I play Indian classical violin and there's so much to learn about the instrument even though it is used in a very different way in our music. Kudos Olaf! Schöne Grüße aus München!

I’m pumped for that violin building video! - Today is my building day, about to finish the back arching, and hopefully hollow out the back and top.. I get a Friday off every second week and I dedicate it to the workshop, and to building my first violin-and hopefully many more to come! Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦

When you said you were sending a violin I thought it is the one on the way to me. LOL Alas, 6 months early. You are amazing, Master Olaf and I love watching you work. I have a nice viola which I give the "Olaf treatment" checking over all the details like the bridge, sound post, string spacing and soundness. I love it. But, I can't wait for YOUR violin to come, that I am SUPER excited for!!! You and Coralie and your whole team do such amazing work. So happy for you and your business. You deserve more praise than I can bestow in a few sentences. I will let you know when my violin arrives!

Now I know what my own luthier gets up to all day!! Whenever I come into his workshop/shop I can't get out of there for at least an hour. He says "I know you want this done, but how about looking at this and that and the other, as well? I have to remind him, that was all done last time, and all was fine!! Luthiers always get excited when they get a really top class instrument in, to work on.

Thank you Olaf. Lovely to see how your day goes & also the procedures you follow. Presently I'm trying to get a violin I'm making finished for next month & I'm running out of time. It's interesting with the different school methods of making & assembly. I'm following the method of fitting & finishing the purfling to the plates before gluing them to the ribs (on an inside mould). I have the ribs mostly finished on the mould, waiting for the linings to be formed & fitted (to the back first while on the mould etc). I've finished carving the inside of the back now & starting on the inside of the belly (both plates have finished outers & have the purfling in). I have made the scroll & peg box with the neck only cut out to the profile at this point. This is another violin I had started & life got busy (with repairs & set ups & life in general etc) & got put aside. Now I have a deadline to try to complete it for, but I doubt I'll have it completed in the white by that time. Still, I'll have something to show at the time as a birthday present. 😊

Another fascinating insight into your day, Olaf. I love how you love your job; passionate about it in fact. As living wood, the instruments will pick up on this too. How many people though, can say they are truly fulfilled every day, as you are? Just one query: I wonder about the many different substances your hands come into contact with? Are any potentially toxic or damaging to your skin? I note you never wear gloves.
@AskOlaftheViolinmaker
@AskOlaftheViolinmaker Год назад
Yes, Thanks for bringing that up... The polish I use is potentially slightly toxic... When I polish a lot of instruments at the same time I use gloves.

Aren't geared pegs all around superior to friction pegs?
@AskOlaftheViolinmaker
@AskOlaftheViolinmaker Год назад
Not really... It just depends on the player... A well fitting beautiful timber peg just feels nice in the hand and looks way better. Also a well fitting peg properly adjusted is actually very easy to use. Most people don't know how to fit pegs to work perfectly. I'm not against geared pegs though. It should be all about the players and their experience and passion
@rossthefiddler5890
@rossthefiddler5890 Год назад
Geared pegs can be helpful on a cello for someone with arthritis & weak muscles, but they aren't cheap though. I've used geared violin pegs on a violin I remade into a Hardanger styled fiddle on the sympathetic strings, but they can be slightly 'notchy' as they tune & probably more noticeable on those low tension strings.
@heathermcdougall8023
@heathermcdougall8023 Год назад
@@rossthefiddler5890 If you've got arthritis and weak muscles, you won't really be able to play a cello properly anyway, well depending on where it's located! Cello playing is way more physical and requires so much more force all round, than the violin. A good one-piece tailpiece will give the fine tuning needed without moving the pegs. A good cello should hold it's tune, really well, if kept in a steady temperature that's not too high.
@rossthefiddler5890
@rossthefiddler5890 Год назад
@@heathermcdougall8023 That's not one tells an elderly lady wanting to learn the cello for the fun of it though. It's all about enjoying having fun at 'having a go'. In an ideal world, fine adjusters work, but weather changes & bumps will often require adjusting the pegs. Geared pegs takes that pain & hassle out of it, so long as they have been fitted correctly in the first place. I have to bush & refit a set of Wittner pegs in a cello because the peg holes are larger than they should & the geared pegs have to be accurately aligned to function properly. I learnt violin but have been accused of playing the cello like a violinist. 😊

Good video and interesting set of activities. I wonder what your day would be like if you had shareholders? Would you have to expand into also selling band instruments?
@AskOlaftheViolinmaker
@AskOlaftheViolinmaker Год назад
Nooo... Haha sorry... I'm passionate about string instruments and having one on one connections with most of my clients. There's room for others 🙂 Unfortunately shareholders are often keen on profits... Big profits and tend to suck the love and passion out of most businesses... There are obviously some exceptions and I wish there were more...

@Louise-zs9rl
@Louise-zs9rl Год назад
Hi Olaf, will your new violin have a bright or a dark sound? Which is your sound preferance for your own violins ( bright or dark) and is it possible for a violin to sound niether bright or dark but half way between? All the best from a wet and windy England! 😁
@AskOlaftheViolinmaker

@heathermcdougall8023 Год назад
@@AskOlaftheViolinmaker That's a perfect combination. I play the violin quite well ( Played 1st violin in a few orchestras) though I am principally a cellist. It's the player that can turn a really good instrument into a "soloists" instrument.
@HellBlade-od2mf
@HellBlade-od2mf Год назад
Olaf I actlly have an interesting question. As a violinmaker would you know the most cost efficient way to maximize your sound? Like which would be better a violin with the best strings or a better violin with cheaper strings or a better bow etc
@heathermcdougall8023
@heathermcdougall8023 Год назад
I can answer that. First of all, get the "right" strings for your violin. Need more "depth of tone"? Go for Pirastro Olives or Obligato's. I've found "obligato's " suit most cheap "tinny" violins. They "calm it down". Need way more volume and "sound" generally, on a rather bad older violin? Evah Pirazzi strings will do it, but they are expensive. The next move is a better bow.Definitely look at good 2nd hand bows. Many good musicians trade in a bow, towards a really expensive one, so many luthiers have a lovely selection which are cheaper, and wonderful. These 2 moves will totally change your violin. However, you MUST get it set up in the first place so it's truly playable.
@HellBlade-od2mf
@HellBlade-od2mf Год назад
@@heathermcdougall8023 Wow! That is honestly a lot more than I expected because now I feel like getting a second hand bow
@HellBlade-od2mf
@HellBlade-od2mf Год назад
@@heathermcdougall8023 actually question that I didnt think off, would Pirastro Olives or Evah Pirazzi "Last Longer" than most strings?
@heathermcdougall8023
@heathermcdougall8023 Год назад
@@HellBlade-od2mf yeah they will . Olives will take a week to "stretch" to stay in tune. Evah Pirozzi's will just work straight away, with only minimal "adjustment" normally the adjusters not pegs, but that will depend n how much "leeway "you've got left in your adjusters.My Evah Pirazzi's have been on my fab' modern Italian (1947 name make) for 2 years. My spare nice German has had Olive strings on it, and it's justlovely. So yes, really good stings do last longer.
@HellBlade-od2mf
@HellBlade-od2mf Год назад
@@heathermcdougall8023 How much longer would Pirastro Evah or Olives last compared to something like Dominants or Visions. Because I'm considering getting Perpectual Cadenzas especially because of their projection and learn love their accent and seem like a good investment.
