This is a non-choreographed knight fight with full speed and full force behind every strike and thrust. But calm down the last 2 strikes hit the ground next to his head. The poleaxe from the video is a safe training tool from Dominus Gladius: dominusgladius.com/poleks-ver.1/ The onehanded axe was only blunt and left a big dent in my helmet. 😢 Stay safe and dont kill your training partners.
@@dequitem pardon my French but that is the most casual badass thing I've ever heard a person say. What educational sources would you recommend if I wanted to learn the skill of making a full suit of functional armor? I can think of a lot of reasons why it would be cool to learn that skill.
There is no better source, than the shape of originals. The best option is to buy expensive armor from realy good talented smith's and try to recreate them with try and error. There are some tips and tricks, but you can find better videos than mine about smithing on channels like world of armor / armory smith...
@@bakters yeah wehave gunfights but its more personal going melee against a single person, youve got the ability to notice the surroundings and what youre doing there, would be pretty crazy being in one
@@dcvendex4166 There was a sword youtuber from Poland, who told a story of participating in a duel in an ancient city. I believed him. There's also a writer of history fiction, who claimed to have issued a symbolic challenge to another writer. The other guy declined, so he was free to admit to it. I also believed him. Makes me wonder, how many "accidents" happened when the other guy accepted. More than we suspect, I'm pretty sure of it.
The use of color is fantastic, too many depictions of medieval society are just muddy, grey and miserable when by all accounts it was far from. Color played a far greater significance than we give it today.
Indeed. Even the armor was more colorful than we give it credit, since a lot of historical suits had decorative finish that was later prepared aware by victorians, and this video shows how even white armor can be a shit of color, all reflective and shining bright.
You’ve carved out such a fascinating niche in the HEMA community by putting into practice a lot of the theoretical conjecture around medieval arms and armor. Like how long swords are not useless against plate armor, maces don’t demolish solid plate, and that a good amount of wrestling is needed to find a place to put your dagger into. While not a 1:1 for obvious reasons, I don’t get how anybody in good faith can complain about the testing and sparring conclusions. Love your content, and stay safe (or at least as safe as you can be whacking each other with flails, Morningstars, and polearms).
@@dequitem From my own personal experience, you don't want to get hit by a mace in full plate. The things are expensive, and taking out all those dents afterwards is a chore 😀
Fighting in a field of beautiful flowers like the final boss fight in a Souls game lol. Though on a more serious note, the quiet sounds of nature juxtaposed with the clashing and human exertion, really emphasize that combat IRL is a lot less glorious than it's made out to be and a lot more tragic in the end.
0:49 The "wait for it" fakeout where you raise the weapon and then simply wait a tiny moment before striking, is one of the most fascinating techniques for weapon-based sports like HEMA and belegarth. Watch the motion of the shield and observe that it would've optimally blocked the strike had it come at the expected time (about 0.25 seconds earlier)
Just saw your video posted on Reddit. Had to check out the source because I couldn't believe this is actually real and not a video game or Unreal Engine. Absolutely stunning, left me speechless. It's incredibly gorgeous to look at. I've subscribed, can't wait to binge watch all your channel.
absoutely beautiful!! The amazing flower field contrasting with the battling knights looks incredible. I would love to see some shot variety, like close ups, mediums, and extra wide shots. It would really elevate the cinematography. The shot that's set lower and has some flowers in the foreground is gorgeous. Also the title Blood Flowers is perfect. With both the dark red flowers and the blood from the fighters.
There is a difference between fighting between friends who know and care for each other, where neithere care about who wins and then two strangers compeeting.
@@imeantherearethedarktownsy5210 man, my dear wife once knocked me silly with a full force war flail blow to the head that broke both flail and helmet. What's a mere few axe whacks betwen friends?
Awesome cinematography! Even the subtle detail of throwing small rocks as flying particles after the impact while lying on the ground looks cool haha. Would be so epic if you made an hour or two- long film, this channel is doing way better than modern cinema.
I am a big fan of medieval knights. I play games such as: For Honor, Chivalry 2 and Kingdom Come....just discoveref this channel and I can say that this is something magnificent. Realistic fights, camera work, lightning and colors...just wow. This is better than any movie I watched, true piece of art.
I've always understood how brutal and damaging these weapons can be, but it's only through videos like yours that I've truly begun to understand just how resistant and durable armour truly was and is.
Very good video! The fight was very nice to watch and a few hits were really insane... The ending in particular was very creative and well done. The video has my like.
I always love it when yall fight!!! Especially the one where he throws his shield down to finish you..... Assuming it's the same guy in the Kievan-Rus type armor.
That hit really give him a concussion there , also I wonder if he's planning to get another strap on his heater shield, I don't think it goes well if he doesn't have a strap to rest on his shoulder to get ease of control from his shield.
His strab system is very good against swords and pointy thrusting weapons, because you can outstretched your arms, but it didn't work so well against strikes. Even with a poleaxe, the most dangerous part is the spike on top, so I think it's a good idea if you use a onehanded weapon. But of course I prefer a twohanded grip on the weapon and a strabed shield around my neck.
@@BlommaBaumbart the axe hat the same weight like a mace, so his only chance was to hit my head. He managed it and left a dent but didn't knocked me out. On a historical axe the upper side would be sharp and narrow for thrusts this can be nasty for gabs but mail armor can stop it.
Wdym his only chance was to hit you in the head or grapple? You have way more options with a shield and 1 handed weapon. He should’ve been able to relatively easily block your big swings and counter with the (theoretically) more nimble battle axe. Which should have enough force to damage anything it hits, since the axe is pretty much a mace with a sharpened edge. If given the choice, I’d much rather the shield and axe over the poleaxe.
I find the size of the weapons the most fascinating. As a consumer of media, my obvious impression was “anime size”. But that would be exhausting, and you don’t need something very large to kill a man with.
Great video and the landscape choice, poppies has great significance to the fallen soldiers in the war and you include them here as a background Beautiful.
I swear these fights beat 99.99% of what Hollywood does. This feels VERY intense, much more high-stake, and just plain dangerous than the lame stuff we get in movies and series. An example that springs to mind is during any large battle scene with many foes around, the protagonist deflects an incoming blow, sidesteps, then a single slash across the back of the foe instantly drops them dead. So lame. Hearing only the wind, wildlife, and waling away of the fighters adds to the dire feelings of desperation, seriousness, and finality of these encounters. I can't help but think this channel is gonna blow up. It just needs more eyes on. The quality is clearly visible. The rest (of the success) should follow.
my favorite book i stole was this training manual that said 'a decent spearman should on open ground be able to hold off three good swordmen indefinantly with out support"
Gorgeous video, very intense and i would say also really instructive fight, specifically because of the shortness of the battle. We are so used to movie medieval fights where people could stab each other for hours while you just demonstrated that blunt trauma can KO you in a matter of seconds. Anyway i would like a video about your safety standard, rules and training partner... Some hits make me concerned about your safety and, you know, i would like to keep watching new videos.
Fuckin brutal and beautiful to see, people really have NO IDEA HOW MUCH DEVASTATING BRUTAL VIOLENCE A HUMAN IS CAPABLE OF. No electricity=90 million ☠️
