I remember seeing these awesome turbine powered hydroplanes with my dad (RIP pops) as a kid in the mid 90's. While we are much more into racing cars I'll never forget the sound & speed of these babies. Was a magnificent sight to behold.
Everything BUD RACING was cool at one time, I even built a BUD ESTES model rocket and everything Budweiser from cups too t-shirts and shorts. When they were bought by a foreign company everything went down, but it was fun while it lasted.

Remember this one?? "The same can be said of the Miss Bardahl, which won more races (24) in the decade of the sixties than any other team. Between 1957 and 1969, Miss Bardahl accounted for 27 race victories, five Gold Cups, six National Championships, and was the first to average 116 miles per hour in a heat of competition (in 1965)." Seems slow by today's hydroplanes!
I'm 58 yrs old, grew up in Burien, south of Seattle. As a kid I can remember hearing the piston powered boats racing, even that far away from Lake Washington. The back and forth between the Bud and The Pac (Miss Pay-n-Pack) as well as the Atlas Van Lines were epic. The Bud was faster in the corners, but the Pac was faster in the straights... set up classic and exciting racing that tested the skill of both pilots to get the absolute best out of their machines. The racing was exciting, and unfortunately dangerous. Thanks for the memory.
De Moines, Washington. Miss Budweiser kicked butt in our bay with a giant turbo diesel the same year as, "Support your Local Sheriff" with James Garner. 1970? I drank Budweiser for my entire life until last year when they went Queer.
@@matthewdufur5489 I'm sorry man but I've got to call you out on the "queer" comment... what, do you think only "straight" people drank Budweiser? That if you keep drinking Bud you're "gonna turn gay"? Seriously, what do you care what brand people drink? Is this how you define yourself? Tell me how ANY of this effects your life, other than to illustrate how easy it is for others to manipulate you. Fearful, prejudiced people GOT YOU TO CHANGE WHAT BEER YOU DRINK... that's the only direct effect other people had on YOU... THEY got you to stop drinking your favorite beer, not "queer" people. Feel less gay now? Please, see this for what it is... un-American hate.
My uncle Bernie Little was a Miss Budweiser pilot and owner. He and my aunt Jane were truly amazing people. Thanks for the footage showing his name on the boat. Chip was an amazing pilot too. He used to take me dirt bike riding.
I remember at Tri Cities in the 80's a friend and I were talking to Bernie through the chain link fence that enclosed the back of the pit area where the owner's motorhomes were parked. My friend commented on Bernie's gold watch, Rolex I think and he handed it to us through the fence to look at and try on. Fricken amazing memory. If we had turned and ran he probably would have jumped the fence and kicked our asses.

@@stevenmorrison4692 that's not a replica from what I understand. The guy that owns it is a complete asshole, but I'm pretty sure that's the real boat.
Both the Bud boats from when Bernie died are still racing today. This boat was converted to a standard design because it just didn’t perform as well as expected. It went on to win quite a few races even. Then with the dissolution of the Budweiser team both the boats were bought by Formula Boats, and races for them for a few years. I can’t remember off hand who owns them now but they still show up from time to time.
I was a race mechanic for a few years on lesser teams during this era. Man I miss it! But when I had kids it just required too much time away from them. Always loved this boat.

me too. Family friend in Windsor had a big cabin cruiser and we watched from the river one year. Used to love the sounds of both the Grand Prix and the boats in summer. We still get Indy cars on Belle Isle but the sound isn't the same.
I was a pit reporter for our radio station who co-sponsored the Miss Rock 99.9 Seattle along with the sister station Rock 106 Spokane for the two races in Tri-Cities and Seattle Washington for three great years 1993-1996, this brings ALL the memories back, thank you
Sometimes you don't realize how much you miss something until you don't have it and then you see a video of it here on RU-vid..... Back in the day the iogp boats used to come and race in Vallejo and benicia California the night before the races they would do a nice parade down main Street good old days indeed. 😎👍

