Two Unrelated Nomadic Lion Coalitions Share A Buffalo Meal | Maasai Mara Safari | Zebra Plains

An unusual, but easily explained, sighting of two rival nomadic lion coalitions together as they share a buffalo meal
Late one morning drive we came across the Nomadic ex-Sand River male lion coalition (Buddha and Slaver aka Black and Ginger) watching a herd of buffalo it was hot and they looked tired so we left them to it. The next morning we returned to find they had actually caught a buffalo overnight not far fro where we let them. Unusually a second coalition of younger nomads (Chumvi and PiliPili that were born in the Enkoyonai pride) had joined them to feed and there was no animosity between the two rival groups. The hyena clan were also trying to get a share!
As both coalitions were nomadic, one pair having lost their territory and the other not yet old enough to have claimed one, there was no reason for the two groups to fight as there was enough food to go around. Nomadic males often tolerate other nomads and will sometimes even form coalitions together. A coalition formed with nomads is usually not as strong as those formed by males that have grown up together. In this case both groups went their separate ways after feeding.

About Rob The Ranger Wildlife Videos:
The purpose of the channel is to show what it is like to experience seeing wild animals on an African safari. Nature Documentaries are often highly edited to tell a story, wildlife safaris are not, and the idea here is to show the wildlife sightings the way they were seen. Safari tours in Africa are generally suitable for all ages and this channel can be considered an educational channel about incredible nature, some scenes in the nature videos may be more graphic than people are used to but this is the reality of nature and is what you would see if you were present on such a safari in person. Safaris in Kenya, South Africa, or any other African country are an unrivalled experience for anyone with a passion for nature, wildlife photography, and travel. Hopefully the animal videos on this channel can provide a glimpse into what the nature experience is like and encourage more people to take a wildlife safari one day. Make sure to subscribe and enable ALL notifications!

Sharing is better than fighting to death....TEAM-UP and become even stronger,I guess the fact that they are still young, made sharing possible,much older males would not tolerate each other.....Who said young are"stupid"!!!!!They know being nomads is difficult.GREAT SCENE.

Rob , Does TB have an impact in your neck of the woods ? Is there any ways of dealing with it or eradicating it ? I believe it derives from domestic cattle initially to buffalo who probably graze near or drink in the same areas and obviously the scavengers that get it too ? Any feedback if you have the time when you get around to it would be appreciated! Thanks 🙏 for the great video ! I learned something and enjoyed it, I sure crave the knowledge out there , Born in the wrong place it seems , Kevin Standow

As yet TB has had little impact in the Mara/Serengeti ecosystem, perhaps because cows have been here with the Maasai for enough time that the wildlife has built an immunity? In kruger livestock had been kept away from the wildlife for so long that TB ran rampant through the populations when it did arrive but now we are seeing a lot more resistance to the disease

They don't look like rival coalition's. They look like four brothers from the same mother. ;) They look the same age they have the same manes and the same coloring. Good to see them eating so peacefully because male lions at a kill are often vicious and violent with each other. If somehow these for males are split up into two rival coalitions of two then they should team up and they would be almost unbeatable. Thanks for the video.

Hey Rob great vlogs enjoy always watching them Why not game reserve feeding these lions with killed animal so they get healthy and put weight on? Again we love your Vlogs Sir!!
@robtheranger
@robtheranger 4 года назад
The reason the older males are so thin is that their teeth are worn out and they cannot eat properly, feeding them wouldn't help. Feeding the younger males would cause them to become lazy and even less efficient at getting their own food,basically causing a never ending cycle of humans feeding them, then they would no longer be wild animals and may as well be in captivity.

just the scrap you see them take in the video. What makes the hyenas so succesful is their ability to make a meal from what others leave behind, so when the lions were done and moved off the hyenas would have been able to get the bones open for the nutritious marrow

Can someone tell me - do any of the animals (be they the herbivores or the carnivores) ever simply just die of old age??? Or is it that the herbivores effectively all get caught and eaten before they get old and likewise, that when a lion is too old to catch something to eat it dies of hunger before old age???

Starvation is the wild equivalent of old age, animals teeth wear down with age so if they don't get killed by a predator or catch a disease that is how they will die.

Nomadic lions aren’t as aggressive towards hyenas because they have no pride of their own to protect yet. Best believe if these lions had a pride or prides and Cubs nearby they would run the hyenas out of there

They are welcoming because they are no Lioness around to mate. If they had a pride or cubs different story line.

They must be all brothers. They don't fight for food
@robtheranger
@robtheranger 5 лет назад
No, they are two unrelated groups of two. Neither group has a territory or lionesses to fight over and there is enough food for all of them. No reason to fight

This video is boring. Would be more interested if you show the actual hunt by these lions. Thank you.

Instead of 2 rival coalitions of 2 lions each, perhaps the 2 original coalitions had already 'agreed' to form a coalition of 4? Then there'd be nothing strange about this sighting of the 4 feeding together.

No, they were dominant in the south of the Mara and the young boys come from the North
