This video is about the two week wonder, as Bob Glidden called it. The Undefeated 1978 Pro Stock Fairmont. The video has myself asking Bob questions, and him answering them. The original interview was from Competition Plus, Legend series. This is my favorite Bob Glidden car. I documented some earlier racing with Bob Racing racing Dyno Don at the 77 World Finals, Segway into the 1978 Pro Stock season. This video documents the 1978 pro Stock Tour, and all the NHRA Pro Stock races that the Fairmont was undefeated in. The tour started with Bob racing his 78 Ford Pinto, at the start of the season. He raced the Pinto at the opener on February 12, 1978 at the Auto Club raceway, where he won. The next stop was Gainesville, March 12, 1978, where he lost to Frank Iaconio. Loaded and headed to State Capital Raceway, Where he took the win on April 30, 1978. Next stop on the tour, was National Trail Raceway, June 11, 1978, Bob lost to Richie Zul. The next race was the July 16, 1978, the Summer Nationals, at Englishtown Raceway, Where Bob debuted the Undefeated 1978 Ford Fairmont. At this race he took out the Bill Grumpy Jenkins Vega, driven by Larry Lombardo. The next 4 races were, Sanair Super Speedway,(8/6/78), Indianapolis Raceway Park, The Coveted US Nationals, (9/4/78), Pacific Raceways (9/24/78), and The World Finals, at Ontario Motor Speedway( 10/8/1978). Bob Glidden won every one of those 5 consecutive races. These wins brought him and the Undefeated Fairmont, the NHRA Pro Stock Championship for 1978. The car only ran 5 races. Bob Glidden you are a Pro Stock Champion........

An honest to God legend. As humble as could be, always gave credit to those around him (family or not), lost with the same dignity he had when he won, respectful of his competition - and the consummate racer. There was a saying that went around back then that went, "Glidden could run a Sears lawn tractor and still be number one" Still took the championship with an entirely new car/combination (The Arrow) with the same authority as one of his Fords - with no prior experience with the Plymouth(s). He was the embodiment of the best of the Pro/Stock class. Race In Peace, Bob you were the best of the best.

As a diehard Chevy fan (until the late 80's when I bought a new Ford) it bugged me that Glidden had so much power. Eventually I bought a '59 Ford P/U that had a transplanted 351C from a 1970 Cougar (small chamber heads). I'd built several SBCs but after seeing the size of the Cleveland ports and valves I understood.

One of drag racing's greatest racers of all time in the P/S division. Certainly one of best to carry the Ford banner. I literally almost ran into him at the 1978 US NATIONALS. As I was walking back to the pits,I met a beautiful lady wearing very short, shorts! I turned around to watch her walk away, & as I turned back to walk on,there was Bob about 4 feet away! Other than standing behind the ropes in his pit, watching them work on his car, that was the closest I ever got to him. I'm 68 now & that was 43 years ago. I think it's about time Fords got back into P/S & people like the Glidden's, Gap & Rousch,Dyno Don & others got back into racing! Fast Fords Forever! RIP to all the great legends that have left us,yearning for others to fill their shoes.❤

The 1978 Don Hardy Fairmont was truly a game-changer in Pro Stock. To stay competitive, you had to keep one eye on the NHRA rule book and the other on your pocketbook. The contrast between how Bob Glidden responded to the wheelbase advantage vs how Jack Roush did. The famed, "Tijuana Taxi" was the hit of the show, visually. Glidden's Fairmont however, stole the show with its performance. One benefit of the longer wheelbase Fairmont vs the Pinto was stability. While the Pinto's and the Vega's grabbed all the attention because of the big power/small car uniqueness. They were a handful to drive. I have to correct one thing that you stated in your content. During the era of the Pinto's and Vega's in NHRA Pro Stock, Chrysler struggled on the national scene for at least 2 reasons. No one had made a serious effort to develop a competitive small block engine that could compete with the Cleveland's and the SBC's. The other was the comparable small cars that Chrysler had during the time, like the Dodge Colt, weren't made in America. So, they were not allowed to compete in Pro Stock as per the NHRA rules at the time. Don Carlton, Sox & Martin and the Rod Shop team had Dodge Colts ready to go but the NHRA relegated them to the Comp eliminator class. Which left Chrysler with the Hemi Duster and Dart which were uncompetitive under the lbs per cubic inch format. Please correct me Tim if my information was historically inaccurate in any way. I am definitely with you on getting Wally Booth to visit Drag Boss Garage. That will be an awesome live stream to say the least.

