I think The Beatles' covers of "Long Tall Sally" and "Rock And Roll Music" are right up there with "Twist And Shout".

along with Please Mr Postman, Roll Over Beethoven, Rock & Roll Music, The Beatles had the knack to take a cover track and make it their own. If you were fortunate to have the Beatles cover your song, be prepared to be out done!

One of the things I love most about the whole "Please Please Me" album is the spontaneous feel of it - and part of the reason for that feel was the rapid-fire way they made the bulk of the album. Everything sounds unified because they made most of it in one go - same instruments, same atmosphere, same mood in the room. It was done so quickly, there was no time for re-thinking or second-guessing - just wham, bang, we're done. "Twist and Shout" specifically is so amazing precisely because of the sheer rawness of the vocal sound. A cleaner vocal would wreck the effect. "Twist and Shout" almost sounds like the band was finishing up a long, punishing gig somewhere and are ready to collapse. A great, great record.

I love the album, particularly as I know I’m not listening to the most famous band in the world, but a fantastic pub and club band. The album captures the feel of that time. People often forget that the bulk of the album was recorded a couple of weeks after a Hamburg stint, and a couple of days before another Cavern gig.

I think Lennon proved in some live recordings he could get that raw quality to his voice but add more range when his voice wasn’t shredded. That said it’s an amazing recoding without a doubt, and that LP is always in my top 3 Beatles records. This was basically their live set at the time and if you’ve been in a band that plays a set like that (meaning you’re not Jack White or in Jazz basically lol) you’ve played those tunes countless times. The little two track they recorded on and production made this album have almost a live feel… like you said great record! Cheers

My best friend taped "Twist and Shout" off Greek radio in 1989 (along with other PPM tracks on what must have been a PPM radio show) and when I first heard it I thought "What the heck, this sounds out of this world"!!! It had a crispness in sound that I hadn't heard in any other song before!!! To this day, the parent album holds a very special place in my heart for the simplicity, rawness, enthusiasm it emits!! Also, it sounds like a continuation of the Star Club tapes, which it actually was!!! Cheers Andrew!! P.S. (I Love You): Yes it was the Beatles who taught me English, was there ever any doubt?

I remember it was used in Ferris Buehler's Day Off and Capitol re-released the single and it made the American top 40 all over again. Kids hearing it for the first time wanted that song from the movie. It set a record for the longest time between top 40 appearances for the same record.

I'm of 2 minds on this. 1) John is correct in his statement that he could sing it better than the released version. His vocal on the 1964 Melbourne film is phenomenal. His vocals on Money, Slowdown and Rock and Roll Music on record, are better (IMHO) but...2) There is an intangible that T A S has over the other 3 songs I mentioned. That is how John, the ailing and vocally spent leader of the Beatles, carries the band on his shoulders over the finish line. Please Please Me w/o T A S is an inferior album. Had Hold Me Tight, Besame Mucho or The One After 909 been in it's place, I believe would've lowered the bar on the entire album. Twist and Shout is the perfect song for it's place on the album and its place in music history. For it is the encore to their first act. An act we've loved for all these years. Another great episode Andrew. Thank you for all you do for us Beatles fans around the world. RNB

Having grown up with this album I contend that having Anna as the opening track is brilliant. It stands in complimentary contrast to the opening track on Beatlemania!, "It won't Be Long", and really sets an interesting mood, which builds toward She Loves You throughout the album. One of the rarest Beatles albums is a later 1983 pressing of Twist And Shout which came out on translucent brown vinyl. To date only three copies have been documented. I'm fortunate enough to have one of those.

Thanks for more Canadian love. It's great to hear you mention Smith Falls, which is a quaint little town near Ottawa. We used to frequent it because it had one of the only Pizza Delight franchises in Eastern Ontario (a restaurant from my native Atlantic Canada). Hearing that Beatles records were printed there is very cool. I wonder if the plates are still there, or in somebody's attic? I remember seeing the Twist and Shout record a in stores when I was a kid. I got really interested in the Beatles when John died because suddenly the Beatles were all over the media again. I was 10 years old and started buying Beatles vinyl. I was later confused with the CDs came out and Twist and Shout wasn't there because it was Canadian-only. Another well-researched and detailed vid!