The part at 5:06 in the video is awesome. You won't see that shot in racing. Chip was having a little fun and showing off. The people that happened to be out on their boats that day were very lucky!
I remember way back when I was a young man walking into Bernies office, full of trophies that were won with the Budweiser hydroplanes, there were so many trophies that it consumed the whole office, many on shelves, on the floor, everywhere. Bernie had a huge Golden American Eagle standing about 2 feet tall with it's wings spread out sitting on the corner of his large office desk and pictures of several Miss Budweiser Hydroplanes on the walls, I remember the mention of the Miss Budweiser hydroplane having or getting a helicopter turbine engine. My aunt was Bernie's personal secretary for many years and we were given a full tour of the facilities, at this facility Bernie actually had his office on the second floor of a massive warehouse full of cases of Budweiser beer and other Anheuser-Busch brands if memory serves me well., 1000's of them all in a environmentally controlled warehouse, I've never seen so much beer in all my life, I'll never forget that day. RIP Bernie
The drivers/pilots of these unlimited hydroplanes were beyond cool.. Dean Chenoweth, Chip Hanauer, Tom D’eath, Bill Muncey, Mickey Remund, Jim Kropfeld.. they could have been astronauts.
@@gregoryhodge9452 Yeah? Well, people hear lots of things. Chip had a major concern that the Bud team cared more about the performance than the safety of the driver.
Back in the 90s I was living in Florida and I got to see Ms Budweiser up close and see her race in Tampa Bay!! My son and I had a great day that day oh Justin got so sunburned even with sunscreen but he never said anything other then how much this boat was so Kool.. so I built a 48" long rc of Ms Budweiser and had a blast at the lake for some years!!.. good times
We were in Crescent City California having breakfast and talked to the Bud. team. Got a couple picture's of the Hydroplane and truck sitting next to us. It was shinny bright! They were nice people!!!
In the early 1990’s the Miss Bud and the Budweiser Clydesdales came to my town. They set up the boat for display and the Clydesdales paraded through town in a parade. It was awesome.
@@The_HouStoner Yes they are. Walmart keeps a few in the stock room for the extra large _Women of Walmart_ to ride around on while shopping, when the battery powered scooters can't hold them.
Between 1963 and 2002, Bernie Little's boats participated in 354 Unlimited hydroplane races. His team finished in the top-3 a total of 230 times with a record 134 victories.
that was awesome! glad it was a strait forward vid with no stupid fails and crap. tired of that. thank you. my god that was 27 years ago. im old now cause I remember that beast. used to watch back in day
As the resin said before me those were the good old day Budweiser, Atlas Van Lines , Circus Circus ,Oh Boy Oberto’s , Jolly Ranchers , Miller Highlife , and many more !!!!😎👍🏻🇺🇸🦅
I remember them! It was always hot that August weekend, and many of us watched the races while soaking in the water at the shoreline of Lake Washington…
What an absolute weapon. The way it sits so flat when cornering is nuts. I'd be so worried I'd hit a rogue wave or chop. Takes a special kind of person to do that.
Better days for hydro racing! Last month's Seattle race had five -- count-em, FIVE -- boats. And that's about how many races make a season. Bud vs Muncie was awesome! But, Luddite that I am, I've gotta say they sounded so much better before turbines!
Jimmy Shane grew up in my town racing boats with his whole family. I’ve been friends with his parents for years. Every one of them have been APBA champions.
I sure miss those old days when they race the piston power boats and my favorite boat was the Miss Budweiser and I loved the sound it made. I was at the Tri City and saw when it crash and the driver got killed.
Growing up in Del Mar, California we used to go every year to Mission Bay in San Diego to watch the Thunderbolts race. These boats would pass by us only a few hundred feet away.... awesome power, shook the ground. Before the races during warmup and trial runs we could hear them from my front porch...30 miles to the north.
I love that sound... A jet boat on full song. I was lucky enough to be around when the Merlin's gave way to the jets. Unlimited Hydro .... A long time ago.
Anyone else remember the miss Pay n Pak or the Squire Shop or Atlas VanLines boats that put on real races along side the mighty Bud. Ah for the good ole days of thunder clap of the waves and real roostertails!!
Miss Pay n Pak, was so dominant every time I heard them call a Race! I still remember seeing the Rooster tails as we crossed Lake Washington! Long ago at 11 Yrs. old
I remember Wilwock grinding and polishing on his own propellers when he rode for Pico American dream. We used to cut them on our (back then fancy 5x mill. )
I remember seeing Ms Bud in Barrie Ontario, in a compound perched on its angled trailer...watched over by an awesome Bull Mastiff named Stitches....1999...good memories
Open faced helmet & no neck restraint LMAO. The pair on these dudes were legendary LOL. Every time it starts to turn I think it's gonna flip over. Can only imagine what it's like to be on the water & have this thing go by at up to 230mph, f'n bonkers.
@@52ownsyou Yeah like most older motorsports safety was an after thought LMAO. I mean in F1 back in the day you had driver's dying in competition every year, sometimes multiple. Yet there's always another dude with the need for speed who will take his place.
I saw an interview with Chip Hanauer where they asked him" what goes thru your mind when the boat blows over?" His answer, 1: my day is over 2: how bad is this gonna hurt!
I remember seeing Bernie little at the Texas State Fair! His boat at the time was on display and we talked to him! I was no more than 10 years old so some 50 years ago! Boat racing was always on TV back then!
Hands down the sexiest thing on the water without a pulse. Growing up in the NW I’ve seen these beauties on the water at Seafair many times in this era. This was the pinnacle. RAD!
I remember as a kid in the 70’s..we lived near a freeway that runs through southern Idaho. There was a Stuckey’s about a mile from our house. All of these boats would be stopping there enroute to the Burley (IDAHO) regatta. They were fascinating pieces of machinery. 🤙

