Tybee Island surf instructor bitten by shark revisits beach, recalls attack

On Tuesday, a shark bit a Tybee Island surf instructor in the leg, landing him in the hospital. Two days after the attack, he returned to the beach where it happened.

I had a close call with what I'm pretty sure is a bull shark near the sandbars out there. I was coming back in as the tide was, and I got next to the wall, and had to cross a pretty deep trench near a sandbar, and I felt like something was ..."sharky" in the area, so, I scrambled out onto the rocks, and watched a very large shadow swim right past where I had been.

I USED TO SWIM IN THAT EXACT SPOT BACK IN THE 1980S. WE WOULD WAIT TILL THE TIDE WENT OUT ALL THE WAY AND SWIM TO THAT ISLAND ACROSS THE RIVER WHICH WAS DRIED UP IN MANY SPOTS AND SWIM FROM ONE SANDBAR TO THE OTHER WHICH MEANT DEEPER WATER HERE AND THERE. AND ONCE ON THAT OTHER ISLAND WHICH IS CALLED LITTLE TYBEE. EE WOULD HANG OUT THERE TILL THE NEXT LOW TIDE WHICH GAVE US ABOUT 8 OR 9 HOURS TO EXPLORE AROUND AND MAKE A WHOLE DAY OF IT. AS AN OLDER GUY I FOUND OUT LATER ON THAT SHARKS LOVE TO FREQUENT THE MOUTHS OF RIVERS FLOWING INTO THE OCEAN. BULL SHARKS ARE VERY COMMON IN THESE WATERS AND KNOWING THAT. I WOULD NEVER GO INTO THAT SPOT WHERE THIS GUY IS AT ANY FURTHER THAN KNEE DEEP WATER. I AM SO LUCKY I NEVER EXPERIENCED ANYTHING WORSE THAN STING FROM THE JELLYFISH THAT LOVE THE WARM WATERS OFF THIS COASTLINE

I got tagged by a sea nettle out there, and that thing hurt so bad, that I was seeing in black and white for all of about 5 seconds. I also almost had an unfortunate accident with a bull shark, so I'm definitely not getting back in the water out there unless I can see what is occupying it with me.

@@DarthTwilight we would swim out there with a water tight backpack with alcohol and weed and considered it quite safe as far as cops or ppl. That could bust us. The whole island is scrub brush ,sand and that of the sort. About 3 miles down the beach was the other end where a bunch of boaters would hang, that area was called beach hammock which always had boaters in and out of that area, which was also at the mouth of a river and the ocean. so if for some reason we had an emergency ( which none never arose) we could run down the beach and maybe beg a boater to take us to the mainland going up lazaretto creek. Yes we had so much fun in those days and never considered the consequences, sharks or nothing else.
