People don’t fish with these flies much anymore but it’s f they knew how well they caught fish they definitely would. I’ve always admired how well you set the wings on wet flies. That is one of my favorite river flies. Of all the flies I’ve tied wet fly wings have always been the hardest thing to do well and although I can do it now you still amaze me as to how well you do it.

One of my all time favorite flies. One of the first fly Pattern I learned to tie. I Fish it quite a bit in # 14 and 16 During the heavy caddis hatches we get around Mothers Day. Good fly to swing at near dark too. It use to bother me that I could not set the wings to text book standards, They get chewed up some, and like the no hackle fly the more they get chewed on the better they fish.

We first want to thank you for tying the leadwing coachman wet fly ty. It's always great to have a comparison to let you know you are on the right track with one's tying. Have you shown how to ty a wet winged cow dung fly, if not would you consider providing another example of a wet fly type

Perfect execution of those wings! I absolutely love watching you tie wings on everything from salmon flies, Irish and Scottish wets, and dries meant for the river or by loughs. Great pattern choice as well and also one of my go to patterns on tough days, and a must for me to throw around before heading for home on tough days

A great old pattern, just as efffective with a quick wing removal at the waterside if needed. I know people have difficulty with wings. Two things which instantly improved my winging attempts years ago, were : Practice winging on a bare hook. Without head/body material interfering, it is so much easeir to sit them neatly and pinch and loop thread turns. Don't wind up the wing once it's initially caught on and set - wind turns away from the wing, towards the eye That way you remove the risk of crushing/twisting the wing with every turn. Bare hook winging practice was a revelation, after nailing the basics, I started marrying wings easily on the bare hook as well. When I moved onto a full dressing, bulky heads & bodies held little fear, and I could even wind turns up a wing succesfully 👍

Admittedly I have a bias toward any fly with the coachman in the name, so I really like this fly. When I was first learning about fly fishing & flies, I can remember seeing the Leadwing Coachman on a color plate of classic wet flies & feel like the others were all pretty, but this is the one that looks like a real insect. I must learn to tie this!

Hi Davie, another cracking video, I'm just getting back into fly fishing after a very long break (marriage, mortgages, weans etc ! ), I got a second hand copy of Clyde style flies by John Reid the other day and was wondering if you would do a video based around Clyde styles, I'm based in Hamilton so my main rivers are upper Clyde and the Avon, most people suggest that it's lightly tied dour coloured flies for the best results ????, thanks for your time and effort !

I never understood how to keep the wing from splitting after it gets tied. When I make them they never look as good as this. Unless I spray them with a light coat of clear lacquer paint, then I think it ruins the action of the feather wing.

So Davie, just spent two seconds thinking of this name. It must be a pretty old pattern? Does this mean that there is a "Coachman," body? I hadn't thought of it before, but the "Royal," was added because of the red band? Meaning that there is a "Coachman," body as well? I always have trouble with quill wings, I think I use too much, I'll work on this for awhile, I should get it! Thanks as always!!!

Hi Davie, I often wonder what is the correct width of each wing, should they be the hook gape or do you have a better way that you would use that would help me? I'm either too wide or to thin, thanks Davie much appreciated.
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 3 месяца назад
Hi @dongil123, When I am using a fine and soft wing like starling I would normally use a little more as it does get thinner when wet though using mallard which is a thicker fibre then less works best for me and will tye in easier.. All the very best Davie

You always say varnish but what do you use super glue or nail polish or what? Love your Videos. Thanks Mark
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 2 года назад
Hi Bouhunter, Ever since I can remember here in Scotland when you finish your fly it would always be called varnish as this is what was used. Even when someone uses nail polish they would still call it varnish as this is how it is sold as well here in the uk..I also use superglue at times though I would coat it with varnish to finish it off..I'm glad you enjoy the videos.. All the very best Davie

Hi Davie - Do you have any comment about the peacock herl. I've found that after I fish the flies that I've made the herl becomes matted and ugly. I guess it's the quality or type of peacock herl that I have but honestly I don't see much difference when I look at the materials. So is there something I'm missing when buying the material, or perhaps I'm not using enough strands of herl when I wind the body?
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 2 года назад
Hi philip0148, The herl should open back out in the water so your fly will still look as good when you first tyed it..When I buy my peacock feathers I normally get a bulk pack of 100 large ones so that I can select the best feathers for quills and then herl looking for the bronze coloured ones for certain flies as well as the fine and short fibre length for diawl-bachs.. All the very best Davie

Mr. McPhail, how do you keep the wing on the far side from folding over? I have a problem where the wing on my side is fine, but the wing on the far side folds or crimps up. What's the secret?

@@DavieMcPhail thanks! I use hairline dubbing wax and mine seems a little more tacky than yours. Yours seems much harder. The one I use is the consistency of like peanut butter.
