Two Critical Weeks for Fledgling House Sparrows

The two weeks after leaving the nest until they are left by the parents to look after themselves are a very important time for house sparrow fledglings as they have to learn some of the basic skills required to give than a chance of surviving to adulthood and to breed themselves next year.

Few weeks ago I rescued little baby girl sparrow and now she’s my best friend. She’s always around. She stays 10-12 hours outside playing with other birds. Sometimes she stops by to say hello. When gets dark outside, she’s back home to sleep on her favorite yucca plant 🌱 😉 No matter what I have to be back home before 8PM to let her in. She has turned my world upside down, but she’s worth it. She brings so much joy to my life 💕 Every second spend with her is priceless🐣🐥♥️

I am positive that everything the fledglings begin doing after leaving the nest is natural instinct. I volunteer at a rescue and we take in nestling sparrows along with other birds. They all display the same behaviours even though they have not been in contact with adult birds for most of their lives. I've always found it fascinating how they just know how to do these things instinctively.

My love for the house sparrows was realized one evening as the sun was setting, I heard a chirping just by the window. I saw one adult sparrow chirping at me,as I used to feed birds so I instinctively gave a little thing to eat. When I did,I found out there was one fledgling next to it. I thought to this day,it was late in the evening and the baby was hungry so mommy came and politely asked for help that day. The LORD GOD Almighty has letting me to some little encounters with some of these feathered friends,bringing joy into my heart.❤

@@MauriceBaker100 came across your video whilst researching where would a fledgling sparrow sleep for the night that cant fly high 😪 During this covid lockdown peering out into the garden noticed our colony of sparrows that I put hay out for as they are always curiously looking down into our tortoises run for somthing, I assumed its the hay! Yup it was, as they cleared it within a day after I layed some hay on to the floor of my dandelion lawn! I never weed the lawn so I have more dandelions than grass! Then this morning i noticed a fledgling that couldn't fly around like the others it spent all day in the garden amongst the over grown pot plants, it was coming out practicing to fly around but wasn't taking off with mum, it was still iseing its wings as arms to balance and climb up the pots, all day we watched it till dusk parents fed it all day tried to lure it up onto the fence or low roof but it just couldn't fly high still, I wanted to get him to give him shelter for the night, but googled and rspb says leave them and another site claims they spend 2 weeks on the ground, is this before flying! We hope he makes it through the night, as he was on the floor around all my messy pots, logs, bricks, and weeds, in long grass, I Haven't had time to mow and tidy my garden but the sparrows love it, Didn't know that sparrows eat dandelion leaf, Also the yellow dandelion flowers petals, I was so surprised, And they feed the dandelion petals to the fledgling! Where would he sleep and will its parents find him in the morning if he survive the night 😪

Fascinating work Maurice. The extended close-up look certainly allowed me to better appreciate the subtleties of the sparrows' markings, particularly the adult male's back, which has a much richer set of tones that one can notice "on the fly." All the detailed information on the breeding and rearing is greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your comments that are mush appreciated. I know that the town sparrow can sometimes look a bit drab and dishevelled but a male in the breeding season can be quite striking with its grey crown, bright chestnut head and brown back with its black markings.

Thank you so much. Your video helped me save a female fledgling who somehow collided with our patio door window. I managed to revive her and kept her warm for about 2 hours. Eventually she managed to hop around a little & suddenly she managed to chirp. At this I made sure she found a safe niche in the garden but kept a watchful eye. Sure enough she came hopping along the patio to be met by her mother who fed her. She then disappeared underneath large sage bush. I kept hoping she had found a refuge and was safe from the likes of magpies and a resident sparrowhawk, not to mention ground bound predators. I thought I saw her mother going into the bush yesterday and caught a glimpse of what I thought was the little one. That was confirmed today when I heard cheeping from the bush and mother arrived. Made my day as I am counting down to when she can fly.

I just found one fallen out of the nest of a very big tree. Fast learning curve for me as I could not leave it for a cat to kill. We now have it sorted. I put some pet mince food through the blender then into a small sauce bottle. And when she wants some she chirps and opens wide. She has a bad leg and needed lots of sleep. But I reason that without sustenance she would perish. She also likes egg yolk and oats. But they need to be soaked till the oats expand, maybe a little added water, and also blended a little. She is too small to to swallow anything over a couple of mm. I am so pleased we have the feeding thing sorted.

Anything else you've been able to feed it?? I've found 2 which refuse to leave the youngest so I've had to take them all inside to keep safe from my cat. I'm not sure what I can give for them to eat
@eunice8116
@eunice8116 4 года назад
@@Sisi-sx6ub if they were fledglings meaning with feathers, really you should have left them were you see them... The mother and father would have been back and forth caring for them, Did you no that fledgling sparrows can stay on the ground for up to two weeks ? Once they leave the nest they don't actually return again! The adult sparrows take care if them, In the evening the parents tuck them up in a safe place till the next morning, In branches were they stay camoflaged and quite, They take cover from cats in plant pots during the day till the parent sparrows return with food. Parent sparrows teach them surviving skills somthing we can never teach them, I know it's hard to see them and leave them, but it is infact best for the sparrow baby to have their parents full care, If the baby has fallen from a nest and are (featherless) "pink" then yes you can try putting them back in their nest, if the nest is to high, make a nest from a small container, attach it close to the nest area in a safe place and the parents will come feed the baby, If they don't, then perhaps it's time to step in to help, Maybe giving them to a bird sanctuary would be best for the baby! I hope the ones you found survived. 🤞 P.s it is difficult but when you see fledglings keep the cats in just for a few days maximum a week or so, Till the fledglings are full feathers and stronger... They will eventually fly off with their parents, That's the best help you could have given to those babies, was by keeping the cats in the house. 🙀 And keeping your sanity baby sparrows need feeding every hour all day, They need mealworms, insects dandelion leaves and seeds. Their parent provide we go insane looking for them 😂 Every hour.

