So I'm scrolling my RU-vid feed, which is a mix of chess strategy, vintage video-games stuff and MMA talk, and this video popped into the middle of the feed, like a jump-scare. I actually went "Ahhh!" in the middle of my kitchen, like someone who who unsuspectingly opens one of those cans of generically labeled nuts that a coiled spring snake was hidden in. ha! So then I kinda screwed up my courage and girded my metaphorical loins (emotionally speaking) and decided to go ahead & watch & listen because the idea of hearing you sing a new song (well, new to me) again for the 1st time felt like something that'd be worth the bittersweet heartache of pondering all the ones I've missed and will miss afterwards. And oh, boy. Was it ever. Told you this before, but it bears repeating, if only this last time: with your voice, you give songs just what they ask of you, without a bit of the ornamentation or extra things you COULD do, but in adding would end up subtracting from the overall, what so many people end up doing - it's always so thoughtfully composed & truthfully delivered, to be *just* what the song needs to have it say what its saying. So, so good. At the end, where you let yourself fly a little, with your voice as instrument adding to the whole, and all of it, the strings & percussion and your flight on top of it is working in literal harmony to tell the feeling of the piece? it's the best kind of edited restraint; just exactly what the listener is surprised to find what is needed, once heard; not a whit less. It comes not so much as a surprise, but as a revelation. You tell the story of songs, in the best ways. I appreciate a good storyteller. This will sting for me afterwards, I'm sure, but that's ok. The sweet is worth the bitter. Price of admission, and all that. I'm glad I was ambushed by RU-vid here. It was good to see you smile and laugh. And the best kind of timeless-moment-standing-still slipping away to vanish to hear you sing again. It hurts my heart & makes it soar all at the same time. You making true things in the world? To paraphrase something my favorite living songwriter once wrote: "Just knowing that it's in the world is good enough for me." I'm only listening and watching just the once; it's about all I can handle. But it'll stay in my heart's memory for a long, long while. Good stuff, you. 💙
