This was the train set I had as a kid in the early 80s. I remember it being a lot of fun at first but keeping up with cleaning the track was frustrating with the old eraser. had fun with it for a couple years, never did any terrain modeling or expand the track, but we had a major move several states away back then and the train didn't make the cut. I still enjoy watching model trains at museums and on youtube, but I haven't the time or space to do model train set properly these days.
Congratulations, I had the set on Christmas of 79. I lost my set back in the 80s but 2 yrs ago I was on ebay and had a field day finding that set and of course mine the box was rough and set was used but it pulled the complete set on the track once it warmed up. So then I decided I wanted as many accessories as I could togo with it. I ended up buying over 1500.00 worth of buildings and features along with 2 expander sets to make cities from. About the only building I didn't get was the post office set. Very hard to get a working one. Anyway I have pipe unloaded the forklift unloaded the log dump the crane pipe loader and just about every building made by Tyco or pooala. Great video and I forever love the tyco train sets!
Nice that you were able to pic up another set and a bunch of accessories. I bought the set in this video near 20 years ago and it's stayed in the box every since. I do however still have my set from 1979. Unfortunately it doesn't run, but it can be serviced. I have thought of repairing everything, bit a bit nervous to do so as I don't want to goof it up. Thanks for watching. :)
@@VintageRoadRail , I personally think the Silver Streak was the highlight of the Era! I believe the set came out in 1978 when the movie came out. The red painted tops on certain ones were meant for Canada I believe I read somewhere and silver tops were American. The power torque engine and the change to Tru steel track were the changes of the time. I'm looking for ideas on how to combine two expander sets into one on a 5x8 layout?
@@richwestlake2477 Actually, the silver-roofed ones were made in 1978 and early 1979, and the red-roofed ones were made in late 1979 to 1980. Same in all regions.
Add some Labelle 107 oil or another form of lubricant to the bearings of the motor.(The shaft which the pinion gear is on….lubricate both sides of the shaft. You can see it between the two brushes on the opposite side of the motor.) Put a dab of glue inside the pinion gear and push into place. Also put a little oil into the axles of each wheel. That should get the motor turning again. Tyco motors “ate” a lot of lubricant, but if oiled frequently, they ran for years. Most Tycos that were tossed as dead are completely revivable. I found this same set at an estate sale that was in with a heap of other old trains. Loco and caboose in mint condition, probably only run a few times. Sitting for 40 years didn’t help, but I got it running and tuned up in minutes.
Awesome video!! One of my favorite vintage Tyco train sets!! The silver streak was always my favorite Tyco ho scale locomotive! Ya can't beat those power torque motors Tyco trains used back then they would certainly pull a long ho scale train for sure!! Great videos my friend keep em coming there awesome!!
I have the same Tyco 'Silver Streak' loco and Ralston Purina Co. box car which I found at a flea market last year. Unfortunately the loco turned out to be a non-repairable non-runner so I turned it into nonpowered dummy loco rolling stock it looks cool in my train set so I just hook it up and pull it along with one of my other HO locos.
Tyco had the 3 truck tractors on a green flatcar. The same flatcar the Trailers came on. The flatcar with the truck tractors was lettered for Great Northern,
I had the same set as a child and still have part of it. I wasn't happy with it though as I was a huge fan of the movie "Silver Streak" and the locomotive was not what was used in the movie.
@@VintageRoadRailthe movie train is fictional of course, just about any train movie that has a crash isn't going to be done with a real RR's logo with permission, so they dressed up a CP trainset.
I think the reason it stopped running is because you pushed the pinion gear on a little too far - to the point where it is jammed against the bearing and won't turn - I've made that mistake before!
I have pretty much the entire silver Streak train set the only thing I'm missing is the caboose and the box. It runs really well Mine can do a crazy slow crawl even better than some newer locomotives I have Which for power torque its Incredible
I have the Silver Streak set. Unfortunately, the locomotive died over a year ago! I used the wrong lubricant! 😞The rest of the set is still getting used - in fact, I am literally running it with a different loco as I type this comment!
oh I'd like a copy of the building! there 3-4 variations on the Purina car including a Chugg-Chugg Boxcar! maybe it was the later or early version but the SS loco had 4301 on the cab!
Great video.if you haven't seen him check out smt mainline his videos show all kinds of repairs on older none Dec trains. Helped me out a lot seeing how to take apart all kinds of engines.