My impression as a teenager in Canada at the time was that 'Twist and Shout' was 'retro', the Isley Brothers version still being relatively fresh in many people's minds. The attraction of The Beatles in late 1963 / early 1964 (in North America at least) was their new sound and their own songs, many of which were already more sophisticated than most pop music of the time. We didn't really get The Beatles until they were almost over their cover song / club band era, and a cover of a simple, raucous, American, 'twist' song seemed out of step with the image we had of them as this exciting new English (!) band. The energy of the song though was impossible to ignore, and John's vocal was stunning. I have a clear memory of hearing it one morning in the winter of 1964 before going to school, and despite having heard it many times before suddenly being aware of what a great performance it was. So while it seemed out of step with who The Beatles were (or who we wanted them to be) it was impossible to ignore. And now of course it's one of my favourites. 🙂

Quite possibly the greatest cover version ever recorded.... In one take remember after a 14 hour marathon recoding session!! Astonishing vocal by John who as you said in later years actually criticised his singing!! Timeless & as far as I'm concerned it is a Beatles song 🎵

Great video, I love the focus on a particular song rather than an album for a change. Hope you keep this up and work your way through their singles catalogue. Incidentally this was the first Beatles single I bought in about 1983/4. I went to Pop Inn Records, Chelmsford, UK (a real goldmine back in the day! ) and asked for Twist and Shout not realising then it had never been released as a single. The guy said no problem and popped a 7" in a bag and off I went home. I was so disappointed when I got and home and found out he had given me 'Back In The USSR' by mistake!!! 🤣🤣🤣 Anyway, as we all know it was the B side of that 1976 single (vocals on one channel and instruments on the other). Ended up getting all my Beatles singles from that shop from Love Me Do to Let It Be and even Yesterday, USSR, SPLHCB and the Movie Medley. Still got them all today 👍

I always loved this song. My memories of it is listening to the single on the Tollie label on my mom’s record player, over and over again; got hooked on the Beatles at a very young age. And I would flip it over and listen to There’s a Place on the b-side, which I really liked too. That’s cool that you showed an image of that 45 in this video; really brought back memories. Years back, I purchased the Twist and Shout EP on eBay from England. Now you have me curious; I have never listened to it, but now that you say it sounds really good at 45, I’ll have to give it a spin

Great review Andrew!! I have the original 1963 Australian "Twist & Shout" EP. John Lennon was always very hard to understand when he made certain comments about the Beatles songs, performances, vocals etc. His single tracked performance on this song is OUTSTANDING. A lot of his other early vocal performances were double tracked - & this gave the impression of more power & richness. He certainly could not have sung this better. Tiger.

Everything started for me with this EP and particularly "Twist And Shout"... 1991 french little boy... I was 8 years old with a blue tennis racket as a guitar, I found this 45rpm at the bottom of a closet... offered to my mother in 1963/64 by her English school pen pal... she didn't particularly like it but her son almost 30 years later without understanding any of the words understood everything else. I have since then nice pieces in my collection but this EP is my precious one... and my English level has significantly improved.

Twist and Shout is definitely one of the Beatles songs I most identify with. My sister, who is 10 years older than me, was 14 when the Beatles hit here in Canada. The Twist and Shout single was the first Beatles record she bought. Needless to say, it got played over and over....and over again for years, first by her, and the by me. That poor record is in pretty sad shape today as you can well imagine. I collected all the Canadian singles and albums several years ago (including the Twist and Shout album) so I've got a nice 'new' clean pressing of the single. I've only played it a few times and is now safely framed and hanging on my Beatles Record wall. My T&S album is also in very good condition. You're right, it's a great sounding album! One thing I'll mention about the single...when it was pressed the centre hole was just slightly off centre with regards to the grooves. It's not noticeable until the very end of the song but the last chord has a very real wow wow to it. It's present on our copy from 1964 and also the other one I bought years later. Obviously they were pressed at the same time so they both have that flaw. There's just a bit of Twist and Shout trivia for you. Great video as usual!

I discovered my dads copy of the EP at a very early age. Not only was the title track the most exciting thing I’d heard, the eclectic mix of the three other songs made the whole thing work as a micro-LP with the melancholy of Taste of Honey, the joy of Do You Want to Know a Secret and the introspection of There’s a Place. The EP works as a summary of forthcoming attractions in the Beatles career.

"Twist and Shout" arguably is what got me hooked on The Beatles as a 12-year-old in the summer of 1987. There was a custom-made music video for the song, composed of bits from the Beatles cartoon, and MTV played this thing INCESSANTLY. It was driving my brother (almost 10 years my senior) up the wall BIG TIME. So...because I was the bratty little brother, I went to the public library and checked out some Beatles albums: Introducing The Beatles (counterfeit with the brown border), The Early Beatles (I didn't realize they're essentially the same album -- I was specifically targeting stuff that had "Twist and Shout" so I could listen and my brother would hear it and get annoyed!), Rock and Roll Music Vol. 2 (that weird European pressing), and Reel Music (a compilation I feel gets VERY unfairly vilified). This was right around the time Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band came out on CD, and my brother -- who isn't a Beatles fan -- bought the CD because he felt it was an album he should own, given its importance in music history. But anyway, I played those albums and...instead of annoying my brother, they got me hooked. 35 years later I'm still an obsessive fan. I particularly remember the guitar riff from "Anna" kind of hypnotizing me, and being crabbed by the "bop shoo-wop" backing vocals of "Boys." Unfortunately, when "Twist and Shout" came up, absolutely ZERO effect on my brother. Turns out it wasn't the *song* that bothered him, but MTV's overplaying of the *video*.

