okay so this was their debut so the story at the beginning is the base for all of the exo concepts and it connects most to this new comeback although they utilize the powers selectively in other music videos too. Each symbol at the beginning represents one of the 12 original members and their powers that they debuted with which are depicted in the mv in the individual shots. If you remember when people were talking about SuperM powers, Baek and Kai kept their same powers from this debut.

You see in Baekhyun's teaser that there are lights (his power in EXO is light) and in Kai's teaser, you see that a car almost fell on Kai but he teleported (Kai's power in EXO is teleportation) And what I love about EXO, they are using their superpower concept in their concerts. Like EXO'rdium concert, It won Concert Of The Year because of the superpower concept.

So, this was EXO's debut song. They were initially divided in 2 different sub-groups, with 6 members each EXO-K : Suho Baekhyun D.O. Chanyeol Kai and Sehun EXO-M : Kris Luhan Tao Lay Chen and Xiumin EXO-K performed the songs in Korean and EXO-M did the same songs in Mandarin. That's why the Korean and Chinese versions have 6 members each. All 12 of them have powers, someone already wrote about that in another comment.

When you see the members all together in the "Mama" MV they are together because they are still on Planet EXO where they are still untied. But when you see them separated it is when they have all been sent to Earth. As part of their story, when they first arrived on Earth they each were dropped in different locations all over the world and what you see in the "Mama" MV is the members are searching for each other and they are using their powers to try and summon and find each other. They keep flashing back and forth between present moments and past moments. So how I interpret it is that at the end they aren't "back together" but that is a scene from when they were still on EXO Planet as they are preparing to be sent to Earth. The two worlds the narrator talks about in the introduction could possibly be different dimensions, so you often see parts of their story which could be interpreted as them being in different dimensions or time periods or different moments in history. So not only are the stories in each MV not in chronological order, but even the storyline within the story may be showing multiple time periods or dimensions that connect different parts of different MVs together, etc. To really begin to understand what is happening within the storyline in EXO's MVs you might want to look up some fan theory videos or websites. Its kind of a skill you have to develop to remember details and to understand how SM lays out clues and what they may be trying to explain by having the members do certain things or show them in specific situations, etc. EXO's story is just one giant mystery and its up to fans to try and figure it out. And now, with the creation of SuperM, it seams as if SM intends to expand that storyline to include its other groups. For example, I think WayV's recent MV for "Moon Walk" is somehow connected to SuperM's storyline, which means that it is also somehow connected to EXO's larger storyline. But what you should know is that its all just fan theories that the majority of fans agree makes the most sense with the information we have collected so far, but none of it has ever been confirmed by SM. We only hope that some day SM will come out with a movie or book or something that will explain things and let us know if what we thought was correct or not.

When you watch their other MVs like "kokobop" or even "miracles in December", you can see their powers sometimes. Also you can see their worlds coming together as, for example, the mirror was wiped and the members suddenly changed. They were in the same coin (or place) but were split on different sides until they came together via a supernatural event. That's kinda a nutshell version and I'm sure another exo-l can explain better. "Miracles in December" utilized Tao's ability, for example. Don't wanna say much more because Deacs totally needs to see if since winter is coming up fast. By the way, EXO has some of the BEST winter albums of any artist I've seen in my years as a kpop fan and I follow a ton of groups. Their vocals are perfect for that winter feeling.

Exo’s concept is so confusing that when I first learned about them I didn’t want to get into them because of it. There is so much lore and theories I have no idea what is going on with the whole ‘red force’ thing but I think most of their MV’s are connected with that somehow. And it seems like their new song will be too. As for the EXO-K vs EXO-M, I’m not super familiar but I believe they originally split them up so that one half could promote in Korea (K) and the other could promote in China (M) for the same songs. As members left though, they kinda had to reevaluate and basically get rid of the 2 groups. (because 3 of the Chinese members of exo-m left. They only have one Chinese member left (Lay💕) and he doesn’t even get to be part of exo songs anymore😭) I do remember reading a whole thing about how their comebacks were connected to real dates of solar/lunar eclipses too. It was wild.

