Nice, very nice Davie! The fish around here seem to prefer simple patterns. Spiders and soft hackles are particularly deadly but have often thought a tiny bit of flash would be beneficial... will tie up a bunch tonight. Thank you and ATB! Hank

Hi Davie, starting to get the spring fever now and just lookin at my fly tying kit to see what I need for this up and coming season if the snow ever starts to disappear...very long winter here. Do you use much moose hair? Beautiful simple flies those are and believe it or not I made similar with much smaller hooks that float on the water for trout in the late summer when they won't take anything else. I douse them in dry fly dressing. Great vids.

Hi hunt4fish, I have used moose hair but mostly from the mane I do like it in the flies I tye and it works really well..Summer is on it's way here so hopefully I'll be out a few times very soon and I hope your season starts sooner than later..I'm glad you like the videos... All the very best Davie...

Davie, two super looking soft hackles you tied there. Is the glint thread the same as veevus iridescent thread? Is the partridge a Hungarian or chukkar / french variety? That's an awesome looking feather, I wondered if you could use those coverts for cheeks or shoulders on a streamer. It has the look of the vulturine you used on that elver pattern, or it's from the super clearness of your camcorder. Yours are the only videos I can clearly see thread wraps and direction of wraps, like at the head, very important thing that you you've taught me just by watching. Thanks again! 👍☝👋

Hi Joe, It does look very much the same and would work fine..I would say that it's the same as the Hungarian and the Chukkar is very much the same as a French Partridge, if someone gave me this then that is what I would have called them..It's a great feather to use and it's also very useful dyed yellow and tyed in the same combination with a hare's ear body..Thanks again for the kind words.. All the very best Davie...

Beautifully tied, Davie. When tying with micro glint, is a metal bobbin holder sufficient or should I use ceramic?
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 4 года назад
Hi John, Give it a go and see how it works as it make be ok but if it doesn't I would look at getting a good ceramic bobbing holder, the one I like is the Tiemco Heavy Duty version but there's others as well that work well..I'm glad you liked the flies... All the very best Davie..

Hi max man, The waterhen bloa, partridge & orange and a black spider would be good at any time of the year in different sizes though I'm sure you could ask ten different anglers and you would get ten different answers...I'm glad you liked the flies and thank you for the kind comments... All the very best Davie..

I did enjoy it, Davie... Thanks. Seems like in the "old days" you almost always turned a hackle tip back after tying it in. Now it seems like you either just trim the hackle tip off, or cut it short before tying in in. My guess is the later two methods aren't quite as sound, but I don't really know that. Would you say what you see as the differences, please? Mike
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 6 лет назад
Hi Mike, I would say folding the tip back is one of the best ways to tye in a hackle, though I feel at times the hackle I'm using will lie better if tyed in with the tip cut so I'll try both ways just to see what's best... All the very best Davie..
@krallmi48
@krallmi48 6 лет назад
Thank you, Davie. Now I'm going to try a couple of different flies with the different ways of tying in the tip... see if I can see the difference, too (I'm not sure I've got as educated a set of eyes as you have, though). Mike

Great looking spiders there mate. How small can you go with them Davie? Best Regards, Ken
@DavieMcPhail

Hi Ken, I would be happy to tye them down to an 18 which I have done in the past and they can be very good when the water is very low...I'm glad you like them... All the very best Davie...
