Two Tips to Keeping Your RV Smelling Fresh

You want to keep your RV smelling fresh? Here are two tips to keeping your RV smelling fresh.
These are a couple of the best DIY tips to do just that when you store it.
The first, I’m calling it the “RV Cocktail.” All of the products for it, you can pick up at the Dollar Store and it will help to keep your RV and your tanks/drains smelling fresh
The second tip is even easier, “Kitty Litter!” Use it in a container out in your main area when you store your rig and it will help to absorb odors in between RV trips!

“RV Toilet Cocktail” Recipe
8oz Baking Soda
Pine Sol
Fabric Softener
Ammonia
Water
In a two gallon container, pour 8oz of the baking soda in. Then mix about 8oz of warm water and stir. Once the baking soda is dissolved, add in 8oz of Pine Sol, Fabric Softener Ammonia and mix. Finally fill the rest of the container with water, stiffing until you reach the top. And then take the “cocktail” and pour it down all drains, leaving the bulk of it for the toilet. Open the toilet and pour in about a gallon, leaving some to fill about a quarter of the bowl when in storage.

Howdy, David!! Your suggestions for keeping an RV fresh-smelling are spot on... For NON-full-timers, that is! ;) If the mixture is going to be dumped every week, there's probably no harm/no foul. The problem for me, specifically with your "cocktail," is that the ammonia & pine cleaner would probably kill all the bacteria in the bottom of your tank... Even the "friendly" bacteria that's necessary to break down the ...uh... organic solids which pass through there. There are many, MANY tank treatments available that are much less toxic - for both you and the environment - much more effective in maintaining the balance necessary to keep things flowing and just as fresh-smelling as your mixture. Also: The ammonia/pine combo could adversely affect any sensors in the tanks. FYI. Watch your tail swing, keep th' greasy side down and keep it 'tweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeen th' ditches, Y'All!! ;)

Just an FYI - kitty litter helps pull moisture so it helps with the 'dank' 'musty' smells. I actually keep a small box in my bathrooms at home for that reason. You know how steamy things can get, it really helps.

Of all of the RV videos I’ve watched over the last couple of years, I haven’t seen anything about this mixture/cocktail or using kitty litter to help maintain freshness (🤔hmmm well maybe it’s because most of the videos I’ve watched are about FT RVing 🤨🤪). My cats use Fresh Step with Febreeze. Not only does it take care of "cat" smells, but the whole RV smells fresh, too.

My friends cat had seizures with the Fresh Step and other type of crystal liter. Come to find out it was the chemicals in there and cats always clean themselves by licking their paws. After she changed, her cat was back to good health again.

Thank you so much for the tip! Our trailer went from smelling horrible to smelling fresh with one treatment of your "cocktail"! We had to make one change to the recipe, replacing the ammonia with glass cleaner, as pure ammonia is no longer sold in Canada. We also learned that the grey tank was to blame for the stench - Never thought this could happen. Thank you again! 😀

The kitty litter is a great idea. Not only will it smell nice (as long as it isn't visited by any cats...) but it is also absorbs moisture from the air which will prevent mold and mildew. Great tip! And much cheaper than the Damp-Rid bags....

So the materials are, 1. 8oz of baking soda in its own container 2. 8 oz of ammonia in its own container (or glass cleaner as I saw in Carlos' Honest Opinions comment) then add to the baking soda. 3. 8oz of fabric softener in own container, then add to the baking soda and ammonia. 4. 8 oz of a pine sol like product (pine glo) in its own container and then mix with other products. 5. After everything is mixed in well, add water. Use warm water first then cold, stir very well. 6. P O U R it in ! I'll shall try this ! Thank you ! 😁

I have not had any issues with it, however don’t know for sure. I’ve been doing it for 5 years and it’s worked 😊

Careful mixing chemical cleaners, sometimes you could get a reaction with extreme heat and/or noxious gases.

