Really impressive miniture work, in many ways it's more impressive than present day CGI.

Wow. Never saw this footage before. I loved the 53 movie and always looking for memorabilia on the film. Thanks for the upload

Is that a flying machine??? "No, no...it's supported on three invisible magnetic repulsion legs" I was 10 years of age when "War" was released...and today I still love that film...my other two all-time favorites are: "When Worlds Collide", 1951...also George Pal, and "Day The Earth Stood Still" , 1951. "War" and "Day" were remade some years ago...and the were complete disasters! Another great one is "The Time Machine"... G. Pal, 1960.

Amazing. Back when everyone would see the same show at the same time and talk about it. Now it's like "Have you seen The Boys yet?" "No, what's it on?" "Amazon Prime." "Oh. I haven't got Amazon Prime." "Well you should. The Boys is amazing." "So I should buy a network for one show?" "Errm..."

Don't ask me where I read it, but the visible wires were discussed by the people doing the 4K restoration for the Criterion release. Although it was possible to remove them, it was felt that the wires were part of film's charm, that people would be upset at meddling with the work of the people who made the film. The same discussion took place regarding erasing the wires in the flying monkeys scenes in the restoration of "The Wizard of Oz." In both cases, it was decided to not remove something people have gotten used to seeing. It's like the old saying goes: "Han shot first."

They did such a great job designing and building those ships. That Martian pod turning, then zeroing in, the ray noise building like some otherworldly buzzing thrum....then that super cool high pitched rhythmic blast of heat rays....stupendous. Beautiful neon emerald green Ship lights and those green skeleton beams.....awesome! I had this on VHS, then bought the dvd....wow! The scene when the priest gets clobbered....you can clearly see all the strings raising the ships....not visible on VHS. Strange to see on a movie you watched dozens of times on the old style format the movie was made for. Just as great.....interesting to see how they did it.

Beautifully designed effects. Love them but wish they'd shot them at a higher frame rate... Apart from that, classic and iconic...

This is very cool! I've never seen this before. I wish it was included on the DVD. The effects looked amazing in the film and still hold up today. I read somewhere that when the film was converted to video, it unfortunately made the wires suspending the ships extremely visible. You can really see them on the currently available DVD version.

@@TheStockwell Very interesting! Well I agree. I actually like that you can see the wires! In the bluray version, they did erase them out.

@@outsider238 Spielberg did some digital work on "E.T." and regretted it. He now endorses the original, untampered-with version. There were things he didn't like when "Jaws" was first released. When he finally had the chance and technology to fix things, he decided to leave them they way they'd always been. When Artists have second thoughts, things get interesting. When The Beatles abandoned what became the "Let It Be" album, Phil Spector was brought in. "The Long and Winding Road" was supposed to be a small, simple ballad. Spector added strings, a choir, and brass. Paul McCartney was horrified. Decades later, he fixed what he considered to be Spector's overblown assault on a defenseless little song. 😕

@@TheStockwell Wow! I never knew that. Yeah seems like there's way too much meddling with original movies, shows or materials. Most of the time it was best to leave well enough alone.

@@outsider238 I agree. If you have to fix something that's already finished, it's like admitting you did a sloppy job the first time - and know it. Kubrick sometimes found fault with his films after they'd been released, but - other than a few tweaks - he was never tempted to go back and fix them. Have a great week! ☺

“The recent 4K Blu ray DVD version made the piano wires powering and gliding the warships less obvious”.

Supposedly the original Technicolor prints hid most of the wires, but later cheaper non-Tech color prints revealed them. The 4G process put em back into the closet. Wish it was in 3D for the LA attack sequence as originally planned. Folks forget while WOW won a special visual effects Oscar, it was also nominated for sound editing, as well it should have. In some scenes the flash precedes the explosion by fractions of a second. That is high art.

“ The good thing about this is that it was all man-made and not digitech trickery… warts and all adds to the appeal because as a young kid I could relate to building scale models and marionette puppetry. It is all the more compelling to know all the blood sweat & tears went into building these sets and miniatures, unlike today.”

7:24 I find it interesting how the war machines create three spots of flame underneath themselves, as if they were hovering by three beams of energy. Apparently the movie was originally going to have the war machines as actual tripods just like the book, but filmmakers decided against it because it was difficult to film their leg movements without it looking silly. So they decided to have them hover instead. The three energy beams must have been added as a compromise to make up for them not being tripods.

Adam Ohm it’s later mentioned mentioned that they may have legs but are camouflaged and unseeable to the human eye.

Yes, and in so doing only made the machines seem more uncanny and alien. Sometimes the easier thing is the better thing.
@jmcsquared18

Imo the 1953 "tripods" are the most terrifying. The sounds it made when it first stuck its cobra head out of the meteorite was bone chilling. Not to mention how they are real, i.e. not cgi. That just tripled the creep factor.

The designer who designed these alien machines also designed the alien crafts in the Japanese movie THE MYSTERIANS and there is a similarity.

That effects starting around 7:30 are perfect until the artillery effects come in. The setting is so bleak and menacing, and then someone throws a friggin firework into the mix.

Yeah, not all of the effects have stood the test of time. Effects can still be messed up now though. It takes a real artist's eye to get these things right.

The reason the wires were visible is because they had to be quite thick. The machine models were made of copper plate, and were 42" across, and thus weighed a LOT. BTW: originally, they planned on creating the three plasma like legs below the machines by using a million volt (!) electrical discharge. It's said that the initial tests (yes, they actually did it!) were incredible. But safety wise, it was a nightmare, and made filming almost impossible, due to the contrast between the intensely bright electrical arcs and the machines and scenery. So the idea was shelved.

thank you so much that was truly truly outstanding footage of War of the Worlds I'm just curious as to how they made those ships stay so still while moving I don't know if it will be the second movie or if they were moving themselves I know they were horn wires I just wonder how they manage to keep them so still without while bleeding a little bit.. that's something I've always wanted to know but that is great footage I love it

EMMETT ROWE Sorry for the 2 year late reply. I think the reason they could keep the war machines looking so still and smooth was because they were actually very heavy. They were 4ft wide and made from beaten copper and filled with wires and motors ect so you dont get the bobbing or sudden movements that you might get with a lighter model.

@officialpennsyjoe
@officialpennsyjoe 4 года назад
@@YDDES It may be the best theory, but still not set in stone to the law. We have been wrong many times throughout history. Life will still have mysteries, and we are no where near advanced as we think we are at. We still have an incredible way to go before we find out most of the laws of the universe. We do not even fully understand how wringing two flat surfaces together even works. Same to be said with gravity, we do not even understand how gravity really works. Though, the law of gravity never changes over time, (hence why it is a law). Origin stories of how something started is like trying to figure out how humans started. It may seem simple to answer, but we have only theories. History keeps changing when we find new things. Laws never change. The point is to free the mind up for new possibilities instead of "tunnel visioning" on one theory. Doing that would limit new possibilities of research, and findings.
@YDDES
@YDDES 4 года назад
Joseph Szachor You clearly have to learn the difference between theory and theory. There are theories about What things are and There are theories about how Observed facts actually work. There are No facts describing a scientific happening. There are just theories, which can change with new findings. But, untill something better surfaces, the old theories are used. Since English is not my first, or even second, language, it’s not so easy to describe What I mean.
