thats actually a briliant idea for dry flies making just a tad bit of foam so u dont even need to use floating oils on it

Very nice as always;Here in Canada we think of "hoppers" as Grasshoppers often tied on long shank hooks and at times on size 4 or larger;this fly is designed as a midge /hopper ;what is the hopper imitating?Earl

hey davie, just wanted to know if you had any favorite midge patterns that you tie in size 20 and smaller. my personal favorite is a biat midge. here in the high pressured tailwaters of colorado, its good to stay ahead of the crowds.
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 10 лет назад
Hi Tyler, When you are tying that small there's not many materials that can be used, my favourites would be pheasant tail fibres, goose and turkey biots, stripped peacock quills and threads and fine mylar tinsels..Here in the uk and Scotland we use much bigger flies than you do as most of our midge patterns are for fishing in the lochs and not on the rivers though you can get some very small midge coming off in the early part of the season. Flies I like to use are small griffiths gnat, f-flies and a shipmans buzzer..Heres' a link to some shipmans buzzers which I have on youtube.. Tying the Shipmans Buzzers with Davie McPhail. I hope this is of some help to you.. All the very best Davie

Davie, as a fellow Ayrshire man, what dry flies and nymphs would you personally recommend for Ayrshire rivers?

Hi Raffae1900me, I have attached a video I did showing how I make the legs as well as a link to the tails already made to be used. If you search pre-knotted pheasant tail legs you should be able to find them.. Bonjour Azerty, I have attached a link to the way I knot the pheasant tail legs though I do buy them as well pre-knotted. Veniards are a wholesale company that supply many shops, they sell them in natural and dyed colours.. All the very best Davie... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LHUM8FBQPdk.html

Love the fly and have watched it several times. I want to ask a question that has nothing to do with this fly. I am trying to find an instructor to teach me the basics of tying Classic Atlantic Salmon flies. I have managed to trade flies and other materials that are hard to get for many of the feathers that are still obtainable. I have some substitutes. I have been preparing for a while. There has to be someone even if it is on the web. Thanks for your time in answering this question. I am in the U.S. as you know. Internet shouldn't matter how far away the teacher is. All the best to you and your family for Happy Christmas and Happy and healthy New year. Sean

Hi Sean, I would like to wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year when it comes as well... I rarely tye classic style flies now as you do need a lot of time on your hands. It is a labour of love rather than a way of earning a part of a living as I do with tying other flies, but I did enjoy tying them. You never stop learning with these flies and they will test you in many ways, so have fun when you start for the more of them you tye the better you will become as this is the best way to learn in my view... All the very best Davie
