I think most people agreed to remove the trees is because they hide the beauty of your home. I still feel like the one on the left if your facing your door could be trimmed a bit more. The area where the stairs is so you can see the stairs more. The stain looks fabulous. Let us know how it holds up.
I would suggest an Italian cypress, sky pencil holly or a lollypop topiary in a planter with seasonal plants. You'll have wonderful winter interest, and the vertical structure that won't be to invasive.
Sometimes it's that lone voice that speaks to us. Great idea to prune up the evergreens then decide to keep or remove them. You can always prune on them for the holidays, think of the beautiful bows you will have for decor projects.
I liked that you gave the trees a second chance, after all , they’ve been there for a while making their efforts to live and are healthy after all… in the years to come, if you feel you want to show your entry more, you can always trim a little more, make different shapes, even cut in the height, doing little by little it won’t harm the trees. I loved the stairs new color, it inspired me, I am thinking now to do the same in mine. Thank for the content and inspiration!
Hello Les, thank you so much. I definitely agree and I’m happy I tried pruning them. 👊🏾 I love how they look. You should definitely try staining yours. I love how the stain breathes new life into an older hardscape.
The area looks better but the scale of the trees is still too large for the area. The roots are still growing underground and they are so close to the foundation of your house. I know it’s not going to be easy to dig up but the bigger those roots grow, the more apt they will be to start cracking your walkway and steps and the harder it will be to take them out.
A row of boxwoods along the driveway would really define the path nicely. I’d consider moving the tree to the backyard. The scale cause a pinch point to the porch. Is it possible to pull back for a full view of the home?
Don’t kill a tree if you have another solution! Trimming the tree is a wonderful but you could shape it more. Have you heard about Niwaki the beautiful way Japanese trim their trees? That could lighten these trees and make them a beautiful ornament for your front yard. Plus the serenity that comes from this ancestral technique…is priceless!
Awesome! thank God you didn't remove the beautiful specimen!!!! Privacy is important! Good job pruning! Cheers and you have given me the idea to prune mine on the side of the house!
Loving the content. I would suggest a layer of compost worked into the top layer of the soil before putting the mulch down. Those trees are going to look so pretty at Christmas time. 💐🏵🌻🍅🫑🥒🍉🍋🍒 StL Zone 7b
Hola. The trees look great. I couldn't imagine completely ripping them out. Ur the best decision maker for ur home & u always do a great job. The part when u were removing the grass from the bricks was so satisfying to watch. Ur front yard area looks great. 🪴 TFS Have a great week.
Hi Daphne. I love the stain on the stairs. The house looks great. Trimming the trees really made a difference. The change helped draw the eye to the front door. I enjoy working in the yard and the house as well. I live in Nashville, zone 7b. Thanks for inspiring us with your videos.
Love, love, love how you pruned your trees. Now you are ready to pop some bright yellow mums, whether in the ground or in pots, in front of the trees for fall decorating.😂 Your stonework is looking gorgeous with the stain you’ve chosen. Everything is just beautiful! Yes, if I were your neighbor, I would be envious. Lol
Gardening is such great therapy. You did a great job ! The wonderful thing about gardening is that you can always change your mind….going back and removing a bit more and adding new additions !
I admit I wanted to remove the trees but you did a great job trimming them to really open up the space. I’m in zone 8a in NC and it has been so very hot this summer, so ready for fall! You’ve done some amazing things to your yard and your home this season! Very beautiful inside and out.
Hello there, thank you so much. I’m glad I tried cutting them back. I had no idea they would look so differently. I am ready for fall too. Have a blessed week ahead
Hello Daphne, Your two are beautiful in front, Your shaping looks good, I would keep them, also at Christmas time I would add lights to them and it would really look beautiful.🖤💯
I say either or regarding keeping the trees BUT I also feel like keeping them reminds me of Christmas trees and would so pretty decorated in December!!
Your home and front yard landscaping is beautiful. Get one of those light weight power wash wands to keep up with algea/moss build up to get in every crevice.