Thanks some say no bleach its corrosive so as a cleaner i understand, but will try the baking soda it will clean out the tank and not do any harm no pine-sole here in New Zealand maybe at our Countdown supermarket will be pine disinfectant cheap as chips 2.50 and i think i will have to double your recipe as its only me

A bag of charcoal briquettes like you use for barbecuing works just the same as your kitty litter idea the only thing is can still use the charcoal briquettes for barbecuing once you get to where you're camping also keep a couple of briquettes in your refrigerator when it's not been running to keep the smell down in there too

Thanks for posting. Kitty litter works great but charcoal will also work. For really strong odors, coffee works good. I just leave some cheap brand coffee in an open container.

With all my years of camping I have never had a "smell" issue so I really cannot relate on any level! The only thing I ever did once we were "winterized" was to take a fresh box of fabric softener sheets in our favorite scent and toss sheets all over the place from front to back, side to side! I was once told that rodents didn't like the smell and will tell you with the exception of one year where we locked a chippy in, we never had a problem! Come spring I gathered them up in a plastic bag, hung it next to the dryer at home and used them up! No mixing, no hunting down assorted products, done! I guess it's whatever you are accustomed to doing!

Sorry to hear about your eye issue man. Time to think about LASIK. :-) my wife had it done and it has been life changing! Are you still using this recipe for keeping the rig fresh? My fam and I are weekend warriors like you, (but we have a 26’ travel trailer) and am looking for something that will keep it fresh while “Opa” (Our Place at _________) sits at the storage facility between trips. Calgon (water softener) and laundry detergent (about 1/4 c of each) in both gray and black tank. Fill tanks half way and drive around for a few miles so it can swish around. Then go to a dump station when it is not busy and really flush it good. Sounds like you have a Mt St Helen that is stuck in there. They say TP can harden like cement. Always use RV toilet paper...nothing else.

Is the Pine-Sol smell retained in this recipe at all? I love the smell of it, and not just for cleaning. If I couldn't use Pine-Sol to clean, I'd use a Pine-Sol scented air freshener after the fact, I love it that much.

Thanks for the video buddy nice job,quick question how do I get rid of Oder if I have no vents on top of trailer? I’ve tryed everything,laundery detergent baking soda vinegar,I even let the tank fill up as much as it could and even bought that wand you attach to hose HELP ME !!!!!!!!! Lol

Mark Casillas We have a 30 foot Bullet trailer. We shock the tank with 1/2 cup bleach and put that in a 5 gallon bucket then add warm water. Pour the whole thing into the toilet and into the black tank for 30 minutes. Knocks the bacteria down greatly. We then fill the tank with the toilet and flush it after it’s full. When we re-prep the tank we use liquid tank treatment, cup of softener, cup of laundry liquid soup in 5 gallon bucket and fill with warm water. I’d also fill and flush your tank several times. Make sure you don’t have a lot of sludge and debris in the tank. I’ve heard of someone also adding lots of ice on trips. Ice starts to melt and while driving it sloshes around and works on the debris in the tank. When you arrive, fill the tank and flush a couple times or until it appears relatively clean. Have you tried happy camper toilet chemical. We use it and never have any odor. The key is to never poo in you camper and never put any paper products in the black tank. Utilize the bath houses at the camp grounds. When boondocking use a simple bucket composting toilet.

@@hardtruth2039 Why get an RV? Using your 'own' toilet' is probably the biggest reason people get RV's and not tents. Proper sanitation and dumping, deodorizing are key. Then you have BM's a plenty without worry.

ok...so i had this problem. my vents were clear, flowing fine but i still had problems. i used to pour bleach in the toilet and it worked fine but i had to be pouring bleach every time i drained the tank. i went to wal mart and bought those tablets for the toilet. i drop one in the toilet every time it starts to smell, about every month or so. I watched a video once that stated that bleach would kill "the good bacteria" the type of bacteria that lives in the tank and controls the smells. i was left wondering what the heck they were talking about. the tablets are chlorine tablets for a house toilet and it DOES KILL ALL THE BACTERIA. i love the fact that i have ZERO bacteria in my RV tank. why would i want any bacteria. how often are those people emptying their tanks? that "good bacteria" sounds ok for a home septic system. i have had ZERO smell in my RV since. its cheap, the tablet doesnt drain when i drain my toilet. i know that because i have a see through connection and if it does drain out, its usually small and was needing a new one anyway. so all these techniques are cool but the simple stuff works, is pretty cheap and easy. no chemicals to mix, no strong bleach smells. NOTE: use the smaller tablets. i use THE WORKS. its the name of the product that i got at wal mart. the tab is the same size as the toilet flap and may need a little help getting through but it fell right in when i pushed it through with the toilet brush. try it out and make a video.