Another well researched and accurate episode for one of the three Canadian releases. I've purchased multiple repops of TWIST & SHOUT strictly for the cover art because, as you have pointed out, it is sonically identical to the EMI recordings which I use for my playlists. Here in Canada there was issued a magazine which I presume was likely produced independently from the BEATLEMANIA album. Its front cover used the picture and the quotes from the album front cover, and the book itself contained biographies and various information about the band. I long ago lost my copy of this magazine and the only thing that I can remember from the various articles contained within is a bio piece on George that reported he had the longest hair -- which the article stated that he pronounced as "hur" making me wonder if this magazine used Canadian created content rather than containing reprinted versions of standard UK fan biographies. Sound familiar?

Another great video. I believe Twist and Shout was the only cover song the Beatles recorded that charted in the US. The BBC, Star Club and other early live recordings show what a great live band they were and their amazing ability to pick the right songs to cover (OK, maybe not Mr. Moonlight). Unfortunately, they couldn’t show their live performance skill once the chaos of Beatlemania hit. They performed live so much more before they were famous that I believe Pete Best performed live as a Beatle more than Ringo Starr did. Andrew, now that you are creating videos for individual Beatle songs we won’t have to worry about you running out of material for a while! Yea!

I agree, as I'm sure many do, that Twist and Shout is one if their best cover recordings. It captured a moment in time at the end of that long day in the studio when Lennon's raw vocal chords lasted just long enough to get a decent take. The state of which just adds to the overall result superbly, despite what John may have said a decade later.

When Lennon looked back on The Beatles live in the 1970's I do wonder how much he needed to big up his solo career at the time and how much he might have been experiencing from a distorted memory, what with so many legal issues around the band still live and ongoing at the time. I do not take the words of 1970's Lennon taking about The Beatles at their face value. But thank you for the 'Lennon stripping to the waist' detail, there is a long and minor history of performers stripping in the studio to give their best vocal, which feeds into English prudery and rock and roll as a transgressive art form.

Why don't you make a vote about the covers they recorded and make a video of the winner? 🤣 Thanks once again for the beautiful video! 😊

A fine conclusion to the Canadian Beatles story, and I love the extra tidbit about the Flanders & Swann LP, a comedy classic that I've loved ever since I was a kid. I recently found a nice copy on the U.S. Angel label in a local thrift shop, which is a fine replacement for my worn played-since-childhood copy. I highly recommend having a look at the Capitol 6000 Series website for a look at some truly unique items from the Great White North. I have many of the Dave Clark Five LPs in the series, but am still looking for the Yardbirds' Over Under Sideways Down, one of the most collectible of the whole run (along with the mono Piper at the Gates of Dawn by Pink Floyd).

I agree about it being one of their best covers. And the fact that it was a last minute suggestion is just one more head shaking factoid in their amazing story. What a perfect song to end their first album. John of course could be very critical about his voice. (!) But I can’t imagine him outdoing that vocal. For me, not only does it make a great album closer but it also was an amazing concert opener and the decision to shorten it later for live performances and go straight into the solo and “aah” part seemed to be another perfect choice. It may have been done to not overwork John’s voice but it worked so well that for me that opening to the Hollywood Bowl album with the screaming and the group kicking in and the “aahs” giving way to “well shake it up baby now” is one of their most exciting moments on record and a key moment of Beatlemania.

John's singing on Twist and Shout is fabulous and I wouldn't want to replace it with a "better" version. 10:13 Songs, Pictures and Stories was the first Beatle album that I bought new with my own money. Nice to see it pictured in the video. It's a little different than I had remembered. I thought that the portraits were on the gatefold and that it was just a special cover for the Introducing album. My family already had a copy of the US Second Album that my mom had bought for my sisters and me. Of course, my dad couldn't stand them.

Fantastic song! My favourite part is McCartney's barely audible "yeah!" at 2min 27secs when he realises they have nailed the song in one take.

