In my experience, people love to see things as more black and white than they are. It’s just easier. On a site such as Twitter where you only have 280 characters to explain your thoughts, that kind of simplification is commonplace. Unfortunately, easier doesn’t mean better, and that kind of thinking helps nobody.

Taika Waititi actually did a great job with Jojo Rabbit. He humanized the people who were indoctrinated into naziism, not the indoctrinators. He actively chose to play Hitler because he found it fun to know that Hitler would’ve been furious about a man of Māori and Jewish descent portraying him in a film. Not to mention, it’s a PG-13 movie that chose to use it’s one “fuck” in the line “Fuck you, Hitler” before Hitler gets fucking kicked out a window. Anyone who thinks Jojo Rabbit promotes Naziism clearly hasn’t actually watched the movie, and doesn’t know anything about the guy who made it.

I can't speak to this specific movie since I haven't watched it before, but I recently found out that, for example, in marvel movies they'll make the military seem incompetent and stupid when in fact they're not. Like the military knows what they're doing when they do bad things, so making them seem like they're incompetent makes it seem like the bad things they do are by accident and it minimizes those things and makes it seem like the problem is specific dumb people rather than a systemic issue! So it's a different form of military propaganda! Again, I didn't watch Jojo Rabbit so I can't agree or disagree with whatever people are saying on Twitter, but this is just something interesting that I learned that's like tangentially related to one specific part of your comment😁

Here’s my guide to actually making twitter (somewhat) enjoyable. -Have a private account with your friends/acquaintances following it with their own private accounts. Not having strangers be able to nickpick your tweets cuts down on useless arguing. -Block every single account that promotes a tweet to you. I am not joking. This way they slowly run out of possible ads to show you and therefore you encounter them less -Set your feed to chronological order. This pretty much gets rid of the random topic tweets. -Use the block and mute features to your advantage. See someone you fully disagree with and/or think is annoying? Just go ahead and block them. You can also mute words related to discourse you usually get fed. That’s p much it! Enjoy your less hellhole-ey twitter.

twitter can unite itself against a genuinely vile or bad thing sometimes, and that's good. but then it also tends to get itself really angry and irrational over the smallest things that aren't worth getting that angry about and they misplace their anger, so then a lot of innocent people get caught in the crossfire. it's important to recognise the times when twitter does something actually good because that's rare.

I saw Taika's name trending just today with the words "anti-black". I panicked, clicked, scrolled... and only like one tweet mentioned him being anti black (it was about Reservation Dogs, a show he helps write that features a native - but not black natives, apparently - cast.) The rest just had his name. I'm guessing people defended him more than attacked him and that's what got that trending, as well as the fact that his name is already trending for all the reasons you mentioned, but the fact that Twitter is so good at causing "discourse" that it made me believe for half a second Taika was being cancelled for being racist is pretty telling. So yeah, Twitter can be difficult, and dangerous, but I've also gotten into some pretty amazing communities with amazing artists and talents, so I can't bash the whole app. Side note that I love Taika's work. I loved WWDITS, JoJo, and OFMD, and I can't wait to see him do more things.
@april_showers04

Lol this comment made me go back to Twitter down a spiral and, yeah, he's said some stuff in the past that could be construed as "anti black." That's not really the point of the video, so I won't go too deep into it, though I kinda wanna mention here I'm biracial lol. Anyways, I personally find Twitter really good at presenting arguments with the least nuance possible, and making it seem like certain groups of people have more power, say or are larger than they really are. So that's my main issue with it, but the fanart is good so I suppose it cancels out lmfao

I'm not on Twitter, but there has been some well deserved conversation on Tumblr about how OFMD is kind of pulling a Hamilton in its refusal to explicitly explore and indict the fact that both Stede Bonnet and Blackbeard were slave traders, especially with how easily the show skewers colonialism in other ways, and it's a good conversation to have, but one that's getting drowned out on other apps by dismissals of criticism of the show as homophobic.

