Tight lines and happy fishing!
Tying an orange tag to the tail of a pheasant nymph is a popular fly for trout. This is a striking pattern as it imitates various aquatic insects and the orange tag adds an extra element of cuteness. Here are the steps to link it:
Necessary materials:
Hook: Nymph hook, size 12-20.
Thread: orange (for tag) and brown or black.
Tail: Pheasant tail.
Fin: thin copper or gold wire.
Body: Pheasant tail fibers.
Chest: dabbing peacock
Head: Thread (brown or black)
Steps for tying:
Attach the hook to the vice:
secure the hook in the vise using a shank level.
Forming the tail:
take some pheasant tail fibers and tie them on the bend of the hook. The tail should be approximately the length of the hook shank.
Starting a thread:
attach the orange thread near the bend of the hook and wrap around a small area to form a tag. Then switch to brown or black thread for the rest of the fly.
Tie the wire:
attach a thin copper or gold wire at the same point as the tail.
Create the body:
tie several pheasant tail fibers at the ends and roll them forward to form a thin, pointed body. Fasten and trim off excess.
Wrap the ribs:
Wrap copper or gold wire around the body of the pheasant tail to ensure segmentation and durability. Tie it and trim off the excess.
Prepare the chest:
wrap around dabbing thread
Complete the chest:
wrap the peacock tail around the shank of the hook to form the ribcage, making it slightly thicker than the body. Tie and trim off excess.
Forming the head:
Create a small neat head from threads.
Complete the fly:
finish the carving and apply a small drop of cement to the head for durability.
Your Orange Pheasant Nymph Tail Tag is now ready to fish! This pattern can be varied by adjusting the size and color to suit local shading and conditions.
