Had a stage two upgrade done on my Road King last year and was given the option of horse power or torque. Went for the torque , very happy !

Harleys engines don't rev high enough for horsepower to exceed their peak torque.

5252rpm is also the point at which torque curve and horsepower curve will intersect on a dyno graph.

I was wondering if someone would bring this up. 👍🏼

It would be interesting to extend your companisons to electric motorbikes. They tend to have flatter torque curves until they reach a speed where the motor needs more current than the battery and high voltage cables can supply, so torque drops off at high speeds. Amazing acceleration at low speeds, less when overtaking on motorways. Although the mode you select affects the torque/power balance just like gear selection affects bikes with gears.

I generally like your content but you’ve completely missed the boat on this one. Torque is one of the factors to determine HP as you showed the equation. Beyond that torque is little more than misleading marketing numbers. You don’t feel torque. Think about this, you can have torque at zero RPM (electric motors). How’s that feel? HP is what’s useful for motorcycles.

For most folks street riding torque is the most important number. That said, how much do you really need? I'm perfectly happy with my 2007 Ultra with mid 90s torque and HP. I don't need the fastest bike on the road and it is pretty darn comfortable. Happy New Year and keep the good stuff coming Kevin.

Need and want are two different things. I don’t need the 163 lb-ft that my Rocket III has, but I want it to have fun!

Important to note torque is absolute. Horsepower is a theory, based on math, once torque is known.

No. Your engine burns gas. That creates power whether you are at 2000 rpm or 20000 rpm. Torque is a component of power in a rotating system. RPM is the other component. If one bike makes more torque at low rpm than another, it is because it is making more power at that low RPM than the other. A Dyno measures power at the rear wheel. The peak torque value you see is calculated from the rear wheel power. It is then attributed to the torque at the engine's crank. It's an approximation. If you have to pull a fat woman up a hill, you might be interested in the torque at the rear wheel. That is created by your gear box. Power to your rear tire is independent of the gear you select. Speed/torque (the two components of rotational power) are completely dependent on the gear you select. You want more torque at the expense of less speed, you select first gear. If you want more speed at the expensive of torque, select sixth gear. The marketing numbers you see from manufacturers are PEAK values. Has nothing to do with the TOTAL power over the rev range of the engine. Hope this helps. It rarely does. Silly myths die hard.

I can’t figure out why trucking companies don’t use cheaper, lighter (more payload) 400hp/5000rpm pickup truck engines instead of those 500hp/1500 rpm truck engines because torque has nothing to do with the equation…

At exactly 5252 RPMs, torque and horsepower are *identical* . Hence, if your motorcycle engine redlines before 5252 RPMs: you will be a torque fanboi. If your motorcycle can exceed 5252 RPMs: you are going to be a horsepower fanboi.

I am a Moto Guzzi owner, have owned a total of three and currently two. Guzzis tend to have a good balance of torque and horsepower making very pleasant to ride.

Same with my yamaha raider, I can beat almost any sport bike under or equal to 1000cc till 60mph from the stop light. Torque is addictive :)

I have an 05 XLC sportster that I had bored out to 1250, it has a good S and S carb and the bikevwas built on a Wednesday in Milwaukee. Off a red light it will flat go if I get after it and I have dusted a few big ugly harleys.

The reason the Big cc bike accelerated faster of the line is because it had more horsepower. Power is king. Power is the capability to perform work per time. Torque at the wheel is engine torque times gear ratio. More power can generate more torque by gearing. The bike with the highest power at a given speed and a given rpm will accelerate the fastest. Shift down => more rpm => more power => more torque at the wheel. (Unless over reving into a rpm range where power drops) The gearbox is the extremely important, often ignored variable when discussing hp vs tq. The never ending confusion and misunderstanding of such a basic fact is surprising.

5:30 That Kawasaki ZX-6R, with its puny torque numbers, will smoke most of the other bikes on that list off the line because of its horsepower (0-60mph in 3.0 seconds, and quarter mile in 10.6 seconds). The Ducati and BMW same with their high horsepower numbers.

You used to have a trail 125 you don’t have that anymore that’s very sad. Well I have the regular cub version and I’ve been driving the heck out of that.

I ride a 2015 Triumph Rocket 3 Touring. I have done a few mods so I am pushing much more power than is necessary. The weight and power makes it a ideal for interstate traveling. I think it is important to realize machines in the class of the Rocket are not for the novice rider. If you do not understand and practice the friction zone, reverse steering, and how to manage the weight and torque of the bike like this it will kill you. It demands respect. Probably one of the reasons I am a fan of MCrider. You are never to old or experienced to learn something new. Ride safe.

Cool my yamaha Raider has 143hp, 130 torque x 5800rpm / 5252 = 143HP, but to the wheel on dyno 105hp :)

HP, at the wheel, is the metric I prefer to focus on too -- that is the one number that takes into account the engine specs and transmission and gearing, and losses in the rest of the drive train. If it isn't making it to the wheel then it doesn't matter to me.

It sounds like torque tells you how fast you can change your speed from a stand still or a low speed, and horsepower will tell you how fast you can change your speed at a highway speed.