I think there is definitely good criticism in the fact they didn’t have any mixed characters in reservation dogs (not any that I know of at least) as there is a huge population of mixed indigenous kids who are involved in more cultures then just one… but if you are only talking about it because you want to hate on a creator and you know that’s a subject people will agree on about them… you don’t actually care about the subject you just want to hate on someone with the shield of “criticism”
@solarmoth4628

Imagine- I have issues with reservation dogs in the way that they use black culture in the show that other minorities often do, to separate themselves from stereotypes of their culture while using and perpetuating stereotypes about black culture to be “cool”. And one of the rappers/actors would regularly use the n word in real life. It is pretty anti-black to do that in the absence of afro-native writers of characters on the show. I’m paraphrasing legitimate criticisms from black and afro-natives. I definitely agree that criticism shouldn’t be used just to criticize Taika. It’s not like Taika is even the only or main writer of the show?
@apriljk6557
@apriljk6557 2 года назад
@@solarmoth4628 yeah, no they're characters from a specific area and while there are afro native people that exist, they aren't such a huge demographic on reservations that it demands a whole character from go. I deleted twitter today because I realized I didn't like how condescending everyone on it was. One day, everyone decides they hate [media/person] (I'm talking about people who are being hated on because they're 'cringe', not people who have done really bad things) and then the entire website spends a few days dunking on said [media/person]. It's exhausting and prevents any nuance. It felt like an echo chamber of the same few condescending takes. I always felt drained going on twitter. Edit: The sudden flip against Jojo Rabbit was such a shock for me. That movie was great and talked about a topic that is often overlooked when it comes to WWII and how people brainwash their children with hateful ideologies. Then everyone on twitter said it was 'bad actually' because it puts na**s in a good light? That it was "cringe"? These "critiques" came out of nowhere. I'd get it if people pointed out actual flaws in the movie because there are flaws and it's valid to point them out, but they just decided it was bad all of a sudden because they didn't understand it.

It took me a while to come to terms with how it was affecting me because I loved the dopamine rush of getting likes and retweets. What finally made me let go was seeing this weird clique of people who I happened to follow behave like having 3000 followers meant their opinions were gold. They would disagree with someone to just disagree only to retweet friends who had the opinion of the other person they argued with. It just felt like I was back at school, wrapped up in things that didn't matter once I left so that's what I did. I've curated my feed for news, activism, technology, art and friends since 09. it's a well oiled machine and even tho i refuse to follow the news incessantly, i know for a fact that my feed will give me all the details and nuances that i need to follow a topic that im not well versed in. twitter has taught me so much i cannot imagine a world without it. and it's not by mistake that I won't see the cesspool unless i look for it. i made it that way. i had friends that were hackers, (oxford comma) and trolls back in '09-'10. I've never EVER had a single argument w an actual account, human or an entity. arguments on twitter are not arguments. in reality they're contrived conflicts that would not exist irl, without the comical pause of the "let's debate this to shit" nature. if twitter arguments happen to you irl, run from that person. run far and away. you're being put in distress for no reason.

When i was really active on kpop twitter we organized ourselves to identify accounts that actively hated and wanted to create negative discourse around our fave groups and spread the message to NOT interact with the tweets or accounts, rather to just report them (several times if needed) and block them. However, discourse grew and took over the platform quickly :/

Honestly when I first joined Twitter in 2020, I thought it was gonna be terrible bc of how many times I've heard people call it a "hellsite", but honestly it mostly depends on what you're doing and who you're following. I love Twitter. Mainly because I have curated my feed to just retro video games. I'm blissfully unaware of small rumblings like minor beefs between creators unless someone in RU-vid talks about it. Also I agree. No one person should own Twitter. Elon says that he can fix it, but he also gave us the hyperloop which is essentially an expensive proprietary underground highway. With traffic.

Another component of Twitter is that, because it's set up the way it is, it cultivates a certain kind of user. That user being someone who is highly opinionated, terminally online, and has a sense of being holier-than-thou - as the algorithm rewards users who engage in topics and make the best snappy tweet with unfathomable amounts of attention. I used Twitter for about 4 - 5 months and, in that time, I witnessed some of the dumbest stuff imaginable because of this.