Hello Anilori, thank you so much. I actually have a pressure washing but when the project is smaller I don’t want to bring it out. 🤣😂 in my video that I will post today I’m using it. See you later! 👊🏾
I’m glad you choose to prune. Folks don’t realize how hard it is to move trees this big not to mention the roots that are in the ground. I live in Maryland and actually just came from cutting back my vegetation and when finished your video appeared on my feed. 😊 🌲
Hello Anne, thank you. It definitely wasn’t something that I wanted to tackle but if I could have found a spot I may have tried. lol! It’s like it was meant for you to watch it. 👊🏾 I hope you didn’t work too hard.
Your home is beautiful, love the stone, perfect trim and accent colors. Your variety of landscape textures and colors is very complementary to your home. Lovely job. 👍🌸💕💕
Not sure why this showed up in my feed but I'm glad it did. Love your video style, and the grounds and landscaping are lovely! I would suggest that some color underneath the juniper trees would brighten that part of the landscape considerably and add a bit more interest; either by planting into the ground, or a few pots of annuals. I must confess, I'm a little envious; I live in a condo and wish I had a yard!!
Hello Annette, I am so happy my video found you. 😊 it is nice to meet you. Thanks so much. Awesome suggestion, I plan on adding some color for Fall. 👍🏾 do you have house plants? I love ZZ plants. I will share my yard with me. 🙏🏾
@@daphnesoutdoorliving6146 - I actually do have a ZZ plant! It's the only plant that survived the move from NJ to IN. I need to have some work done and get the condo decorated before I bring in any more houseplants so I can bring them into a happy home. Had plants all over the place in NJ and I can't wait!!
Hello Annette, that is why I love zz plants so much. Take your time, I’m sure your place will be just how you like it soon. A move can be hard and takes some time to adjust. Have a blessed day
Hello Daphne! You did an awesome job with your trees in your front yard! They look very nice now that you’ve pruned them. I’m glad you are keeping them.💖 you have done such wonders in your front and backyard this year. Thank you so much for sharing. I love seeing your yard❤❤❤ and your Hardscape is impeccable!!!🥰 You have taught me so many new words this year when it comes to landscaping , thank you❤
Hey Daphne, Happy Monday! I'm glad you came up with a great solution and kept your trees. The way our home layout is, it's best for us to be able to see the complete span of our front yard. Our neighbours right across from us removed all her large pampas grass plants, because kids were always hiding in it doing foolishness. Lol. They were beautiful, but I think after so much scares they had enough. Wishing you a great week. Tfs ☺️🪴💐💐
Hi Daphne, looks fabulous, there’s so many types of juniper trees; many are used in yard landscaping. Like most trees they definitely need to be trimmed regularly… there is a love hate for them, for sure! Much love and support have a blessed rest of your week and weekend with your family! 🌲🌲🌲
Hello MaryAnn, thank you so much. I had a landscaper put them in when I really didn’t know too much about gardening so I can’t imagine they would have put something in that shouldn’t be by my home. I’m glad to read your comment. 🙏🏾
@@daphnesoutdoorliving6146 I am planning to make a potting bench area in my backyard to corral pots, bags of soil, mulch and some tools. We keep most of our yard equipment in the garage, but I need an outdoor spot to get messy when I plant containers next Spring. August in our is already starting to move into shorter days and Fall.
@@daphnesoutdoorliving6146 sorry, i wasn't clear. i meant cut half way down from the top. i'm sure nothing would hurt them. probably make them grow faster!
everything looks nice now. I think you will have to remove the trees though. You could move one forwards to the left side of the house (left when you are looking At the house), and the other to the place in the back that you mentioned. They are just going to get bigger, their roots will eventually impede on the sidewalk/steps. And constantly cutting them back like that is not healthy for the tree. Remove them in the spring, April.