Crazy to see vid of a memory. I was in the pits there in Seattle with his nephew. Then over to the oberto with another friend, grandson to the Oberto jerky family.
Different purpose, but it's amazing how small Ken Warby's "Spirit of Australia" was by comparison. Still the fastest boat ever, remarkably a record that's stood for 45 years.
Spirit of australia was a slightly different animal. It was built for straight line speed, and not circuit racing And she didn't have a gearbox like the unlimited - the U class uses a T55 Lycoming turboshaft engine out of a chinook helicopter and a gearbox to drive a cavitating surface drive propeller (hence the MASSIVE roostertail) Spirt of Aus used the thrust of the westinghouse J34 engine (the same engine used in a pair in the F2H Banshee jet fighter) The form factor of the j34 turbojet engine was quite a bit slimmer than the Lycoming T55 turboshaft mill in the Unlimiteds.
Back in the early 90's I was a speedboat designer. I had drawn up a wing on the front of my tunnel Hull boat and was the 1st to ever come up with this type of design. They neighbor used to come over and see what we were up to, Jeff Knudsen and he stole my idea. I owned Hurricane Performance Boats then, he worked for Jennings Corp then. It was an adjustable wing in between the front picklfork tunnel and I could set the night to fly above the waves and the bow would fly steady at any altitude I wanted. It was originally designed so they would not flip over. I feel pretty ripped off. And it would be cool to get credit were credit is due. I wish Jeffy would have never been let in the door....
My dad used to build wire harness and some other small electrical stuff for Fred back in the Pico American Dream days and the sister boat that would have KISW on it for the Seattle round. I got to go with him to the shop a few times as a kid.
I grew up outside Seattle in Maple Valley... This boat with Chip at the Helm was absolutely futuristic! When the team rolled into town for Seafair shit was about to get real! I still think this is the sexist ship to ever hit the water! 💪
We used to go every year to Mission Bay to thunder on the bay and we used to get the party with these guys boy are they fun at night they're fun during the day I miss those days
One of the last races my father and I went to before moving to Alaska was A Seattle Hydroplane Race and from that time on was on the tv. R.I.P DAD I'VE ALWAYS WILL REMEMBER OUR LAST RACE AND MEETING BERNIE LITTLE THEN AND LATER ON WHIL IN SEATTLE WASHINGTON ONE OF THE BIGGEST RACES EVER IN SEATTLE...
MAN OH MAN do i love racing!! Been a big open wheel race fan mosta my life. But myself Unlimed Hydroplane's get my heart pounding. Don't know why the popularity never exploded. Real race cars don't have doors windsheild's or hood's.. That auta piss somebody off for sure. lOL