So SM does this thing w/ their boy groups where they’ll make a really big group but break them into subunits. For SuperJunior & EXO they made one group to focus in Korea & do Korean music & one to focus on China promotions & sing in Mandarin. That’s also why they created WayV for NCT. The only group that they didn’t make big & break into sub units was SHINee. EXO, however, had 3 of their Chinese members leave (Luhan, Kris, & Tao) so they consolidated the group & will make Chinese versions of albums w/ all the members.

Did you know that in Korean MAMA is a term they use to address a leader or King or queen? Its a term of reverence and respect. It's similar to saying "Your majesty." If you watch very many historical Korean dramas you will hear the characters call the royal family and especially the head of the royal family or leader "Mama." So in this song they are speaking to the leader or deity who sent them to Earth, essentially asking, "Now that I'm here, Your Majesty what should I do? How do I fulfill what you have sent me to do? etc." EXO debuted in 2012 so "Mama" is indeed their debut song and MV and the whole point of the MV is to introduce the world to EXO and to help explain their concept and origin story. As you saw, from the very beginning EXO's concept is that they are aliens from planet EXO and they came to Earth with superpowers to protect the Tree of Life from the Red Forces. Each of the members has a superpower that is unique to them and almost every MV will have at least one if not all of them using their powers. Exo, as in exoskeleton, means "outer," so as a member of EXO they are outside the ordinary.The group's concept comes from the real term exoplanet, which is a term that is used for a planet that is outside our solar system, so their name was chosen to represent the fact that they are stars that are "out of this world" when it comes to their talents. EXO's concept is also connected to real life planetary and solar events so all of EXO's comebacks and new song releases for the main group of EXO are all connected to when eclipses and other planetary phenomenons take place. For example, when they had a comeback for their "War" album and "Power" album it coincided with when we had a solar eclipse, etc. SM Entertainment and its founder, Lee Soo-Man, has all their release dates and concepts planned out for years and it all has something to do with real celestial events that are predicted to take place. In order to really understand EXO, you also need to keep in mind that in the beginning there was 12 members and they were split up into 2 groups EXO-K and EXO-M. EXO-K sang and performed their songs in Korean and EXO-M sang and performed those same songs in Mandarin Chinese. EXO-K had 6 Korean members and EXO-M had 4 Chinese members and 2 Korean members. So to really understand their full origin story you have to watch both the K and the M version of "Mama,." As you have now seen, even though both the K and M version of "Mama" shows all 12 of the members, the K version focuses on the K members and their powers and the M version focuses on the M members and their powers. (Now that you know a little more about EXO's backstory you will probably start to understand more of why EXO does the things they do and what makes them so special.) However, since then, as you know, 3 of the 4 Chinese members have left the group (short answer to focus on their solo work back in China) but there is still one Chinese member left, Lay. (Any performances or MVs you watch that took place prior to May 2014 you will see all 12 of the members. Kris and Luhan left in 2014 and Tao left in 2015.) However, now, because they no longer have enough Chinese members they no longer do separate promotions where the group is split up, but they still produce all their MVs and main songs in both Korean and Mandarin they just now promote all as one big group EXO with 9 members. So not only does EXO have amazing MVs, but its always double because any time they have a Korean version they also will have a Mandarin version so it means they have to shoot two separate videos.Their fandom name is EXO-L because L falls right between K and M and it stands for Love. 😍 Get it? EXO-K, EXO-L, EXO-M (K-L-M in the alphabet) In the EXO-K version the members are using their powers to search for and meet up with the M members. That is why you see the K members traveling to find the M member. For example, you see Kai using his power of teleportation as he searches for the M members and you see Baekhyun use his power of light and Suho with his power of water, Chanyeol with the power of fire using his Phoenix wings, D.O. with the power of earth and strength and Sehun controlling the wind. Because Xiumin is one of the two Korean members of EXO-M, you see him appear in the mirror in the EXO-K version because the K members are searching for him and he is being summoned, etc. As the story goes, when EXO arrived on Earth they did not all arrive together. Their story starts out that they were dropped on Earth in different locations all over the world and they have to search for each other and meet up, kind of like in a quest, before they can begin to figure out how to accomplish the tasks they have been sent to Earth to do. In the EXO-M version of "Mama" you see the M members use their powers to signal the K members and travel to them, etc. Each of the members in EXO-K has a counterpart in EXO-M, so part of what you were seeing in this MV was them showing you which EXO-K member corresponded with which EXO-M member. For example, Suho (EXO-K) with the power of water corresponds with Xiumin (EXO-M) who has the power of frost/ice and Chanyeol (EXO-K) with the power of fire is Kris' (EXO-M) counterpart because he is the power of flight, and as you see in the EXO-M MV, Chanyeol has the power