@zeferrum Oh I should have posted about that earlier - so the owner accepted the quote and paid me for the parts. I'm going to tackle this in two stages 1. Buy the parts to repair the burnt out RAM VRM plus the vporised inductors and make sure I can get that running. 2. Then order the VRAM chips and replace them So there will definitely be a part 2
@@LearnElectronicsRepair After placing vram chips, you can try to read and verify flash memory in memory phase controller. You need to figure out SM_DIO (serial data line) i SM_CLK (serial clock line) signals from chip, solder 2 wires, use I2C programmer and software. YT channel "KrisFix-Germany" showed how to do this and why.
Excellent Richard! You are truly a skilled trouble shooting Tech and not “PCB board replacer” as so many are. Takes me back to the late 1970s where as an apprentice with the Telco I was ‘taught’ to keep replacing components on pay-phones until it commenced working! Over the years I taught myself to be a better trouble shooter and I continue to learn ‘low level’ repair. Your channel is THE best sir. Cheers - Darrell🇨🇦

I've just subscribed to your channel, and I'd like to thank you for your videos. Truthfully I think your channel is probably the best I've seen for teaching electronics. Explaining components schematics etc and more importantly your thought processes and how to diagnose circuits. I've learned so much from you in just a few videos. Keep them coming. I'll be watching all your videos. Once again thank you.
The short comes from top layer 12v fused to 2nd layer ground. You have to remove the top layer where it burned. Your short will be gone(unless something else is shorting out.
Great Video Richard! I really gotta say i didnt expect the short to be gone! I thought it would be the core or the controller, but now it actually looks fixable! And i can very well see that the other Problems with the bruning arent as bad as they first seem! The boards layout really played out in the favour of this card to live again! Really looking forward if you can fix this. Even if the owner doesnt want the card to be fixed you could maybe ssee if you could repair that one phase or get rid of the short and try to get the rest of the VRM to run just without the memory just to see if it would be possible to revive the card! best regards!
Yeah that would be my approach even if he does want it fixing. Initially he didn't expect this card to be repairable and said I could keep it as a donor - but he also has several more cards to repair apparently. I'll let you all know what the decision is, or hopefully he will post here and add to the comments.
I'm guessing the residue is silicone oil from the thermal pads, they do leak sometimes. More common on mining cards. Other option is vape or smoke residue.
JD I often see that silicone oil from thermal pads - but this stuff was much sticker and grimy. Also the silicone oil does not stop cards from POSTing, but once I removed the stuff on this one it started working. So I am still not sure what it was.
@@LearnElectronicsRepair probably then as others suggested residue from smoke or vaping. Also provides something sticky for dust and particles to stick to which could have caused the no post.
Hello, while running the risk of being redundant, I got 2 cards which I doubt will be able to bring back to live considering I don’t have a microscope or a decent hot air station. An HP 1080ti which gets to windows and goes blank fans to 100 as soon as drivers are loaded (this one I really hope can be fixed). And a 980ti which has bad crater bottom right corner of the card( front view), which I will happily just send out for parts or if fixable perhaps can be useful for you. Let me know if you would be willing to work on those and where to ship them if so. The 1080ti does seem to have at least one small cap missing from lane 5 or 6 of the pci e connector. In either case love watching your videos!
Really nice couple of repairs. I am guessing the sticky stuff is smoke from a chain smoker. find the same gunk in old ps3 and they smell terrible 😫 keep it up richard
Just came across your channel mate new sub here absolutely fantastic video and you should have a hell of a lot more subscribers than you have already. Keep up the great work
@Learner The Quick 861DW was set to 450C and 120 air flow The Kada 853B preheater does not have a temperature display - it was set to a bit more than half to preheat, then to about 80% when I started to use the hot air gun Please don't call me grandpa - I'm not actually a father as I had far better things to do with my life than raise children 😆
@@LearnElectronicsRepair Actually I was dealing with the same problem but the card was R9 280x and I heard that with 350 degree those ram chips would be loose but surprisingly that took about 430 degree(I do not own any pre-heater) to overcome that bad chips, thats why I have asked you as I am not a pro like you, by the way your eyebrows look like my beloved grandpa I hope I did not make you offended, keep up the great work.🤭
@@Maxximilian Hehe no I wasn't offended LOL - sometimes my eyebrows don't look like that when I go for a good grooming session at the barbers LOL The answer to your question really is to get a preheater - it does not have to be an expensive one. I like the Kada 853B for this sort of work and it makes all the difference, Jobs that were almost impossible become at least do-able if not easy www.aliexpress.com/item/33015926406.html €47 - and I am certain you will not regret the purchase
This is absolutely from a mining operation, notice that the dirt build-up is the same color and consistency. And heat failures like this is how people have literally burned down their houses. Very, very dangerous running a rack of cards at nearly 100% and then leaving them unattended. These kinds of setups should absolutely be regulated, just like doing any electrical modifications to your house requires permits and inspections. Makes me sick that these things are going on without any oversight whatsoever.
@Trouble Maker Well it didn't do it a lot of good to be honest 😉 Seven chips out of eight shorted. I was a more than a little surprised to see the GPU Mem Controller appears to have survived this incident. Of course there is no absolute certainty it did without repairing the other damage but it is looking quite likely.
Hi, im trying to repair a 1070 and after watching your video I noticed that the 2 and 3 pins of the PCI connector (from the back) are not connected to ground. Does that mean the GPU core is at fault or could it be something else?
@Tony Nameless Yeah as I thought, it is on the discord, it's this one 10182_ASUS_Strix_1070.rar Find it under GPU Schematics -> Nvidea Schematics -> GTX 1070 Schematics Learn Electronics Repair is now on Discord! Come and join the fun, it's free. discord.gg/vam6YC8vwU
Hi Richard, been watching a lot of your videos to try and fix my GPU. No luck yet why I was wondering if you accept mail-ins to your shop for a repair? Its a MSI GTX1060 and I will be sending it from Sweden. Appreciate it! Thanks
Man the 1070 looked like it had roaches living in it before it was shipped to you did it stink? I have a sign on my door that says if your device has roaches dont even come in.
