This is like therapy, watching you paint is the only thing I have mental capacity for right now. So happy for the music and no commentary as well, this is perfect and I hope I can find more like this. I needed this. Thank you. And your art is amazing.

@@JordanGrimmer Man, I had just found your videos when I wrote and since then I have watched almost all of them. Learning so much, in what I can already do, what I don't think I can do in my software and most importantly what I want to learn. I'm really happy to have found your art, and seriously I love the lengthy videos without commentary. You also chose such perfect music to go with your art process. What a pro, I'm definitely aspiring to find my own zen thanks to people like you. Have a brilliant day my friend!

A lot of artists do this. I do it as well. For an environmental artist, these geometric shapes/blocks of color might inform some structure, or inspire some ideas/concepts that get the creative juices flowing. One of the biggest blockers as an artist is the empty canvas paradox. When I work in pen and ink (or markers) on Bristol, that clean white sheet of paper is one of the most intimidating aspects of starting the work. When I work digitally, I throw in a textured background, some layers of gray set with low opacity and play around with adjustment layers until I have something that is interesting, rather than a blank canvas, even if the finished piece looks nothing like where I started.

@@LTRX_ Ha! Most of my stuff online is severely outdated. Unfortunately working commercially for a very long time means client work has left my personal projects out to dry. The last post I did on DA was probably from like... 2002? And my style has changed dramatically since then: www.deviantart.com/silverjerk/art/The-Wicked-One-Decieves-637996

Those are not random shapes they were deliberate attempt to lay lout the composition bc rendering things that only weakens the whole composition is a waste of time and most artists are paid for one project and not hourly rate so why bother. It’s working efficient man. Notice how he also toggled b/w color layer, it’s also laying out values cos values help direct focal point in a composition

Hi there, this work started with and continued as very stylish piece, cool use of perspective grid and geometrical selection, I like also that you work in tones and colors at the same time, building the depth of the illustration towards the foreground. Thanks a lot!

I wish I could understand some of the thought behind the processes you go through, Jordan. Lots of lasso/pen work, I guess to isolate shapes onto their own layer, but a lot of them seem so random and then you bring them into something more cohesive. I do this too, but just end up with random colour on the screen because I have no idea how to take these random shapes onto the next stage. Is it just a different way of looking at values? And I love the music, too. EDIT: For anyone who is interested this exact thing is explained very well by Jordan himself in this video... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-e8OPmP75HJU.html

Hey! It's all about taking it slow and not worrying too much about detail. As you said, there are random shapes in there and I try to refine them down as I go. The next step from there is just slowly trying to separate parts from one another. It doesn't matter how shit you think it looks, focus on creating a few shapes here and there and then add a slightly lighter value to them to start indicating form. Start small, small shapes, add small bits of form and go from there. Simplicity is the key!

@@JordanGrimmer Thanks Jordan. I've gone back to thumbnail sketching and remembering the rule of dark to light/near to far values, and atmospheric perspective. If I can make just a few sketches per day then my silhouettes will no doubt improve.

Question for you (and amazing video btw) : So you don't care at all about all these layers ? You create a new one when you want to add texture/shape, am I right ? How do you manage this ? This is not stressful ? :) (sorry for my bad english)
@JordanGrimmer
@JordanGrimmer 6 лет назад
Not usually no! I tend to only really start caring once my computer starts to slow down but if I'm doing client work I'll try and keep them much more organised than this. When I do sketches like this I tend to not really know where stuff is and just try to remember where I've placed certain things. Not the most streamlined workflow I know but being careful and organised tends to slow me down when I want to get an idea down as quickly as possible! (Your english is great btw!)

Watching videos like this makes me realize how little I know of the thought process that goes in the background when working on a piece like this. How to keep track of all those layers? I thought that it always starts with some sort of shape drawing and maaaybe a sketch here and there. But this was shape creation and moving it around a lot. Just watching this vid makes me feel dizzy xD Keep in mind that I am a complete noob and that I just started doing any form of drawing and "art", and this is some high-level shit right there. And it's really overwhelming for my puny little brain.

@JordanGrimmer
@JordanGrimmer 3 года назад
Haha, yes admittedly it is a bit tricky nearer the end, but in the beginning I try to keep as many important elements as I can on their own layer, like the foreground, midground, stuff like that. But then it just gets a bit crazy! It can take a little while to find something but it's not that big of a deal.