Also sub said they were going to hook me up with Wally Booth, can't wait for that. I saw your email, but no time to read yet. Thanks for the help. I also talked with Don Hardy jr. The way you narrate this makes me believe we love Bob's legacy equally and I relate to you my brother. My father and I would watch him all throughout the 80s and early 90s on the American Sports Cavalcade, waiting for my grandfather to call and brag after Bob would break any et or mph record and also after winning the events. He sold Fords for 40 years and loved them and thier racing legacy as much as anyone I've ever known. His favorite story to tell anyone was witnessing Connie Kalitta become the only triple crown winner in nitro racing and he did it with a CAMMER. You would have loved talking to him. He could recite nearly any record or win of the Ford teams up until "Father-Time" was outrunning him. My heart loves this video, not only for your factual and concise presentation and editing, but the passion you have that shines straight through the production. Your efforts and passion are appreciated by this Ford lover, on multiple levels. Thanks man 💙

And I have said it many times, that I would watch wise world of sports and see occasional pro stock race if I was lucky. Happens to be in the mid 70s, and get a glimpse of Glidden kicking booty. I think he was what made me want a Cleveland, and led to my obsession with this particular engine. Facts you stated about Kalitta I did not know. Good job, Tim! If the phrase wasn't already taken, the Bob Gildden (and family) story could be titled, "Against all odds." I was fortunate to have witnessed nearly half the races you documented here. Dyno Don got the ball rolling in '72 -finally figured out his Cleveland's oiling issues by '73 (He told me he spun mains in 5 or 6 engines before then.) He was the scourge of the match-race circuit and had a banner year in '77 NHRA competition. Wayne Gapp and Jack Roush won regularly in '74 and '75. A slew of other racers jumped on the Cleveland-Ford bandwagon with some success. The saga wouldn't be complete without them. But it was the Gliddens that flew the Ford Banner the longest and were the winningest in Pro-Stock Drag Racing during the era. From their Pro debut at the NHRA World Finals at Ontario in '72 through the 1980's, the Glidden machines were the ones to beat.

First time I saw a Cleveland based Pro Pinto run was Dyno Don's. It was at a match race against Jenkins and his SRD Vega at Connecticut Dragway in '72. Best two of three. It was even. On the third run Dyno lost his engine and Jenkins won the match. They were supposedly at NHRA legal weight. I believe the E.T.'s were 9.20's or .30's. The runs were accomplished with manual 4-speeds. Dyno vowed he'd be back in '73. He didn't disappoint! Not long after, at the '73 NHRA Winternationals in February, Dyno won the event running, I believe 9.30's. That was still with the manual 4-speed. About a month later in March, Dyno won the NHRA Gatornationals with an National Record E.T. of 9.02 along with a National Record speed of 150.50. That was the first time the Lenco was used in National Competition. B.T.W. Dyno and Jenkins were back at Connecticut Dragway later that year and this time, true to his word, Dyno whipped him! Again, supposedly running legal weight, Dyno laid down an 8.98 and a 8.95. I believe Jenkins best was 9.10. I was barely 20 and got Dyno's autograph that day AND got hooked-up with Connecticut's-own Ed Prout. Ed, who would soon become the NHRA National record-holder in A/Altered with his injected Boss 429 Bantam roadster and eventually my racing partner! Capital Raceway in Maryland claimed that Dyno ran the first legal weight 8 second run (8.98) at a points meet at their track later that year. Don't know about that. It's like a State claiming the first hamburger originated with them! Fun times and great memories!
