After a public hanging the rope was often sold in sections to the people watching, this is where the phrase “money for old rope” comes from.

@daveericson8447

That's incorrect the saying comes from To make money from old rope comes from the practice of picking apart old ropes to create oakum (a fibrous material used with hot pitch for caulking seams in old-time sailing vessels). It was a chore performed by women and children in Victorian workhouses or by sailors when their ships were docked.

It is said that the head of Cromwell was retrieved by his daughters, the body was left in a ditch. Both daughters are buried, below ground level in a crypt in St Nicolas Church Chiswick, close to the River Thames. In the late 1880`s the Church was being renovated and an additional coffin was found with no name. The vicar fearing that it held the head of Cromwell, bricked up the entry point and further sealed it, not wanting it to become a visit for tourist or attended by anti Cromwell factions . Its still sealed to this day . This Church is where I was christened, and grew up with this information.

One of my favourite parts of London - it was the driver of the wagon who didn't drink - he was on the wagon. The wagon had an official name, the Lurch - left in the lurch. Tyburn Road connected Tyburn Execution Ground to Newgate Prison, now Oxford Street, New Oxford Street etc all the way to what is now the Old Bailey. Love London history, great video as always x

Hi Sinead, the term Hungover was also taken from when the lowest form of accommodation in Victorian England was access to bend over a rope for the night at the price of a penny. Usually used by drunken sailors who had spent all their money drinking, It's said to be the origin of the term 'hungover. '"

Very informative video, thank you. You would like to think that the religious prejudice and hatred that led to some of the hangings you describe was history, but it still continues to this day. I was raised into the C of E but now have no faith, I have never been able to understand why two people who worship the same God wish to kill each other because they worship that same God in two different ways. Human nature I suppose, maybe one day eh?

I absolutely love your walks. I do a lot of walking with my daughter and my sister around London. So now I sound like a history guide after watching your videos. Don't worry they know it's all from your videos as I share them. The marble arch mound, yes I've been up it. They scrapped the fee and you were allowed up, up until September, now you have to pay again, so I've heard. I hate heights. The mound doesn't look so high, well I didn't think so. And whatever people think, it's a part of history, so up I went. It's high. It's really high. I came down in the lift. It's like walking on basic scaffolding. That's what you're doing. You may like the views. I took a couple of photos. When I was brave enough. I didn't like it. It felt too fragile and its those stairs where you can see the ground between the steps. So being so high up and seeing that, turned my stomach.. But do I think you should go up, yes. It's nice to read about history but if you get the chance, take part in that history too.

Another brilliant & fascinating Tour by Sinead, well done you! I love the macabre & my new found knowledge with each of your Tours. It's also eye opening to hear where the sayings originated from. Thank you & Cheers to you Bonnie Lass, stay well! Much love from across the Pond in 🇨🇦 💚😊

Sinead - Don't film a trek up Marble Arch Mound. Waste of time, and a workout for you. How about the village of Eton and some history of the school, who went there, etc. Maybe you've done that already; I don't know. But I think that would be interesting.

Cromwell was not as extreme as the Puritans who eventually came to prominence under the rule of the |Major-Generals. He allowed Charles I's head to be sewn back on and decently buried. It was not uncommon at the time to 'hang' a corpse in pseudo religious spite and Cromwell's head was put on a spike , after some time exhibited in a booth at a fair, his daughter rescued it and it is now buried in a secret location.

Your tours are great very informative and interesting but the bobbing up and down while you’re walking with the camera is awful… so I only listen and don’t get to watch.

Wasn't the point of Tyburn being the place if execution, that it was actually outside of the confines of the city of London as it was then? Criminals were removed from society, and 'disposed of' . It's just something I find curious as the sight is almost central to modern London now 🙂
