years. 1973 was the last year in which the goal posts were on the goal line, for the 1974 season they were moved to the end line where they have been ever since. Also in 1974 overtime was adopted and 1973 was the last season in which a game would end as a tie at the end of regulation. The two most historical games from week 2 of 1973 were: 1)The game in Oakland where the Raiders handed the Dolphins their first loss since the 1972 Super Bowl after th e1971 season, having gone undefeated in 1972 and 2) the last NFL regular season game played at Yankee Stadium which ended as a tie between the Eagles and Giants. The Giants then played the rest of their 1973 home games at the Yale Bowl at Yale University in New Haven, CT.
I played on astroturf back in the day, hated the shit, it was like playing on a parking lot, players of that era shared a similiar opinion, it caused injuries not mention concussions
summerall was a drunken nfl shill with an acid tongue. SCREW him.may he go f himself with a nfl logo cucumber in nfl heaven....him along with that wanna be, brook-shyster...brooksheir....b.s. artist extrodinare....
Jerry Ferko loved watching him when I was a kid. I know his numbers aren’t the best but he should be in the Hall just for pure heart and determination.
Which is why the argument in defense of the self-aggrandizement of today's players that "they should be allowed to have fun" is completely fallacious. You don't need to preen for the cameras and act like a showgirl in order to have fun playing football. The whole "just having fun" line is merely an excuse to allow & enable insecure, egomaniacal, self-promoting morons the opportunity to stroke their own egos and get on SportsCenter highlights.
It’s the biggest reason I can’t take watching today’s NFL. Make the play and get your ass back to the huddle. We don’t need to see you run 20 yards downfield after a great tackle. We know you made the play you morons! If I was a head coach that crap would not be acceptable on my team.
Compare what they are doing today, with what Billy Whiteshoes used to do on the Oilers back in the day. Why do we hate what they are doing today, but enjoyed the Billy Whiteshoes gig? I think the coaching staffs are supporting it because they think that it inspires confidence and makes them play harder and better, which is their ultimate goal. I can't take it either, but this "confidence" factor is hard to argue against. Of course, when both teams are doing it on offense and defense, they cancel each other out.
San Diego and Houston had incredible uniforms. Giants had a bad year but were in most of their games in '73. This was the year the Falcons won seven straight and beat the Vikes on Monday Night Football. Saints were a bad team. Broncos had their first winning season.
3:21 Jets at Colts 7:07 Lions at Packers 10:36 Vikings at Bears 14:14 Bills at Chargers 17:28 Chiefs at Patriots 20:10 Dolphins at Raiders 23:19 Oilers at Bengals 27:00 Browns at Steelers 29:53 Falcons at Rams 32:10 Niners at Broncos 36:36 Redskins at Cardinals 40:25 Eagles at Giants
Jim Plunkett and Archie Manning were doomed by playing on bad teams. Finally, Plunkett got his chance with the Raiders, but Manning had to wait for his kids.
Hmm...very interesting tidbit on that Raiders/Dolphins contest...that day, Oakland played the game at the nearby Berkeley Stadium....however, the baseball A’s were AWAY that afternoon playing the White Sox at Comiskey Park....thus, the Coliseum was empty...wonder what happened...
Never accuse Al Davis of missing a financial opportunity. Undefeated world champs from Miami coming to town - move the game to a nearby college stadium with 20000 more seats/tickets to sell than the smaller Oakland coliseum. Imagine today’s pros being told to use the same primitive dressing rooms as the college kids? The dolphin winning streak would end that afternoon - but Miami would throttle the raiders in AFC champ game in the orange bowl a few months later.
The last game played at Yankee Stadium Sept 23 1973 Giants-Eagles 23-23 tie. Also Miami 18 game winning streak ended losing to Oakland 12-7. A historical day in the NFL that day.
The Dolphins-Raiders game was the only NFL game played at California Memorial Stadium (home of the Cal Berkeley Bears). A conflict with the Oakland A's regular season schedule forced the Raiders to move the game there.
I wouldn't cry him a river he had a 13-year career including some success in the playoffs, and towards the end when he was shoulder-to-shoulder with me in the arcade game trenches at West Chester Univ (he finished his career with the Eagles), he looked healthy.
I remember the, I think, 77 championship game between Oakland & Baltimore on the dusty, barren turf of memorial stadium. The players all covered with dirt and dust. Even the games today played on grass have all this technical drainage crap going on. The players are just as clean as they were when they started. Man how the game has changed
That double overtime thriller in Baltimore was an AFC Divisional round playoff game, the Raiders would go on to the AFC Championship game in Denver and get royally screwed by the officials on the Rob Lytle FUMBLE!
at the 26 second mark ....... ben davis ...... cleveland browns .,....brother of angela ....met him briefly at the shaker medical bldg in cleveland , ohio he was going to see dr. vic ippolito ....... browns team doctor ....i was going to see dr. ralph kovach ....... we both had knee issues .....he said good luck.....i said " u too " really nice guy ......pretty small ...tough as nails ....... had a great afro ....... great memory ........ the N F L back then ...... it was all about THE GAME ...nuff said .......
