The song Eruption is an intro piece that is only about 2 minutes. So this whole solo you saw here was mostly improvised during that live show. As I said in my comment below, you don't see "guitar solos" in live shows much anymore.

'Shredding' and 'Tapping' became such a signature of metal over the coming decades, that it's easy to forget they didn't really exist in rock music before Eddie arrived. In his own way, he revolutionized the sound.
@aleclewis9123
@aleclewis9123 Месяц назад
Actually, the tapping technique 'did' exist before Eddie revolutionised it and called it by that name. Steve Hackett used it in Genesis from 1971 onwards, see songs The Musical Box, Dancing With The Moonlit Knight, Supper's Ready and The Return Of The Giant Hogweed, where he harmonised the tapping together with Tony's Höhner Electric Piano that was sent through a fuzzbox.

Hey girls, This is actually a big medley off his guitar solos, there are parts from Eruption, Spanish Fly, Mean Streets, 316 (which is a kind of lullaby he wrote for his son when he was born) and other songs (I'm not totally familiar with VH discography), there also might be a few improvised parts. The story of Eruption is that he was early in the studio when they were recording their debut album and he improvised that as a warm up, the sound enginneer hear it and was like "hey let's put this on the album !!!" \m/ Also, you probably heard "Jump" as well (at least the intro), it's one of these songs everyone heard but noone knows who it's from :) Otherwise, I highly suggest "Hot For Teacher" which has the sickest intro ever, or Mean Streets which is groovy af. And Eddy was the biggest guitar influence of Dimebag from Pantera \m/ Rip Eddie

"How many hands does he have?".......that's hysterical. I have seen hundreds of reactors doing this clip and have NEVER heard somebody put it that way. Faking an ear-gasm is unneeded when it comes to EVH. This "solo" is basically comprised of most of his iconic solos or intros from his entire catalog. The ACTUAL "Eruption" is cut #2 on Van Halen's first album and is attached to the cover of The Kinks' "You Really Got Me" (worth a reaction vid, for sure!). Great vid, you guys!

Part of Eddie’s mastery of the guitar was his capturing of harmonics. He didn’t invent it but he mastered it. You can hear the use of harmonics in the Don Felder solo on the Eagles Hotel California which came out about 3 years before Van Halen’s first album. But what Eddie did was capture them into actual notes, not just accents on a note. Harmonics are the natural vibration guitar strings always have even just sitting on the table doing nothing. The air makes them vibrate at a very small, delicate frequency. You can’t hear them unless you turn an amplifier up LOUD!!!! And that’s what Eddie did - he was the first to turn an amp up louder than it could go from the factory by using an external power supply to boost the power going into it from the wall. The volume knob goes up to 10, but He once said “when Spinal Tap was going up to 11 I was already going up to 15”. He boosted that power so all those tiny harmonics came through then played with them. It was revolutionary what he did.
@garretisla5282
@garretisla5282 3 года назад
The part when the lights go blue behind him is one of the greatest things you will ever witness. He plays the guitar with the volume knob, not the strings. It is manual tremolo, and is one of the hardest things to do well on a guitar.

Whether you like their songs or not, you can't deny the talent and virtuosity that Eddie brought to the table. The man is a legend and in my opinion, is on the Mount Rushmore of greatest guitarists of ALL TIME! It's hard to say this person or that person is the greatest because musical styles and eras of music when one person might be the dominant player can be so different but Eddie deserves to be up there in the same tier as Hendrix, Clapton and Stevie Ray Vaughn (a few others probably as well). Eddie didn't invent the techniques used in his playing but he damn sure improved and expanded on them and took them to another level. I think that's what separates the great guitar players from the legendary ones; the ability to push the boundaries of the era forward to create a style or sound or technique that no one has heard and/or seen before. Van Halen isn't my favorite band but I did listen to them a lot during my childhood and into my teen years and Eddie always had my attention when I would hear them on the radio or see them on MTV. As sad as his passing is, I'm so glad that it's bringing to light his talent to people who otherwise would have never known just how good this man was. Loved watching your reactions to this!

