Done with the beginner in mind and using handspun yarn, I show how I tie off a skein of yarn, accurately measure yardage and determine wraps per inch.

In order to keep any sticky residue from the scotch tape getting onto my WPI (wraps per inch) stick, or onto any portion of my yarn I simply cut a small notch or groove into the end of the WPI stick and slip one end of my yarn into the notched anchor point. Then I carry the yarn down the length of the WPI stick until I get to the beginning of the measurement line, and continue to roll the WPI stick to load the yarn evenly as you show. This technique creates a nice starting point without having to fiddle with tape. =^D I enjoyed watching your video and subscribed right away. I'm looking forward to getting back into spinning and knitting after having to pack up my yarn and needles for months in preparation for an overseas move. Thanks for sharing your skills with the rest of us!

Hey, thanks for the comment! I have a friend who does wood turning and makes spindles, wpi tools, etc...and she made me a prototype wpi tool. I did mention to her to put a notch in the end so the yarn would be secured. In a pinch though, a pencil and some tape will do. You make a good point :)

Thanks for this. It was so clear and I have been spinning for two years but learnt so much. I will definitely use your method in the future.

Thank you for posting. For me it was very timely. I am not a spinner but I just frogged a project and wound it on my new swift and I had no idea how to tie it. This video was very helpful.

I really like your videos. I'm just starting to get into processing raw fiber and your videos are really informative. Do you ever dye your yarns or raw fiber or roving? I'd like to get into natural dyes (Osage, Walnut, Turmeric, etc.). Would you ever do a video on this? Okay if not, just thought I'd ask. :) Thanks for taking the time to post your videos.

Steven Scott Hi! Yes, I have done some natural dyeing, but not that much. I personally prefer natural colors. The local spinning guild will be having a natural dye day in August and I am planning on making a video about the dyeing we do that day. Thank you so much for asking ! I welcome suggestions! Thanks, -Kim :)

Have you heard of long tail ties? Then you don't cut pieces. Makes a beautiful skein.

I could, but they are no longer in business. I'm sure a search will yield you several other good fiber tool makers. Good luck!

It was bought from an Etsy seller. Unfortunately he no longer makes them. A search around may find you another like it, or you could have a handy woodworker friend or family member make you one. They don't seem too complicated really. Thanks for posting. -Kimberly : )

Doesn't it make a difference what the diameter of the down rod is to calculate the wpi?
@thenaturalspinner
@thenaturalspinner 5 лет назад
It makes no difference what size dowel rod is used. You could easily use a pencil if you had one handy. It could also be square, triangular, or flat. WPI gauges come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. You are simply using it to hold the yarn so that you can see how many strands of yarn, lying next to each other, there are in an inch. The tricky part of determining wraps per inch, is keeping the tension consistent (not stretching the yarn) and not pushing the yarn too close together as you wrap. This would give you an innacurate result. Hope this helps. Thanks for posting! -Kimberly