A shame seeing Unitas finish on a gawd awful Chargers team. I can't help but wonder how his last year could have been if he was on a slightly better team.
Particularly interesting in 1973 was how some teams were loaded with talent, but flopped. Chargers would win two games though they had Coy Bacon, "The Deacon," and Rossovich on that defense - and John Unitas, who early in the year, was throwing well. The 49ers had that Super O-line, Vic Washington - a speedster at halfback, Brodie, and a slew of great defensive players, especially at linebacker, yet slumped to 5-9. Cardinals had some tough defensive dudes, but gave up 20 points a game and went 4-9-1. That would change and compliment that unreal offense in the next year. First year for Falcons in white cleats. Liked the Skins' uniforms, but the spear and arrow helmets were better. Denver and the Chargers togged out in classics. And, tough year for the Browns because the Steelers would own them from herein.
Pretty much every team will have talent here and there. The difference is for that time the great teams, Miami, Minnesota, Oakland, Dallas etc. knew best how to put everything together. It also speaks of the great coaching that each of those teams had. You think the Steelers dominance of the Browns in that era was something. During the whole decade of the 1970's Miami would beat Buffalo in every game. Happy 100 seasons
Hey G.L. WEIGHT TRAINING FOR QB'S BACK THEN WASNT SOMETHING THAT WAS REALLY SUGGESTED BACK THEN FOR QB ..NAMATH COULD'VE BENEFITED LOTS FRO. WEIGHT TRAINING BUT IN NEW YORK AFTER SUPER BOWL 3 WIN AND BEING IN THE BIGGEST.MOST ENTERTAINMENT CITY ..HE HAD IT ALL LADIES NIGHTCLUBS FUR COATS ..WHITE SHOES HE WAS THE FIRST TO WEAR WHITE CLEATS..IM SURE IF YOU DUG DEEPER YOU CAN FIND OUT IF HE EVEN PRACTICED FOR A FULL WEEK ..HE DID COMMERCIAL HE HAD A TV SHOW..STERIODS WASNT IN FOOTBALL YET AND HARD DRUGS WASNT EITHER ..ALCOHOL AND WEED ..THEN MID SEVENTIES LSD IN THE LATE 70'S EARLY 80'S IT WAS COCAINE AND STEROIDS..
big thing i notice is how the players act after a score or big play. you dont have the whole team running in the end zone acting like fools and show offs like they do today. they should be penalized for that crap. but i guess thats how the nfl has to let them act. a bunch of selfish primadonna's they have playing these days
HAHAHAHA..I have too agree, but back in the late 60's and through the 70's...the word PROFESSIONAL ment something to the players and they were taught not to be selfish..or else they would get fined by team or cheap shotted by the likes of dick Butkis who took that as showboating..even 5he coaches have changed ..Vince Lombardi wouldnt tolerate any nonsense BEHAVIOR such as dancing and the whole team running down the other end of the field after a turnover.! All has changed once Billy white shoes johnson started his end zone celebration in the mid 70'S AND IT HAS JUST GONE WAY TOO FAR HIGH STEPPING DION SANDERS ICKY WOODS ICKY SHUFFLE WASHINGTON REDSKIN FUN BUNCH ROGER GOODELL FOLDED AND GAVE IN TOO THE CELEBRATION STUFF ..I LIKE CAM NEWTON LOCATING A YOUNG FAN AND MAKING THAT KIDS SUNDAY EVENING THAT MUCH BETTER AFTER DAD DROPS 300.00 AND UP FOR TICKETS PARKING FOOD AND DRINKS..PLAYERS FORGET,, BUT FANS ARE MORE SERIOUS ABOUT THERE TEAM AND THE GAMES THAT ITS GETTING MORE PERSONAL WITH COMMEMTS AND ACTION THAT AREN'T GOOD FOR FOOTBALL..JIM BROWN WAS A PRO ..TOUCHDOWN HAND THE BALL TO THE REF BARRY SANDERS HAND THE BALL TOO THE REF..AND THE BIGGEST THING IS THE AMOUNT OF MONEY THESE GUYS ARE GETTING PAID ..AND TELLING NFL TEAMS NOT TO DRAFT THEM..WE CAN GO ON AND ON..BUT IT JUST SHOWS HOW THE GAME HAS CHANGED AND THE PLAYERS ARE BIGGER FASTER STRONGER AND MORE AND MORE TALENTED ..
Johnny U didn't really play for the Chargers: just enough to get his 40,000 yards. The Colts should have given him this opportunity. Should have reached 300 TDs.
Almost all of them. Just because they dont look like modern players it has zero to do with their athletic make up or abilities. Give these guys the salaries, training abd diet methods, equipment and play style, youd get similar results
@@Grandizer8989 he wouldnt be 245 today. Hed be more like 265 and very highly consitioned and cut. The players today wouldnt be as large if they went back in time and were born in 1950
Man, when i look at some of those RIDICULOUS interceptions, i begin to wonder if even then, NFL was suspect/rigged. I mean look at them. No teammate anywhere near the passing lane/zone!!!!!!