It is mostly composed. Listen to the studio tracks for "Eruption", "Spanish Fly", "Cathedral"' and the intro to "Mean Street" and you will hear all of the major parts of this solo. The stuff he does between these sections are probably improvised. You will also hear deviations from the studio versions of these solos in his live performances. I grew up with Eddie - I started playing guitar the year Van Halen I came out. Watching you see this for the first time brings me right back to my early teens when I couldn't believe what I was hearing and had no idea how he was playing this stuff. The beginning of the solo was a bit he created on acoustic guitar. This was filmed in '86. 5 years later in 1991 Eddie's son, Wolfgang, would be born and Eddie would play this for him at bedtime every night. He would title it "316" for his son's birthday and would record it for inclusion on the For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge album later that same year. Right after the opening he goes into his signature guitar solo and the most famous guitar solo in the history of hard rock, Eruption. It was recorded for their '78 debut album and radio stations played it as a lead-in to "You Really Got Me", as it was on the album. The first half of it he plays while still up on the riser; the other half he plays down on the main stage.
@yesthisisvic
@yesthisisvic 2 года назад
Eddie's concert solo is a compillation of various solos he's recorded over the years. Some of the individual solos were recorded for inclusion on albums while others were intros to songs not on that evening's setlist. For example, the opening of this solo didn't have an official name at the time of this recording in 1986. 5 years later Eddie would name it "316" for his son's birthday who was born that year and would also include it on the CD they released later that year. The slap technique you saw was the intro for the song "Mean Street" from the 1981 Fair Warning album. Mean Street is the first track on that CD, so the first thing you hear when you hit "play" is that solo and then the song. The part he played right after this was a freestyle bit that he took from his "tabletop" solo from the previous tour in 1984. Interestingly, he would revisit this solo bit again and modify it to be used for the solo in a song called "Judgement Day" on the '91 For Unlawful Carnal Knowlwdge album. A final example is the solo he played with the volume knob. That's a standalone solo called "Cathedral" from the '82 Diver Down album. There are also other little bits and pieces in this solo, like the few bars he plays of Cream's "I'm So Glad." As for real freestyling, Eddie stopped doing much of that as the years went by, opting instead to just do an extended solo. In the old days, once or twice a show, Eddie and his brother, (drummer) Alex Van Halen, would just stretch out and start wailing for 7-8 minutes during the solo part in the song. They stopped doing that after a while because no one would know when they were ready to get back to finishing playing the song.

The beginning slow part when he was sitting is called 316. He wrote this at 3:16 AM and played it to get his baby son, Wolfgang, to go to sleep. Although this is his most famous solo on video, I’ve seen Van Halen live many times and he’s had even better solos. Eddie has said he was so drunk during this solo he doesn’t remember playing it.

Eddie did the guitar solo in Michael Jackson's "Beat It". There's a video of a live performance of the song and when Eddie starts playing, MJ starts fanboying, chanting "Eddie! Eddie! Eddie!"

This performance is loosely based on a song called Eruption from the 1978 album "Van Halen" and some other Van Halen songs too. (I was 10 years old) Eruption was one of the songs that people back in the day freaked out about because no one had ever heard anything like it. This solo and his playing on other tunes turned Eddie Van Halen into an international superstar and I'm sure you can hear/see why.

Fun fact: Eddie came up with the name for the "tapping" technique, but he wasn't the first to introduce it to the rock scene. 🙂 Steve Hackett brought it in with Genesis in 1971. Then there's of course Ritchie Blackmore with Deep Purple as well as Brian May with Queen. 🙂 When Eddie saw Steve perform at one of his solo shows, he was immediately inspired to develop this technique even further. 😊

Seeing him live is even better. Much of the music you heard was derived from his creation of "Eruption". He has used that as a base for much of this and it is improvised from that. A true genius feels it from the heart and given the tools, they will create on the fly. Glad to have a signed guitar and a few picks from some early concerts. He created so much for all of us to share. RIP EVH.

Eddie was a creative genius. Like Issac Newton if he was a musician instead of a mathematician and scientist. Crazy solo aside he built his guitar from parts of other guitars then tweaked them so they'd work together (different guitars have different sized parts) and built his own amps with voltage control knobs he built into them to control the exact amount of electricity to his guitar just to get his guitar to sound like that in the first place. THEN he came up with these insane solos. The really funny part about his style is Eddie couldn't read music, he learned entirely by ear, and they had to invent a whole new method to write what he was doing (tablature they call it) and Eddie couldn't read it to tell them if it was accurate or not! A true original in every sense of the word.