of the phoenix and Kris has the power of the dragon which both animal spirits have fire elements and flight so they connect; D.O. with the power of force and Chen with the power of thunder/lightning; and Sehun who has the power of wind is connected to Tao who controls time; Baekhyun with the power of light and Lay with the power of healing; and Kai with teleportation and Luhan with telekinesis; etc. That's how they maintain their bond even as members of separate groups. Also, each member in EXO-K has a counterpart in EXO-M that fills the same role in each group. For example, D.O. is the main vocalist in EXO-K and Chen is the main vocalist in EXO-M; Baekhyun is the second main vocalist in K and Luhan was the second main vocalist in M; Chanyeol is the main rapper in K and Kris was the main rapper in M; Sehun is the lead rapper in K and Xiumin is the lead rapper in M; Kai is the main dancer in K and Lay is the main dancer in M; and then its Suho is a lead vocalist in K and Tao was a rapper/vocalist in M (I'm not sure how these two really work together because Tao is more of a rapper and Suho is a vocalist, but because they are the last two they are put together.) The tattoos on Kai's face and body say EXO and also all of the EXO member's names, or at least the 6 EXO-K members names, as well as EXO's symbol and other hidden clues to EXO's origin story. (Everything EXO does is just one hidden message after another.) Now that you have seen "Mama" and are starting to understand EXO's backstory, if you watch any of their other MVs, such as their "Power" MV, it should make more sense to you. if you keep in mind all the details about them being aliens with super powers and how they are on a mission, etc. For example, the "Power" MV is all about how the Red Forces stole EXO's powers and they had to fight the robot, which was under the Red Forces control, to get their powers back. And once they got their powers back they were then sent to Earth. The one thing you have to keep in mind with all of EXO's MVs, and I really mean all of them -- including their sub-unit and solo projects, and now even SuperM content -- is that they are all connected and they all tell a little more of EXO's story and why they are on Earth, etc. Understanding "Mama' should help you understand their "Ko Ko Bop" MV better as well. ("Ko Ko Bop" is supposed to be about them just arriving on Earth and learning to master their powers.) Some theories connect the story in their "Lucky One" MV to the story in "Ko Ko Bop." In "Lucky One" EXO has been captured by the the Red Forces or some authority and they are doing experiments on EXO to try and figure out what makes them special. In "Lucky One" the EXO members use their powers to escape the facility. So some theories say that the story in "Ko Ko Bop" is EXO trying to detox from the drugs they were given in the government facility and the blue Ko Ko Bop drink Shuo mixes and the members drink is to counteract the effects of the drugs in their system. That is why the members act so out of it and in a drugged state in "Ko Ko Bop." Unfortunately each part of the story is not in chronological order, so we as EXO-L have to become detectives and analyze every aspect of all of their teasers, MVs, songs lyrics, albums, choreography and even live performances and piece it all together to understand the story behind it all. To help you pinpoint the powers being used in their MVs and live performances here is a list of the members and what their special power is. The members powers are: EXO-K Suho (Kim Jun Myeo): water (Fun fact: Suho in Korean means guardian, as in the guardian of EXO. That's why as the leader of EXO, his stage name is Suho.) Baekhyun: Light Chanyeo : fire D.O (Do KyungSoo): earth (dirt) which gives him strength/force Kai (Kim JongIn): teleportation (Kai means door or gateway in Korean so his stage name symbolizes his role within EXO's storyline.) In the song the members, being aliens from another planet, are struggling to understand how we as humans could allow all this evil and bad things to happen all around us, such as War, etc. and they are daunted by the fact that they are now tasked with figuring out how to fix it all and prevent more evil from taking place. That's why they need to find the two halves of the Tree of Life and reunite them to restore peace. EXO's story is part supernatural and Sci-Fi and part based on reality which touches on real life events and things that are really happening in the world. And from the very beginning, even during pre-debut days -- and everything since then, and everything yet to come -- is connected to that storyline. Everything EXO does and everything you see from them, including Baekhyun and Kai's parts in SuperM all has something to do with the concept and story that began with "Mama," and each new installment of something from the members expands a little further on EXO's story. This song is their debute. And yes, this mv tell about how EXO created and the beginning story when they come down to the earth bc they're introduced as aliens (with superpowers). From this mv till the last one, they're keep learning about how earth works and experiences so many things. This mv told you that there're 2 worlds, same but different. And that worlds occupied by EXO-K and EXO-M. We're fans are in the middle of them which named EXO-L. They're in the different world but still connected. The conflict of the whole story is, EXO being tested by "red forces" which explained in the Lucky One MV after they're caught in the Monster (and maybe in Lotto MV). And the trailer video of the upcoming comeback, they have a concept that EXO has been cloned. That's why there're 2 new accounts of Twitter and Insta that show 2 kinds of EXO members. The original and the clone one. It means the story still continues.