'Twist and Shout' I've never liked as a composition. Just read the lyrics alone without music, and you wonder how in the world this ever worked it's way into a song. The Beatles attitude and performance of it however, makes it something magical. It just shows what a little inspiration, some worn in musicianship, can make what I call a mediocre song into some kind of 'hysteria' and all of a sudden there's a blanket of fairy dust and the song is alive! It's probably the greatest live performance on record by The Beatles.

The Isley Brothers version is fantastic. It was also played in F versus the Beatles’ version in D, a minor third higher Ronald Isley was one of the greatest singers who ever lived. He and his brothers had hits for at least 4 decades. They had some guy playing guitar in their band named Jimi something 😐. One of their best songs was Who’s That Lady with younger brother Ernie playing some amazing Hendrix-y guitar. He had been taught by the man himself! At any rate John sang it pretty well but he was never gonna come close to Ron!

My pressing of the Twist and Shout LP is the mono/stereo version, a variation I wasn't aware of. I just happened to buy it when I was looking for the first three Canadian albums.

I never owned a copy of this until the mid 80s when it was put out as a single to accompany the cinematic release of Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

I became a Beatles fan at Christmas 1963 and in the beginning of 1964 bought a magazine - Meet the Beatles - which introduced the four members. Presenting John Lennon it said that his singing in Twist and Shout always broke (or ruined, which was the way I read it) his voice. Later in 1964 we bought the Norwegian single version of Twist and Shout (with Boys on th flip side) and I was completely gob smacked. It is grrreat and fab and gear, but I also think that Money, Long Tall Sally, Rock and Roll Music, Kansas City plus Bad Boy do the almost same trick.

your videos about the Canadian albums are fantastic. it's funny that I don't remember ever seeing Twist and Shout in US stores, but I have seen the other 2. thank you for mentioning their Vee Jay albums. I found a copy of Introducing The Beatles in a big grocery chain store ( of all places ) in Virginia, around 1978 or '79. I can't remember the low price that I paid for it, and it turned out to be mediocre sounding bootleg.

I first heard twist and shout with the Isley brothers version on the radio on my favorite radio station that used to be on 97.1 Kissin FM I haven’t heard the original version, until I bought the Phil Spector anthology at three CD set. I heard the Beatles version of Twist and Shout when I bought the Beatles please please me back in 1987 back then I heard it only in mono but when I bought the 2009 box sets the stereo and mono versions I loved hearing the stereo and mono mixes. I think Twist and Shout The Beatles cover is one of the best ever and I love all their cover versions including money that’s what I want Long tall Sally what a great photo from Paul McCartney and rock ‘n’ roll music and slow down. I even love dizzy Miss Lizzy that’s a great song whether from the help album or recorded live at the Hollywood bowl.

I would say you have one of the best Chanels on RU-vid. Will you also be doing Beatles solo project?? And or I'd love to see something on Beatles Australian 7" singles. Is it true that a lot of mixes of the Beatles 7" singles are unique or are edited Slightly different?

I have both the Twist and Shout EP. and the Long Tall Sally EP. I believe that Long Tall Sally was also recorded in one take and though I like them both and think they both sound fantastic, I think that Long Tall Sally has the edge. Both show how fantastic they must have been live. Ha, can I throw in 'Till There Was You from The Music Man film. :-)

One thing,Andrew-Beatlemania mono copies were NOT stereo mixdowns.Meet The Beatles used stereo mixdowns for the mono of that, but Canadian Capitol did receive a EMI tape with the same true mono mixes as on the Parlophone. In fact, the '76 orange label had the same mastering plate as all issues before that, starting the original colorband in Dec.'63.I had both the '63 colorband(3 copies, including the error"6 band" Side 2 copy)and an orange label.(both monos)

I wish you would have talked about Twist and Shout as a single on the US Capitol starline green/yellow swirl label from 1965. I think it sounds great especially if you like hearing it played at 45 rpm.

To me this song is overplayed and pretty much ripped to the core. It’s actually one of the very very very few Beatles recordings I’ve heard in my lifetime on standard radio(not counting Beatles countdown specials or XM stations of course) in Macomb Michigan, along with Revolution. I personally prefer some other covers they did, but I understand the importance of the track. Now I might actually like the recording the most I’ve ever had in my 13 or so years of being obsessed with The Beatles. Every time I hear the song, I hear a ‘yeah’ at the last note of the song. I’m sure it’s because they are glad to finish recording the album in a single day. It’s the perfect closer to their debut album.

Speaking of EPs... Andrew would you ever do a video on the series of Mexican EPs released in the early 70s which highlighted exclusively George songs and a series with Ringo vocals? I'm interested in the process they went through with track selection, as I know some of the Beatles themselves were involved with the choices, as they were with the Red & Blue LPs.
