Two tornadoes? Multi-vortex tornado appears in Ohio sky

Footage recorded by Kathy Henry in Bluffton, Ohio, shows two vortexes in a multi-vortex tornado moving across a field. Multi-vortex tornadoes have a main vortex that other (often invisible) vortexes spin around. They don't really merge with themselves or the main vortex, but they do strengthen and weaken on their own as the main tornado strengthens. #tornado #ohio #bluffton
“The video was taken as I was looking out the window of our house,” Henry told Storyful. “There was a tornado watch issued for our county so I was keeping an eye out. I noticed a funnel cloud forming so wanted to video, then a 2nd funnel cloud formed.”

Here's a question for the ages - are multi-vortex tornadoes really as rare as we currently believe them to be? Do we see them captured in film and on photograph so much because their appearance is so striking that more people will risk the chance to capture it? Or could it be that multi-vortex structures are alarmingly common as far as violent tornadoes are concerned? Could most, if not all EF3+ instances be multi-vortex in nature?

@GAND-OZZ
@GAND-OZZ 4 месяца назад
@@readyainefire9706 for 1, it doesn’t look like a multivortex. Usually you can see a large dirt circle around where the whole tornado is. Also, how far apart the tornadoes started gives you a a taste to how big the tornado actually is and it’s easily quarter-half mile long. That would make it nearly a wedge which is typically correlated with stronger tornadoes, which would make a dirt circle cloud even more obvious. And usually multivortex tornadoes don’t look like two whole tornadoes with great condensation funnels and defined edges, instead they look a little rough and without shape, and the main tornado usually comes down about quarter way before becoming multiple funnels. Instead, I think it’s a satellite coming off from an ef2/ef3 that’s getting sucked back. Dead man walking ‘nados come from multivortexes, not satellites. Therefore, it’s probably not a dead man walking. But hey, it’s a short video and it doesn’t give much information.

You’ve been watching too many news anchors. We’ve had periods in the past with way more tornadoes that were way more destructive. The only reason you think it’s worse now is because the news has it on blast all day long. Also because the Enhanced Fujita Scale is based on observations of damage to structures and manmade things. There are way more manmade things around to get damaged now, so people perceive it as a worsening of tornadoes because the news tells them that’s what is going on.
@fuzzydunlop7928

Thought we had a very rare instance of a true satellite tornado but nah, that's definitely multi-vortex as advertised. While true satellite tornadoes aren't as striking and evocative as seeing multiple vortices dancing around, they are quite rare and significant from a meteorological perspective. They're also often mis-identified. I've seen people use "satellite" and "multiple vortex" interchangeably and I've likely been guilty of it in the past.

That IS two independent tornadoes. It is NOT a multi-vortex tornado. A tornado’s “fuel” is water vapor. At the beginning: The thin one on the left is deposition driven tornado. Its “engine” is high up in the cold part of the cloud/storm. Its “engine” runs on converting water vapor directly to ice, releasing massive amounts of laten heat. They are very strong, but forming so high up diminishes their impact on the ground. They also have weak to no wind magnifying suction. The thicker one on the right is a condensation tornado. Its “engine” is much lower in the warmer part of the cloud/storm. Its “engine” runs on converting water vapor to water, rain, utilizing condensation nuclei. Massive amounts of laten heat is also released, but less than a deposition driven tornado. Deposition tornadoes tend to be wide and pack a lot of suction, as seen in this video. The suction magnifies the effects of its winds. The suction creates a vacuum above structures already impacted by the tornado’s winds-blowing AND sucking the roof off, so to speak. Cool video.
@Fahrenheit4051
@Fahrenheit4051 4 месяца назад
Never heard of that distinction before. How can you tell?
@k.chriscaldwell4141
@k.chriscaldwell4141 4 месяца назад
@@Fahrenheit4051 They are clearly not of one tornado. They each emanate from separate areas of the storm cloud. i.e. the left tornado is not a suction or eddy vortex emerging from a parent tornado. The tube nature of the left tornado is the give away that its a deposition driven tornado. Its short lived in this video. The right tornado has a wedgish-shape. A wedge-shape is the hallmark of a condensation driven tornado. “Wedgish b3cause its not very strong. But the primary give away that it’s a condensation driven tornado is its extreme upward suction. Notice all the soil and debris being pulled up into it. It’s not a very strong tornado wind wise, but its strong suction magnifies its weakish winds. I have a video of a larger and a bit stronger condensation tornado that sucks a farm building into it from a distance. The winds of the tornado are too weak at the distance to destroy the building, but its strong suction manages to do so.
@Fahrenheit4051
@Fahrenheit4051 4 месяца назад
@@k.chriscaldwell4141 So, I tried looking up the distinction between a condensation tornado and a deposition tornado, and couldn't find anything. Not saying you're wrong, Google gives me results for legal depositions. Do you have an article or website I could go to? I will agree that it doesn't look like a traditional multi-vortex tornado, but started either as separate tornadoes or a satellite. The smaller funnel does get pulled in and absorbed into the larger one.

not to be a total nerd rn lmao but this is a not a satellite tornado. It revolves around a larger, primary tornado and interacts with the same mesocyclone. Satellite tornadoes are not directly from the primary tornado and are not considered subvortices; the primary tornado and satellite tornadoes are considered to be separate tornadoes. We don't fully understand how they work yet or how they are made. But Such tornadoes tend to be anticyclonic and are often called couplets. Which we normal people like to call Sister tornados. What we're seeing is probably due to cyclic tornadogenesis. Sorry I love tornados lmao I don't want any of this to come poorly I just wanna educated (: and would love to be educated or corrected if wrong. But I'm like 99% sure I'm correct

That’s a realllly fast moving satellite tornado/vortice. It looks on par with the fastest moving tornado ever recorded and it was an also a satellite tornado. If you consider that satellite vortice an actual tornado then it’s definitely a contender for the fastest.

The Pilger tornado that is clocked as the fastest moving tornado was not a satellite tornado. It was a completely separate tornado. That's why it's considered the fastest tornado on record. The fastest satellite tornado or subvortex belongs to the El Reno tornado.
