@@sujithsom5459 ahhh that's how it always works and eagles will take them as adults without a second thought so your point is highly moot. The fact that he has a bunch of ducks running around is proof that birds of prey are not a major obstacle to his flock. And since it's fairly clear that you don't actually have much experience with this the biggest threat is in fact in most cases owls. Those sneaky little bastards can wreck A Flock in no time.

@@deannelson9565 you clearly did not understand what I wrote. Bigger ducks are too heavy to lift for eagles and hence they do not attack that is why they are running free. smaller chicks are easy prey

You clearly don't understand that you're talking about something you clearly have no clue with an eagle will Target and kill adult geese on a regular basis hell certain populations of eagles actually specialize in this so those little farm ducks would be nothing to them! The ducks on this Farm could be picked up by a red tail hawk let alone a bald eagle and God forbid a golden were to show up there even more powerful than the balds. Having to deal with eagles for many years and there ain't a damn bird on this farm that the eagles would have the slightest bit of difficulty on in the adult form let alone the little fuzz ball stage and needless to say a little bit of mesh over top of a outside enclosure makes it instantly impossible for them to get in and not overly complicated to do. But i can guarantee you if he keeps putting those birds out in the open pasture even as adults at some point a bird of prey will discover them and we'll make a lunch of one of them. Out where I live it would have already happened because it's an extremely common occurrence out where he is out on the East Coast the Eagles are probably far less programmed for eating ducks and geese.

That's a cool idea. Given how many I have picked this spring, we actually will have less next year because of consumption.

They are a perenial and come back bigger and leafier(sp?) every year for up to 15 years. As long as you just dont let them seed you will be aces. Also, they will pollinate themselves if you want seeds. Been an staple for people for millenia so it is not unheard of except recently. Pretty full-proof "crop" to grow.

My best trick for black flies is use a mosquito net. Usually when I'm outside working at this time of year, I'll have one on over my ballcap. I'll let Allison know!

We're doing it for mostly meat, with a few guard geese/breeders selected from the flock.

Which breed?

All poultry benefit from succulent feed such as grass, mustard or carrot greens, Swiss chard, etc. We feed ours kitchen scraps from preparation of human food, and they get a hydrating meal of scraps with cooked oatmeal in the middle of the day, even in summer. In winter, this meal is great to warm and hydrate them in the coldest part of the day. They love getting different kinds of feed.
