Let's take a road trip to Tybee Island, Georgia! This beach town is only a few from downtown Savannah. We'll start in the city and take a POV drive Road trip on Islands Expressway (US Route 80) past the Fort Pulaski National Monument all the way to downtown Tybee Island.
This Georgia barrier island, which faces directly east, has been a well-liked holiday destination since the late 1800s. Tybee Island is the ideal getaway for anyone in need of a good dose of sand and sun because it is home to large, pristine beaches with warm and gentle waves.
The Island is a city and barrier island in Chatham County, Georgia, 18 miles east of Savannah. Despite the fact that both the island and the city share the name "Tybee Island," just a portion of the island's overall area is contained inside the city.
Soon after the Civil War, steamships started transporting visitors to Tybee Island. The Central of Georgia Railway finished building a line to Tybee Island in 1887, which allowed the island to receive a large influx of vacationers. In 1891, the railroad constructed the Tybrisa Pavilion, and by the end of the decade, the island was covered in several hundred summer homes.
U.S. Route 80, which connects Tybee Island to the mainland by road, was finished in the 1920s. Development accelerated at the island's southern point, where the Tybrisa Pavilion became a well-liked stop for big band tours. Four hotels, including the Desoto Hotel and Hotel Tybee, as well as a number of smaller cabins, were present on the island by 1940. The Tybee Pier and Pavilion was built in 1996 to take the site of the Tybrisa Pavilion, which burned down in 1967.
Georgia's easternmost point is the island. Georgia's famous phrase "From Rabun Gap to Tybee Light" contrasts a mountain pass close to the state's northernmost point with the well-known lighthouse on the coastal island to show the state's geographic diversity.
The city of Tybee Island was officially renamed "Savannah Beach" as a PR stunt at the end of the 1950s, but it has since returned to its former name. The tiny island, which has long served as a peaceful retreat for Savannah locals, is now a well-liked destination for vacationers from outside the Savannah metropolitan region.
The Fort Screven Historic District and the frequently photographed Tybee Island Light Station were all located on Tybee Island. Cecil Day, the founder of the Days Inn Motels, opened his first location on Tybee Island in 1970.
There are a few specific goals of Travel Towner:
1. To take fun POV (“Point-of-View”) videos of scenic drives, highways, and roadways so you can virtually travel anywhere you like; or look back at a time when you were younger.
2. Document a fun walking tour of a specific park, attraction, or point of interest so you can see what's it's like to really be there.
3. Showcase vintage footage from yesteryear to show what it was like back in 19- something something! If you have any vintage footage of past attractions, parks, road trips or anything interesting from the USA? Contact me and let’s feature it here!
4. Just for Fun. These are videos that are funny or interesting in some way that I think everyone will enjoy!
Please give a "thumbs up" if you like taking a POV Road Trip or love POV driving.
Want to get in on the fun and make cool videos too? Here is everything I use to make it happen:
The iMac to edit: amzn.to/3AMBhWv
Video Camera: amzn.to/3xwP29F
Steadycam: amzn.to/3wvdaIv
Media: amzn.to/3hS4Ihp
Another big part of the channel is to document a piece of Americana… at a certain point in time. Wouldn’t it be cool to go back to where you lived, 20 or 30 years ago, and take a ride through your hometown? As more roadway drives, walking tours, and vintage trips are added, it builds history so future viewers can go “back in time” and see what it was like, back then.
Roadtripping and traveling are uniquely American pastimes- and we should preserve it’s history- so future generations can appreciate the Freedom of the Road.
Please like the videos and subscribe to the channel. Leaving comments is a great way to tell ME what you’d like to see next.

This video brings tears to my eyes, thank you for posting. We grew up always going to Tybee and when I had a family of my own I continued that tradition and took my boys who are now almost grown but we havent been in years. Seeing this reminded me of all the memories of when they were little and the excitement we had of getting to the beach. We would roll the windows down and wait for that ocean air to hit us (after the water plant of course) and my favorite right turn into Tybee island I always felt like I was home. This video is great, thank you so much for posting and I am now going to plan a trip for my boys before they are all grown up and out of the house! Thank you again!