Hello Veronica, thank you. I was thinking if I do have to move one it would be the one on the left and keep the one on the right but I like your suggestion. 🙏🏾
Hi Daphne, I randomly got ur video n watched because I found ur voice so soothing. I’m also from NY but living in TX now. I’ll b following ur channel now. Stay safe! Gr8 job girl. 🥰
Shape them top half small rownd and bottom half slightly bigger round. On both trees, bit like snowman shape but with a gap in the middle. Lydia Webb UK
Your voice is so calming . Ohhhh I love the big beautiful hosta's on the side of your house near the upper part of your garage. I'm new here ... hehehe I love it here already .
Beautiful yard, now my only comment is next year leave the natural needles that fell on the ground under the tree; as they will fertilize the tree by adding nutrients to the dirt useful to the tree. Of course, clean up but instead of removing the needles as you did this year just add your cedar mulch, and the dirt over time under the tree will be a great place to plant spring bulbs. Everything in your yard can be composted and turns into nutrient-dense dirt. We call this chop and drop and allow the natural vegetation to compost right where it falls under the plant that produces the leaves, sticks, needles bark adding nutrients and composting into fresh new dirt.
Hi Daphne, love your content. I'm in Brisbane Australia 🇦🇺 zone 10b tropical and long hot summers...currently winter here it's a rainy 18⁰c I think that's under 70⁰f 🌵
Hey Daphne! I glad you decided to trim them down first to see how they look. I think the area looks refreshing. You should add lights outside this year for Christmas. 🪴🪴 TFS
I’m new to your channel and I love the the tree hope you keep them there so he and the texture is nice I think yards need at least one evergreen in them good 🎄
Hello Darla, thank you so much for subscribing, it is nice to meet you. I hope I can keep them too. 👊🏾 I truly love how they turned out. Have a blessed weekend
I applaud the person who suggested pruning the two entry evergreens because I agree with everyone else who said they are too large for your front entrance. They do not frame the entry. They hide it, a no-no for curb appeal. Though there are exceptions, the top growth of a plant is generally as large as the root system. Therefore transplanting a tree that large might be more than one person can accomplish. You could not lift enough of the root ball for the transplant to survive. Professionals have the machinery for that work but with the cost involved, it may be best to have them plant a new tree elsewhere rather than transplant the existing. You had nothing to lose and everything to gain by pruning. There are some general rules about pruning. Don't take away more than a third of the foliage in any one season or you stress the plant and might kill it. Try to make all cuts at the fork of a branch to avoid a "fresh haircut" stubble look. Always taper the sides of the plant so that the base remains broader than the upper branches. This is to ensure the upper branches do not cast too much shade on lower branches which would weaken them over time. Even if you were wanting to maintain a hedge with vertical sides, cut a slight taper to those sides to maintain healthy foliage at the base of the plant. I expect you want your pair of evergreens to be cone-shaped. You did not cut away too much from the trees with this first pruning. Follow up next year by pruning to improve the shape of the trees. You can ask a friend to stand back from the tree to help you identify what needs to be trimmed to improve the shape. That way you won't be playing Donkey Kong climbing up and down a ladder. (Northwest Indiana Zone 6a)
If your evergreens respond well to the pruning by sprouting new growth, consider a more drastic measure. Cut away some of the lower branches at the level of the steps and expose more of the trunk. That could make your stairway feel less cramped for space. But give that careful thought because it is something you cannot undo. At worst, you could plant hosta or a ground cover in front of the exposed trunk and not allow the under planting to crowd your walkway.
Good morning! So you kept the trees I see lol. Not a fan of huge trees blocking a house and in my opinion your house would look so much more open with maybe a smaller different style tree BUT!! It’s your house and our opinions don’t really matter! I have low plants on each side of my porch but at Christmas I add many trees in pots to decorate but not overwhelming where you can’t see my door, garland and lights! You have to be happy with whatever it is you do and it’s just nice to see the time you take to care for your yard! 🤗
Happy 👏🏻 👏🏻 you took the ideas from your subscribers and you trimmed the branches of the trees and removed the other the frontyard views showed up the beauty of your home if you decides to place some brick stones around the two trees to keep the line free from weeds that's gonna be awesome just a suggestion that's awesome view of your home ❤❤❤👍🏻.
