Dear Sorin, I am watching you from Hungary so we are kind of neighbours, greetings from here. I just want to say thank you for your videos, what I watching a lot and these are awsome. I bought some stuff to repair myself, also built a power supply myself, now learning electronic from books and online. I just would like to share my first 2 succes. A laptop, no charging or turning on, succesfully diagnosed a faulty dc/dc step up converter, so it is fine now. Second one is a Gopro, water damage and no coming on, cleaning, isolating everithing with self made liquid rosin flux as you tought, I have found a short on battery board, which was succesfully found and treated. No it is turning on :) THANK YOU!!! And keep on!!

Yet video after video us geeks, nerds and enthusiests keep being amazed and educated while feeling comfortable and not left out of what is actually happening. When he takes a call or goes to find parts in the shop, i feel like im there and am perferctly fine with waiting. Any other channel i would have left. Hi, Sorin, Hero of the Universe! Central pin on Dell chargers carry a 1-wire signal that decodes to charger wattage, serial number, etc. Sadly it´s not just a "high signal" like Hp´s.
@spamletspamley672

Could that be why the machines won't start after being unused for a long time? ie The machine is too dead to read the ID of the charger? Lots of people on the Dell site could not start machines that had stood unused for a ear or so.

I would recommend the Hakko chisel tips (D-xx series) or the flat BC ones. The shape of the bend J-tips is sometimes nice, but it's tiny tip is very bad at bringing the heat to the board. The only way the J tips work for me is by using the thick curve on the back. There are also two J tips...a bit shorter and a longer one. The shorter one is a bit better than the longer, but they're both far away from the performance of the D or BC style tips.

This is absolutely the Dell thing ( not charging properly without the genuine charger). It's the way they "protect their produts". The funny part of everything is that they actually do have some 3rd party production called XRT. They are dell approved and these are the only ones (as far as I know) that are working the same way the originals one work. Thank you for the nice video Sorin

A tip to help with your soldier iron temp you have to have that blue plastic key thing in the front to change temp. I leave mine in all the time. Hakko does this so co workers won’t change temps on other persons station area. I went through the same problem as you until I found this tip out then my iron works great now. Better then my wellar. Hope you get this to help Sorin....thanks for the videos. P.S. I can tell with that tip your stuck on the factory settings. New station once you get the temps up and working right. Where I work I was assigned an M6700 for sofware development. I was able to disassemble it a couple of times since it's quite old and beaten up, and it's having few faults. But my impression was the same, such a cool and well made laptop. I went to Dell's website and they had like a "Workstation" category. I bet they were crazy expensive at that time.

The way that works . its call a ! wire circuit. That 3.3 volts goes from the mother board back threw the charger wire to the I.D chip in the charger if the connection to the part of the port is bad it can read on the motherboard side but not charger side. It could also be the super IO extender chip it used in dells.

Error mesg on screen after repair is actually a good thing as it means that the CPU and main board is at least trying to work and H/D, ram or something out of place is no good. Amazing when i saw that the layers might have been burnt and even Sorin might struggle with that one as would the manufacture on a multi layer board. Only worry i have with applying too much current is that the tracks and even layers might get burnt and 2-3 amps has to be enough to heat something up and feel it , i keep to around 2 amps unless i need add more. Parts get stressed over time so another cap might start to burn out even when you found shorted cap and then alter another cap and so on. Love this channel, best on the Interweb!!

Hello, Mr. Sorin. Dell laptops require a Dell adapter, otherwise it powers on but doesn't charge the battery. Theres a chip inside the dell ac adapters that comunicate with the motherboard using the center pin, telling the mobo that the adapter is authentic. If you enter the BIOS it must recognize the adapter by indicating its power (65W, 90W, 130W), etc. Maybe that's the problem. The charger you are using doesn't pass that information to the motherboard. You can google for more information.

Its a pity you didn't go further with the broken connector/Inspiron. I have the same model. One day just popped up can't detect the charger. Bought a new Dell 45watt charger like the original. Same error, can't detect the adapter type. Borrowed a Dell 65 watt charger and still the same error. Replaced the socket even though all continuity was fine. Battery will charge if I connect it to a bench psu. Everything else works just cannot detect the adapter type. Great channel by the way. Keep up the good work.

Hi. It's fascinating watching the way you figure things out and find ways to recover from what look like impossible disasters! I got a pleasant surprise when you picked up the Dell M6800, as I have the M4700, which looks the same but without the fingerprint sensor. I agree that these are proper laptops, and I love my own, so it was good to see you figure out how to get the back off. :) I bet somebody bent the case, when they couldn't work out that it slides off! I just watched another video where you say you try to read comments on the old videos, so I came back to ask if ou videoed the next day of finishing the repair? My problem is that something corrupted the startup of my Windows 7 device so it could not find the Windows start file, and I did not have time to find out how to fi it, so I left the machine unused for a couple of years. Then, when I had time to look at it again, it would not start. The fans come on, but then it turns off without going into the startup sequence. I thought the BIoS battery might be dead, so I tried to change it. Then I discovered just how 'Precision' they made these things! The fitted battery has welded on leads, and there is almost nowhere where a normal battery holder can be fitted! Even if you try to run a battery wire over the back of the cooling ducts, the back will not slide back on! I had no welder and could not solder to a battery case, so I ended up drilling through the side of the depression for the battery, so that I could run wires to a battery holder on the other side of the case. It was a tight fit getting the back on even then, and the case metal is surprisingly hard to ordinary drills! Very well made! Sadly, it still would not start after putting in the new battery, so I was pleased when I saw you working on the similar machine. You had to put it aside to finish later though, so I never saw how you managed to restart it. :/ Is there another video with the rest of the repair, or more on similar 'Precision' machines? I notice that on the Dell site, a lot of people had had the same problem of the machine refusing to start after being unused some time, and nobody had found a reliable way to fix it. Maybe I will get more ideas from your other ingenious repairs! Thank you for all the entertaining and educational lessons. They give me plenty of ideas. (y)

I understand a lot of things and also if you haven't noticed he has beginner lessons too where you learn the very basics. The things I find hard is like when I can measure a shut to ground, but I can't seem to locate the exact problem, and when I finally come with the amps I feel allot of components getting warm. Next just to try something I unsolder them to see if the shut to ground disappear. What I find out is, it is some voltage converter chip that splits 19v to 5v and 3.3v. And there is my dead end. Is the chip suppose to shut to ground when the power button isn't press or is it dead? Most of the laptops I have practiced on is build very differently than the ones in the videos. By the way I am starting to take lessons too. But Covid have delayed everything.

@@corel965 Thank you. I find areas on many laptops where I can measure ground on both sides on the capacitors. When investigating I often found out it is the same rail for either the CPU or GPU. So what I find difficult is whether I found a fault or it is suppose to be like that?

Pop? I love your job. But Pop do you accept advice? Because there's a technique that will make you fast how to disassemble a different model of any laptops just by watching here in RU-vid that really helps a lot. Just type in the brand & model of laptop then watch here in RU-vid on how the guys disassemble it and each group of screws attach it with adhesive tape designed to each platform cover of laptop so it will be to make life easier, so when you assemble it back together, you know those group sizes of screws belong to that location. If I'm late to mention it, good for you those techniques and you're still impressively fast to troubleshoots issues! But luv your job giving me also good ideas. Thnx for sharing your videos pop. 🙂

You could make your own solder Iron with toroidal transformer . Could be a video from home for this period of lockdown (Just an idea)

I've actually got to fix a shorted board by drilling it exactly on the shorted spot. I've posted the details on the Discord channel ;) Cheers!