Maybe there is already explained but here we go: The Powers of EXO-M and EXO-K are mirrored but they aren't the same. So the other half of Kai's Teleportation (space manipulation) would be Tao's Time Control and so on (if you look the wheel of powers at the beginning you will see it -each power has his brother on the other side of the wheel-). They were born simultaneously but of a different side of the tree and the legend says they can not exist at the same time in the same space except when there's an eclipse. You can see the eclipse on the teasers pre-debut (that is what awakes the dormant powers once on earth). Also a lot of music releases happened on eclipses (I remember being at Korea one year and realize one was about to happen and think "Ok, today we will have some EXO stuff" And Yep, they uploaded a teaser XD) The theory I have is that then the story was made thinking on the 2 groups M and K but now that we have 6 active members we will see the counterpart on the X-EXO members that were created by the Red Force (the one who destroyed the tree of live). EXO are meant to be 'aliens' from the EXOPlanet. They are the guardians of the Tree of Life and protect it from The Red force. The tree was split in two parts which is why there is EXO-K and EXO-M to protect both parts. As for the storyline, you were mostly right! Basically in the lore, the exo members are aliens with superpowers from "exo planet". Together, the 12 of them make up the "Tree of Life". However, they are pursued by an evil force called the "Red Force". Threatened, they were forced to break the tree apart by separating. 6 of the members went to one side (exo-k) and 6 of the members went to the other side (exo-m). This is represented through the MVs, as you had guessed! The exo-k mvs are all sung by the exo-k members (Suho, Chanyeol, Baekhyun, Kyungsoo (D.O.), Sehun, and Kai). The exo-m mvs are all sung by the exo-m members (Chen, Xiumin, Tao, Kris, Luhan and Lay). The songs and choreo are exactly the same, but it's just sang by different people in a different language, just as with Regular by NCT. Both mvs feature snippets with all 12 members, or part that remain the same between both mvs, but there are also scenes that are unique to THAT version only, which is why we wanted you to watch both versions. The exo-m version highlights the 6 exo-m member powers and, of course, is sang by members you don't get to hear in the exo-k one only. Another thing you were right on: the scenes that are horizontally mirrored do represent the two different members on their opposite universes! For example, the one with the big fiery explosions? Yessss. This is EXO’s debut song, but they have 2 pre-debut song (what is love and history) So, EXO-K singing in Korean and EXO-M singing in Mandarin. EXO originally divided into these 2 subunits and to promote at the same time in Korea and China with same song. EXO’s concept was revealed here. Them having powers from EXO planet. Each of them has their own power. EXO has the best concept ever and the good thing here is since debut upto now they’re still incorporating their power concept on their music videos which is so cool and awesome.