I've raised and released so many Sparrows over the years. Always thrive on boiled long grained rice as food and when they're ready, they want other foods. They can be taught from pre-feathered age to poop on command (into a tissue) as the parent Sparrows use a set call to do the same. I usually use the phrase, "Do a poo", followed by praise when they do. One stopped and pooped on my arm whilst climbing around me when I told it, "I hope that you're not going to do a poo", which caused it to promptly stop and poop. It had taken 2 days to teach the bird to do that. They can be hard work to raise though and make for loud alarm clocks. Hard to believe that so much noise can come out of something so small at 6 AM every morning.

Sparrows! They are amazing little creaturres, but have big hearts, and it is save to say that they are smarter than human, which have brains twice of their body sizes, in some measure of how to manage their household affairs. For example, they do not mate until they build nest ( their houses), until they feel that they secure food for their chicks ( offspring) or in the Spring; in the Winter, they sleep in secured shelter in warehouses or they migrate to worm regions. They are my neighbors , they make their nests up under roof of my apartment , I don't charge them for rent payments for I love them.

Thank you Khalif for your comments, I agree with your comments about the intelligence of sparrows as i am sure that some of their actions are instinctive but there is so much that they have to learn if they are to survive to an adult stage. My colony of sparrows that live in the ivy on the back of the house are a constant companion when I am out in the garden and I would miss their constant chattering if they were not there.
@khalifmohamed2486

Maurice Baker , I greatly appreciate your positive reply. Indeed, how this tiny bird and orther animals behave ( act) for their survival and propagation reason is amazing. They are guided by inborn instinctive behavior, devine guidance. I was just trying to juxtapose the parental care and cooperation of these tiny bird couple whose total body wright equals few ounces with that of eight-hundred bounds of human or with that of eight-ton of elephant pair. One day I was watching a video where an elephan bull whose tusks may weigh thousand bounds hit very tiny calf with tusks to clear his way to mate the calf's nursing mom. And other bull caught another small calf lifted up and threw it mercilessly to few yards. A teenage human mom put her newborn baby in a plastic bag and threw it into dumpester, and another mom left her newborn baby at front door of a church. When I think of the instinctive behavior and activities of these birds , I say wow! They will never extinct. Human , from ancient Greek, philosophers and inventors, admired birds. I think, without them , human wouldn't be able to invent aircraft and aviaton system. Human observed how birds take off , fly, and glide up in the sky and invented airplanes. Human also observed how fish and whales sweam and invented ships and submarines. Even though physists and geologists said that dinosours were extinct because of huge astaroid of milions tons hit the eath. I think , they did not care of each other , they destroyed themselves , probably ate each other. Surely, the lasting existence of these tiny beautiful birds depends on how we, human, care and heed our /their environmental and ecological protection by reducing or eliminating land, air and water polution from poisonous , harmful , hazardous substences that threaten and endanger our/their health and existence. Recentlly, I have heard that the number of their main diets , insects, is declining because of human heedlessness of protecting our environment. I hope that these birds never be extinct. Thank you for ur video.

I live in the outskirts of Leeds and we have a thriving house sparrow population too - my bird feeder is swarmed by a big flock all year. I think it helps that there are good nesting sites nearby - this year I have seen three house sparrow nests around my house, one in a brick vent and two under roof tiles. This year one of the parents often came on to my window ledge with insects in her house before flying to the brick vent nest just below - very cute.

Check your birds bum regularly. One thing that I did not see stressed in the materials I read about looking after sparrows was to regularly check to make sure their bottoms are clean, my friends nestling sparrow had at some time in a few hours developed a hardened poop about its bottom that was blocking its toileting and caused a translucent swelling about its leg. It was cleaned something that was very stressful for the bird and it toileted and ate but we are still waiting to see if it survives.

Thanks for sharing this! I looked up "sparrows feeding fledglings" and found this video, after seeing a sparrow parent feeding a fledgling in our bay tree, from pieces from the suet ball feeder. It's so cute how they beat their wings to get the parent's attention. I can hear them cheeping in the bee ivy so we may have more than one nest. I try to drive away starlings without alarming other birds, because they can prey on eggs and drive smaller birds away, including sparrows

Thank you sir. I just found your site. I love birds so much. There are two juncos that showed up on my patio today. There was a loud chirping indicating babies being fed. I looked out and there was a house sparrow who had fledged. To my surprise a mommy and daddy junco were feeding and guarding this sparrow who was twice their size! I am so curious about this behavior!

The sparrows in my neighborhood like to perch in the bushes beside my building entrance, and they seem to always respond as people leave and enter the building. I would love to obtain long video footage of schools of them landing, hopping around while feeding then ascending.

a fledgling house sparrow left its nest early and landed on our balcony, it can't fly high enough to escape the balcony so it's living there now. we put out some water in a dish for it, in case it needs water, and the parents are coming to feed it and watch over it. He likes to sleep in the crook of our bar-b-que stand, which provides a few places to perch. it has a strap that hangs down that it used as a swing at one point. Once it is big enough I supposed it will fly away on its own.

It's fledgling season, and unfortunately i stumbled upon a pack of noisy myna birds attacking a little sparrow. They had all their feathers and longer tail feathers, and saved her from the birds. I stored her in my bag and released her in my yard where there are many sparrow. I hope I did the right thing.