As a Disney fan and Nintendo fan, there are people who are against those fanbase and think we don't criticize the companies whenever they do something bad even we actually do. It's weird that there is an anti-Disney and anti-Nintendo when there is a Disney fanbase and Nintendo fanbase there.

weird coincidence, I also ditched basically all my social media except I couldn't give up Twitter. I don't even really use it much, I just _like_ it for some reason. it really is bad but I genuinely have been trying to only engage in arguments where I try to change people's minds person to person, rather than just dunking/owning people. as far as how their ownership shapes their policy -- this comes up a lot in my corner of Twitter (anti-f@sh research) but a huge part of the problem with the platform is that they are extremely right wing, lol. the head of Twitter security, Vijaya, went on Joe Rogan with Jack (founder and current owner) and Tim _goshdang_ Pool (currently trending bc he is not coping with his hair loss particularly well, poor lil racist) which tells you enough, but on top of that, Vijaya got caught on a hot mic openly saying they'd ban "antifa accounts" for Tim Pool which is just. yeah. explains why Andy ngo is still around!!!

The longest friendship I’ve ever had (around 11 years) ended this week because of something I reposted on Instagram. We’ve never even had so much as a verbal disagreement before (partially due to my own silence around his more questionable beliefs), and yet he resorted to personal insults and curse words when I tried to defend myself with facts and statistics. I apologized for offending him and told him that nothing would change the fact that I would always be there for him in the future, to which he left me on read and blocked me on all of my socials, which is the only way we communicate since we live in different states. He was the only person I’ve ever opened up to emotionally about my depression, sexuality, and trauma besides my girlfriend and brother, but the second I disagreed with him politically he tossed me aside like I was nothing to him (which he made sure to tell me I was). I never would have guessed he’d talk to me that way in a million years, and I certainly wouldn’t have guessed our friendship would end the way it did. I don’t care about his politics, I just want my friend back.

Nicely timed video because i have a bad day and i'm on my twitter short break, thank you! Things i can do for better experiences are engage on things you love, less-discourse heavy accounts. Block things you don't like, there'll be slipped up sometimes but i'm just shrugged it off and doing real-life stuffs no need to be stressed when you found one or two bad opinions. I'm also decrease my time on twitter, and voila, i missed a lot of bad stuffs happened. Just turn on the notification for accounts like news, etc. and access twitter when their notifications pop-up. On twitter only for pretty arts and game updates. For news, i got it from youtube and other news portal so pretty much i wont be missed a lot when i have less time on twitter. (4 am here and i made several typos)

Great video! I’m glad you’re still able to find the good side of Twitter. I haven’t gone on in months, and I’ve never been happier. Personally for me, I would just get angry every time I used it, and it made me super reactionary. Any opinion that didn’t align with my viewpoint set me off. My social anxiety was the only thing holding me back from getting into fights lmao. Since being off it, I feel like I’m slowly but surely becoming more level headed, and I’m definitely less upset/angry on a daily basis. I wish everyone the best who still uses Twitter, but if you feel it’s impacting your life negatively, I suggest deleting it

I was just talking about how black and white people see situations, and more specifically characters, when they're really sort of grey situations (or people). It seems like people are either really for something, or really against something. People can do no wrong, or are the embodiment of evil. And it's just... so unnuanced. Like yes, sometimes things are that simple, but a lot of time it's not. People love seeing things as black or white, and I think it's really indicative of the culture our justice system has created. You're either guilty or innocent, and there's no in between or sympathy for your circumstances. Obviously, seeing fictional characters as either black and white isn't as much of a big deal, but that is what I was talking about before this because it's personally annoying to me, but I do think it's indicative of how we view situations, and just, like, the world. There always have to be a good guy and a bad guy, there always has to be a side to pick, when conflicts aren't always that simple in the real world. There isn't always a good guy or a bad guy, you know? I do think the system of Twitter also feeds into this stuff. Twitter loves it when you argue, when you have bad takes, because it benefits them financially. Which is honestly all the reason I need to never get twitter; I don't want to be on a platform designed to make me angry. But that's just a personal choice, and I do understand there's benefits to having Twitter as well.

internet friends is not a good thing if you don't already have a tangible support group/ safety net in real life. That discomfort should exist to keep you motivated to make real friends, online stuff is just a distraction. those people aren't gonna be able to help you with car trouble or give you a place to crash etc. having friends serves a tangible function beyond just emotional. it's community building, locally where it matters