If these chemicals were SAFE to use initially in a RV Black Water tank WHY weren't they being used along time ago ? Is it because of the new RVs that are coming out with washers and dryer , that are now changing up what go's in your tank system?.

I enjoy your videos. We also own a Travato 59G, a 2022/23 model year. So I enjoy that about your more recent videos. We both travel in a Travato 59G. Find a good looking woman to travel with and your viewership will triple. No joke. A pretty woman will bring you a ton more subscribers. Also, target your content to B Van owners. Good luck, David! I’m not sure why you are so interested in growing your channel. You might want to ask yourself that question. Just a thought. Why is that so important to you? In order to increase your revenue through RU-vid, I’m pretty sure you would have to hit BIG numbers of subscribers and views/likes. Without a gorgeous female friend or partner, I’m not sure it’s possible. Your content is a lot better than many. You need a woman! Good luck! 😎

The kitty litter tip is good. I use pouches of activated bamboo charcoal which also keeps the air fresher and cleaner in my rv.

@@RVJedeye The pouches can be reactivated every month or so by putting them in the sun for a couple hours. They're good for a couple years and then can be added to garden or potting soil to enrich it.

@@janebray9392 Most Freezers only go to -5 F or -18c but the weather in Southern Ontario can easily reach -40 so the freezer is not a good indicator, a hydrometer may work but I would not use this in place of anti-freeze. I use RV antifreeze and I have no odor issues in the RV after months of sitting, You could pour some of the mix into the black tank as it does not matter if 32oz of what-ever freezes in the bottom of the tank but in the drains and bowl I would use antifreeze only...

The kitty litter is new to me as a air freshner, but it does make sense to pull moisture and possible mold smells out of a unit. I am not a fan of pine sole..but appreciate the recommendation to store the RV clean.

I like the Cat Litter Idea, however we have a Cat that travels with us! He has an attitude and does not like FRAGRANCE Cat Litter! It has to be Unsented or he won't use the Box. So, that will be off my list, unfortunately!

I only use my travel trailer several times a year. It and my boat are stored in a storage yard. I bought my TT new in 2013 and have never had an odor issue while in storage. While in use is another story! LOL! My sinks and shower have "P" traps in them so that pretty much takes care of any odor problems inside of the trailer. My black tank has never caused any odors while in storage. I do check on my TT and boat every so often, especially for any water leaks on the TT roof. Before putting my TT is storage, I make sure I flush out the fresh, grey (gray?) and black tanks completely.

All the expense of those products and you could easily buy a ozone generator for 50 bucks turn it on for 1 hour every 6-8 weeks while in storage and Not only will it smell great but you will not have a mold mildew problem.

Ok thanks for the tip. But does this work as well as the deep blue liquid I bought for that kerosene from my dealer. I am curious cause I am new to travel trailers and know enough to know I can learn new things all the time. But I have a tip for you, when you drain your tanks, be sure your drain hose has a nice down hill run from the tank hookup, to the drain in the ground, making sure the hose is not twisted up or has any loops in it! Just a nice flat slightly down hill angle works the best in as straight a line as possible. Take care stay safe. I will subscribe if you get back to me.

Think there would be any harm in mixing all the stuff together, just keep it in a sealed jar and then just have to add water and do the rest of the steps when ready to use?

Cindy you’re right... I don’t mix everything until I’m done cleaning up after a trip. Then right after I dump my tanks, then I pour in the cocktail 😊

Tina, I'll check but have been using this for awhile and it's working. The amount of Pine Sol, is small and it's diluted so it may be OK, but thanks for pointing it out and I'll ask around and do some research on the subject.
