In this video, my German roommate and my American Aunt try to say words from a German Dictionary. It starts off pretty easy but then by the end, we have lost all hope! German is so hard!
Here is the video where my aunt and I checked out cologne and saw a castle plus way more:

Hi! My name is Lamblike and I lived in Germany for 2.5 years where I studied a masters program and took intensive German classes. I am on youtube to share my love of learning about other cultures: specifically, German culture. I plan to make many videos where I compare American and German culture, including some videos where I will practice German. Please subscribe, like the video, and follow along every week for a new video. :)
Check my new videos out because I moved back to Germany in October of 2020

"Ehre" and "Ähre" are very close together, that's a high level challenge. Don't learn from the dictionary. Learn from listening. You are confused by the letters, cause the letters have a different meaning for you. Children learn by listen and repeat - writing comes 3 years later. German pronounciation is very easy, cause it's very strict. There are almost no exceptions, the "ch" is sometimes spoken soft or hard, this you cannot know from reading. But there is not such a weird thing like pronouncing the I differently in Illinois or Idaho. Something like spelling-contest is completly unkown in germany, cause it's not very complicated. If you write from listening, there are errors like mixing b and p, or d and t. Nobody is ever mixing up vocals.

@holger_p

@@19Fenja89 Da hast Du recht, aber die Hälfte deiner Beispiele sind Eigennamen und Fremdwörter, und wir machen alle 50 Jahre eine Rechtschreibreform um so etwas anzupassen, wie jetzt bei Majonäse. Vor 100 Jahren hat man das h aus Thür und Thor entfernt. Dadurch bleibt die Sprache relativ dicht an der Phonetik.

Actually for 99% of the cases, you can know whether the ch is spoken hard (the throaty ch) or soft (the hissing ch) from the spelling (provided it is a German word and not a foreign word that follows foreign pronunciation rules): Generally, the ch is hard if it follows the sounds of a, o, u or au. It is soft after any other vowels or Diphtogues (e, i, ä, ö, ü, ei, eu, äu) If a word begins with a ch, it is the soft ch when it is followed by e or i (like in Chemie or China), otherwise it is usually pronunced as a k (like in Christ or Chor) If the ch is followed by s within the same syllable, it is always spoken like a k (or you could say the chs as a whole is spoken like an x, e.g. in Wachs)

@ThatSux
@ThatSux 4 года назад
@@patrickexiler9255 exakt. Sie reden sich raus mit, den Buchstaben gibt es ja garnicht. Letztendlich kennen sie aber den Laut den dieser Buchstabe macht & deswegen ist es absurd das manche Menschen es dann nicht aussprechen können bzw. Eher nicht aussprechen wollen.

Also, to make the ö and üyou just have to round your lips when saying another vowel. The ü is the eeeee sound in English but with rounded lips and the ö sound is the "e" in egg but with rounded lips. If you make a continuous vowel sound and then practice rounding and unrounding your lips you'll get it.

@Lamblike Interesting thing is, that your main problem is not really the Umlaute, but the vowels, especially the "a". You sometimes speak vowels, that should be spolken softly, quite harsh. Examples: Your "multiplizieren sounds more like moltiplizieren (with a short spoken o), mühsam (here you speak the second part like the same Sam, Marienkäfer you spak like Merienkefer. In unwahrscheinlich your wa is spoken really sharply). All in all you don't have a strong accent while reapeating words, it is just noticable.

Estonian words are interesting for a Finn because many words are like some synonyms which are rarely used. Edge of ice would be "jään reuna" but the Estonian word would be close to "jään ääri" where "ääri" is indeed a kind of border or edge but usually used in a figurative sense. "Öötöö" would be "yötyö" which is very close indeed :)

1:58: It is Abenteuer with three E. 2:47: Kuh is neither queue nor Küh nor coup. :-D English native speaker tend to make the ou sound rather than a straight u. 3:11: Hebebuhne. :-D Funnily, you make the u in Kuh to an ü and the ü in Bühne to an u. 5:55: Make it easy and say FCKW for chlorofluorocarbons. 7:18: Daniel does it wrong as well and says "Högst" instead of "Höchst". That is either dialect or laziness. In Baden-Württemberg it would be "Högschd".
