work harder at the source...drop a room mic 6ft in front of the kit and listen to your playing on the mic... if you don't hear the balance between the drums and cymbals the way you need it.. change your playing dynamics. Once that sounds good, use all your mics and play that same way... that alone is better than plugins for most things.

@@KohleAudioKult In my case, it actually was! DeBleeder is available up until the end of OS/X 10.x for Mac. Right around the time Big Sur (11.x) came out, Wilkinson Audio made a decision not to continue the Mac version of DeBleeder because Apple changed the way some of the security policies in the OS worked and it made their existing implementation incompatible so they decided not to do a re-write. Unfortunately, Big Sur is what's on my Mac. As a software engineer myself, I totally get the frustration of dealing with Apple or their APIs. Thank you kindly, buddy! Great channel, thx for sharing that stuff!! Here's just one more idea: Duplicate the raw original snare track and send both - original and duplicate - into a new snare bus. Then flip the phase on the duplicated track and add a compressor to it. Set the Attack and Release times to your taste and get a snare without bleed. Do then all your processing on the new snare bus. If you have the channels and mics, I recommend using two mics at different sides of the snare drum. The other cancels hihat bleed and the other crash and ride bleed. (point the butts of the mics toward them) Then automate mutes accordingly. This way these tools have to do less work, and that's always better.
@md4man
@md4man 11 месяцев назад
I saw one other person mention that Sonnox Oxford Drum Gate combines debleeding & leveling. That is true & Oxford Drum Gate is part of my processing chain. It cleans the close mic tracks up a lot but to finish off, I use Boz Digital Labs' Transgressor 2. The genius of that plugin is that it lets you EQ the transient & sustain portions separately. So, you can (for example) boost the crack of the transient while low passing the sustain, thus EQing out the remaining cymbal bleed from the drum's sustain. And you can do that while boosting the drum's fundamental tone in the sustain. It's an incredible tool. By the way, someone will probably mention that Eventide Split EQ allows you to EQ the attack & sustain separately too. That is true, but Transgressor does it a better way. With Split EQ, you can only EQ the 2 parts at the same frequency points. The attack & sustain EQs in Transgressor are completely independent of each other. Split EQs implementation is just a weird way to go about things to me.

*Hi Kohle, a related question on snare tracks:* I have used your slip editing method to quantize the track. Now I wanted to spice it up by layering my recorded snare with a MIDI sample. I know that I can convert audio hitpoints to MIDI, but only for a single event. There are hundreds of snare hit events after quantizing. Is there a way for me to convert the whole snare track to MIDI hits in Cubase?

@smeemusic
@smeemusic 11 месяцев назад
@@KohleAudioKult I'm going to be perfectly honest with ya. I do not know how to use an expander so I've never even tried to use one. I understand its similar to a compressor but I don't actually know what's going on at all. If this technique is like an expander, I would have never guessed. I actually discovered this messing with a live vocal track that had some drum bleed on it. I was mostly just clicking around trying to figure out how to tame back the drums without using a gate. The way I understand that knob is that it takes content out of the signal when I turn it down and it adds content when I turn it up. Due to the nature of the plugin I assume its all harmonics or saturation its changing. It doesn't seem to be doing the whole transient designer thing. Its not making the rest of the signal more punchy but it is basically only leaving the transient behind and usually reduced. So to get the highs out without damaging the body of the vocals I added a crossover frequency. I ended up not liking the way it worked out. I mean it was usable but I took a different approach. But I did end up trying this on the snare of the same project and it worked REALLY well for me. Hey if you have time to fit it into your schedule. Id love to see a video from you on the topic of expanders. Thanks for what you do here!!!

Addictive trigger. Don't make your life more difficult. Your OHs will fill in a lot of the room/natural sound anyway. Samples will deliver the punch. Think about your drums in the wider context. none of that seems likely. at least from a mix perspective. Just lower all the gains and turn up you speakers... then you won't peg your tracks faders. If your snare sounds "just like these" then you are likely hitting okay and apparently not clipping your interface. So, most of that still comes down to getting better mixing skills starting at lowering all your faders and dropping a trim on some tracks perhaps.