Eddie used to do sometimes hundreds of recordings in the studio then he would go back and listen to them, string togethe teh best parts, then learn how to play those parts in one recording. What made this so difficult is sometimes how the parts were strung togehter it required him to be all over the fret board. It's fun to see young people enjoying how talented he was. I feel like he was the guitar God of my generation. There doesn't seem to be one in this generation.

This solo is a combination of a handful of recorded works with improvisations throughout. 316, cathedral, and eruption are all a part of this. I think I even heard some mean street in there as well (and a few others). The parts where he picks very fast sound very much like classical music as Eddie was first taught classical piano (though he never learned how to actually read music).

I’m still saddened by King Edward’s death - but I’m pleased that so many people are awakening to his genius. Not only was he a brilliant musician - Eddie designed and built his guitars to suit the vision he had for what he wanted to play. There are so many talent guitarists around - but Eddie really took a mix of different equipment and blended it all together to give him the tools he needed to play in an entirely new way. Since 1982 I was able to see Eddie at about 50 performances. My last show was his second to final performance at the Hollywood Bowl. All his shows were fantastic and never lacked the excitement of watching him the first time. RIP EVH

Of course I know this version of Eruption of one of the greatest guitar players of all time in this whole universe, Eddie van Halen (RIP man! Show áll of them in heaven how to play guitar and how to enjoy it to the max!), but I wasn't aware of this kind of reactions for example as shown in this video from Two Sisters React. It will, no, it must remain such a shame that this 'guitar-god' passed away so early😥 Man, I still miss him on stage, his very virtuous guitar playing, his incredible and typical smile, his very positive attitude and vibe, his whole performance! I'm still crying at this moment for this incredible great loss and I'm afraid that this will remain forever😢 Again RIP Eddie.

honey,it actually depends on the guitarist performing. Eddie had a mastery over the fretboard, but he was schooled in Music theory as a kid. When it comes to solos for either a solo showcase in a concert or within a song the solo's end up a loose composition for the beginning and the end especially for live performances because usually at the end of the solo for whoever is doing the solo the rest of the band has to come back into commonality either leading into a jam or going to a song from the solo. Sometimes like in my case while I may compose a solo for a song it still comes to winging a solo at first to see if that solo will fit with the vibe and timing of the tune. So when it comes to writing songs solos are initially done on the fly and then rehearsed so they just become part of the song, other guitarists though can pull off solos that are different every time staying with the same key signatures and timings of the song. Plus Eddie was a master of certain technics like the first one of fretting up the neck and sliding the palm of his hand up the neck for that first climb you wondered how he was doing that which is either done with the palm of the hand or the guitar pick up the strings, the eargasm part is called a hammer on pull off which you have to have strong fingers to do as well as a working knowledge of scales and timing. Even at Fifty and playing guitar for thirty years I can't do hammer-on pull-offs as smoothly as Eddie because it requires the right amount of rebound of your fingertips hammering the string, without ringing or feedback from the guitar when you do it. He also makes use of great vibrato on his neck to accent notes and of coarse little tricks such as using his tremolo on his guitar with is a tool to bend the body from the neck to gain a different pitch. Also called a whammy bar.

Neat fact about that guitar. Eddie built it up from parts of various other guitars which is why it is called the "Frankenstrat". He also came up with the graphic design and painted it himself. When he was starting out he was very poor and couldn't buy the guitar he wanted so he scraped together parts that he liked and put them together into one of the most iconic guitars that ever was.

Eddie was definitely one of the best guitarists on the planet and this video is quite a display of his technical skills. Regarding this solo, Eddie played the Eruption solo a little different every night and this is way longer than the recorded version. This makes me sad for his loss, but seeing him incessantly smoking throughout the performance kinda ticks me off in a way because his death was ultimately a result of treatment for recurrent bouts of cancer...directly related to his chronic smoking, which he started when he was 12 y/o (his official death was listed as secondary to a stroke, aka CVA, along with pneumonia and a blood disorder, but the conditions can be traced directly back to his cancer and cancer treatments). He was initially treated for tongue cancer in 2000 (including surgical excision of about 1/3 of his tongue) and he was declared cancer free in 2002, but he continued to smoke and ultimately developed throat and lung cancer which ultimately lead to his untimely death at 65 y/o.

The guitar solo is usually based on the music of the rest of the song. For a pure solo like this song, a general riff is played repetitively while each round may be played a little differently. If you check out the first release of this song, side A, second song, of their first album, you'll recognize some of those general riffs in this performance.