Hi Daphne, looks good! I can see them much better now, not the overall front lawn though; however, another suggestion would be to leave the one on the right as a stand alone specimen...and move the other one. That would really open it up and lead the guests to the entryway, then you could work on those two spaces in the future if you wanted to add some more plants. I have planted two crepe myrtles on the outside of my sidewalk...theyre standing alone, but eventually I will convert that area into an island bed. My hubby just doesnt know it yet 😂😂❤
I sarted posting online for anyone who wants my free overgrown tree, hedges, whatever. You dig it up (I watch they don't damage anything). It hurts too much to throw away living plants. There is always someone who will want it, you just have to be patient sometimes. Had so many "volunteer" pines that found a new home.
I don’t understand those who say to keep the trees for privacy because it’s important. Why would you need privacy at your front door? Privacy at a front door encourages break ins and at the very least - package and delivery theft. I would rather my front door be visible to my neighbours and save the privacy for where I hang out and relax which is the back yard. They do look better trimmed but I don’t see the point of them. They detract from the beauty of your home rather than add.
Hi Daphne. I just found your channel and I subscribed. You did a great job pruning the junipers. I wonder if you would consider removing the hostas (I think) from behind and under the trees. It might be just me, but the plants under the junipers distract me. i like a cleaner look. And I love your back staircase.
Hello Patricia, thank you for subscribing, it is nice to meet you. So funny because I could never get to them when the tree was so wide but I do plan on removing them. I’ve removed them in so many other areas too. The former owner had way too many hostas planted. 👊🏾
Hi Daphne, new viewer here and my comment is that these are the wrong trees for their location. Juniper can grow to 100 feet, so are not the neat look you may be going for. Perhaps 2 box trees might work better if you like that look. Much love from a fellow gardener ❤xxx
Hello there, thank you so much. I purchased from HomeGoods several years back but check my amazon storefront for similar options. Happy shopping.amzn.to/4636N0K
Hello Debbie, thank you, I plan on continuing to trim them up. Thanks for your feedback and I understand artificial turf isn’t for everyone but it’s the right choice for my landscape. Do you have any fall plans?
@@daphnesoutdoorliving6146 at the moment I'm in the middle of revamping my back porch and a pergola build in the back corner of my garden. Also planning to improve my small vegetable patch. I live on an island in the Mediterranean
I just came across your channel. Nice work. I never knew you could stain concrete like I saw you did on your steps. Am I correct? I am going to try it on a cement area in front of my garage door also on some of my blue stones. Please tell me if am correct. Thank you
Hello Bubbles, it is nice to meet you. Thank you. Yes you are correct. I have stained a lot of my hardscape this year and I love it. I hope you do too. 👊🏾
My mom has put it in our heads when she see homes like that with trees and bushes around the front door like I used to. That someone I can hide in those bushes as you pull up in your car or as you come out or in your house. You know when cops say there's no sign of forced entry they can ring your doorbell over and over and if you decide to open the door to see who playing with door bell they can Rush In from hiding behind the trees and bushes.just looking out and gve u something to think about.i love your steps and iam glad u plan on staining them, they would look nice with solar lights but I see the step have no sun on Them.if not every step well 1 at top and 1 bottom.gurl u hve to show off those steps. I love them. There not just your regular cement steps. ❤😊❤😊❤😊❤

@@daphnesoutdoorliving6146 - Yes, it will breakdown along with the mulch and add nutrients to the soil. You will notice over time that your bed's soil will become loamy as more and more mulch is added and it continues to decompose.
Hello Daphne, love your channel. I'm sure you gave the name but can you tell me the name of stain you use for the steps. I really love the color and would like to use. Thank you, Judith
Totally agree, Betty. Daphne - your walkway pavers are soooo nice but they will eventually get ruined with the roots of these two trees. Plus, it is not a smart idea to block your entryway where you cannot see or have a good sightline from a security perspective. Be it 4-legged or 2-legged creatures. :)
